A Love Other Than Yours Episode 5 turns Mi-do and Nam-gung’s relationship into an increasingly complicated mix of marriage plans, family secrets and very inconvenient interruptions. What begins with a surprise proposal quickly spirals into questions about whether their relationship still has the same spark, while Tae-seung and Park Su-a continue digging into separate mysteries that are starting to overlap with Mi-do’s life.
Nam-gung asks Mi-do to marry him, and her immediate response is a bout of hiccups rather than the romantic reaction he probably imagined. It is an oddly fitting start to an episode that keeps putting emotional moments next to completely unexpected ones. Mi-do later stares at the missing space in her comic-book collection and wonders whether she can really move forward without Nam-gung, or without all the chapters they have built together.
The ring Nam-gung plans to use for the proposal also has a rather unromantic history: he retrieved it from the rubbish. Still, the intention behind it is sincere. Later, he prepares cornstalks for Mi-do’s father’s death anniversary memorial, and Mi-do unexpectedly attends the ceremony with books her father once read.
Her appearance surprises the family because she normally stays away from the memorial. Over dinner, Mi-do and Nam-gung announce that they are getting married, giving the family another reason to stare at them while presumably trying to process everything at once.
The episode then fills in why Nam-gung’s feelings for Mi-do run so deep. While fishing with Wan-do and Young-do, he remembers being a child when a dog chased him and Mi-do. Nam-gung, only 10 at the time, left Wan-do behind and ran towards Mi-do. When Wan-do asks whether that was when he first fell in love with her, Nam-gung admits he does not really know what love meant to him then. What he does know is that he always wanted to protect Mi-do.
Mi-do, meanwhile, is thinking about a future that may not include her. She quietly tells her mother, Sook-hee, that if she dies before Nam-gung, she wants her building to go to him. Sook-hee raises concerns about Nam-gung’s family, but Mi-do tells her not to mention them to him.
That conversation gives the episode a darker emotional edge, particularly because Mi-do is also trying to repair the relationship rather than simply prepare for its possible ending. She tells Nam-gung she wants to spend the memorial with the family and says she wants to bring their old spark back. She starts kissing him, only for his phone to ring with a work call. Naturally, romance has to compete with employment yet again.
At work, Nam-gung gets another complication when Park Su-a is transferred to his team. Her reason for joining becomes obvious during lunch. She is still investigating the suspicious sweet-potato switch and wants access to the sample-processing schedule so she can determine when the substitution takes place.
Nam-gung refuses to let his team get dragged into the investigation, but Su-a is clearly not planning to abandon it. Her determination becomes even more interesting later when Nam-gung secretly works on the same problem himself.
Mi-do’s problems are becoming more tangled too. A flashback shows Tae-seung watching her meet an old assistant director who treats her dismissively. Tae-seung follows her, pretending that he only wants the photograph she has of Hae-na and Ju-hyeok. Mi-do drops the photograph over a staircase railing, forcing him to chase after it.
In the present, Tae-seung contacts Sim Hae-ju and asks whether he has managed to hack Mi-do’s cloud account. He wants to know whether she has taken a digital photograph of the image, making it clear that the photograph is still part of a much larger issue.
Mi-do also realises something uncomfortable while trying to write at a café. Her relationship is not the only part of her life that feels flat. She cannot remember the last time anything genuinely made her heart race. Instead of forcing herself to write, she closes the laptop and plays a video game.
Her date with Nam-gung initially seems to help. They enjoy dinner at an expensive restaurant before heading to a hotel, hoping to reconnect properly. But their romantic evening ends with Mi-do throwing up again. At the hospital, the doctor attributes it to indigestion caused by stress.
Outside, the couple argue about her health while holding hands and repeatedly adding “sweetie” to their sentences in an attempt to make the argument sound less like an argument. It is one of the episode’s funnier details because calling each other “sweetie” does not magically make a disagreement about health concerns less serious.
Later, Mi-do visits the rooftop studio while Sook-hee clears it out. The space brings back memories of the happier periods she shared with Nam-gung, and the flashbacks give the episode a chance to show the relationship before it became weighed down by everything happening around them.
Meanwhile, Nam-gung sends Su-a to the potato factory in the countryside and gives her plenty of tedious work, apparently hoping that exhausting her will stop the investigation. It does not work. Su-a eventually realises that the transport driver's GPS data could reveal where the potato switch happens.
When she sneaks into the truck to inspect the routes, she finds Nam-gung already there doing exactly the same thing. His attempt to keep her away from the investigation has therefore worked about as well as one might expect.
Mi-do's afternoon is considerably worse. A huge shelf collapses inside the studio, trapping her underneath it. Tae-seung happens to call at the exact moment, and Mi-do is forced to ask him for help.
Tae-seung initially refuses to move the shelf unless Mi-do agrees to his settlement and gives him access to her cloud account. She would rather wait for someone else, even though an overhead lamp is threatening to fall on her. It is an impressively stubborn choice given the circumstances.
Tae-seung eventually returns after seeing how distressed she is. He lifts the shelf, and when the lamp comes down, he shields Mi-do and cuts his hand. The rescue finally reveals a more complicated side to their relationship, even if neither of them is remotely ready to admit it.
Elsewhere, Nam-gung removes a spider from Su-a’s hair and jokes with her. Later, over dinner, Su-a questions him about secretly investigating the potato incident. He calls her Deok-sun rather than Su-a, suggesting that they may have known each other long before their current jobs brought them together.
That mystery gets another layer at the hospital. Tae-seung refuses stitches because he is afraid of needles. He claims children at the orphanage where he grew up were subjected to painful needle punishment under their fingernails, although he quickly tries to dismiss the revelation as a joke.
Nam-gung later returns to the studio and sees the destruction left behind. He calls Mi-do, but she quickly ends the call and goes back to Tae-seung, offering to pay his hospital bill.
Tae-seung instead brings up the settlement again and even offers to help restore Mi-do’s director position. She refuses. Their argument becomes sharper when Mi-do reveals that she has investigated him too and knows about the work he does for Ju-hyeok. She essentially calls him Ju-hyeok’s lapdog, and Tae-seung laughs rather than taking offence.
Mi-do remains emotionally charged when she gets home and ends up sleeping with Nam-gung. Afterwards, he notices that her hiccups have finally disappeared. It is a small but telling detail after the episode began with those same hiccups following his marriage proposal.
Then comes the final complication. Nam-gung receives a message from Su-a while Mi-do receives one from Tae-seung, leaving the episode poised to push both relationships into another round of uncertainty.
Episode 5 works best when it lets the characters be messy rather than forcing every relationship into a neat romantic shape. Mi-do and Nam-gung clearly care about each other, but their attempts to recover their old chemistry feel increasingly complicated by everything neither of them is saying. The proposal is sweet in theory, although the hiccups are hardly the response Nam-gung ordered. Tae-seung is also becoming more interesting because his constant arguments with Mi-do are mixed with moments where he genuinely protects her.
Su-a, meanwhile, refuses to be pushed aside, which gives the potato mystery some much-needed momentum. The episode occasionally piles on one crisis after another, but that is also part of its charm. Nobody can apparently have a normal conversation without a secret investigation, a collapsing shelf or a badly timed phone call getting involved.
Episode 5 leaves plenty of questions hanging, particularly about Su-a and Nam-gung’s past, Tae-seung’s connection to Ju-hyeok and what those final messages might mean. What did you make of the episode’s biggest reveal, and whose storyline are you most curious to see next?
