Chinese romantic hit Love’s Ambition (许我耀眼) has been setting social media on fire, and lead actor William Chan is at the centre of the buzz — not just for his acting, but for a funny little misunderstanding with his fans.
Ever since the series premiered, mainland fans have been affectionately calling William’s character “Haoming Ge” (皓明哥), or “Brother Haoming”.
The catch? The name sounds exactly like “好命哥” (hǎo mìng gē), which literally means “the lucky guy”.
The phrase took off online, but the Hong Kong-born star admitted he first thought it was sarcasm.
In a recent interview, William Chan laughed as he recalled:
“In Cantonese, ‘好命’ sometimes has a teasing tone — like saying someone’s had it too easy. I thought maybe they were joking because I got to act with Zhao Lusi!”

Once he realised it was a genuine term of affection, he said he was touched:
“Next time, please tell me first so I don’t panic!”
William also shared that he nearly passed on the role of Shen Haoming, a wealthy businessman who oozes confidence and quiet power.

“I didn’t want him to feel fake or over-polished. Many CEO roles end up looking forced — slick hair, exaggerated coolness. I wanted Haoming to be elegant but grounded,” he told World Journal.
The drama follows Shen Haoming and Xu Yan (played by Zhao Lusi 赵露思) in a tense, emotional marriage built on deception.
Xu Yan is an ordinary woman posing as a high-society socialite to infiltrate the upper class — and instead of exposing her, Haoming decides to play along.
