The 31st Magnolia Awards 2026, held during the Shanghai TV Festival on 26 June, delivered another memorable night for Chinese television. But while veterans celebrated major wins and prestige dramas dominated the ceremony, much of the online conversation quickly shifted to one award that left part of the internet shaking its head. Xiao Zhan's supporters were left deeply disappointed after the actor missed out on the coveted Best Actor trophy, with some fans openly questioning the final result almost as soon as the winner's name was announced.

The night's biggest acting honour went to veteran performer Yu Hewei, recognised for his performance as Wu Shi in Silent Honor. The victory marked his second Magnolia Best Actor title after previously winning in 2021, further cementing his reputation as one of China's most respected television actors.

During his acceptance speech, Yu Hewei said he felt honoured and fortunate to receive the award once again, adding that every nominee had delivered outstanding performances this year, making the recognition especially meaningful.

He also thanked the production team and director for trusting him with the role, describing the opportunity to portray an unsung hero as both an honour and a life-changing experience.

Elsewhere, Swords Into Plowshares enjoyed an impressive evening after being named Best Chinese Drama. The series also collected Best Supporting Actor for Dong Yong, while Dong Zhe received Best Original Screenwriter. It was one of those award nights where one drama practically needed an extra suitcase for the trophies.

However, the Best Actor category quickly became the centre of attention online because Xiao Zhan, who had earned a Magnolia nomination, ultimately left empty-handed. Many of his supporters argued that his performance deserved greater recognition, with some believing his acting and overall impact during the eligibility period had surpassed that of several competitors.

Others also pointed to the wider popularity of Xiao Zhan's drama compared with Silent Honor, insisting audience reception should not be ignored, even if awards panels often judge performances by different criteria.

The frustration soon spread across Weibo, where discussion surrounding the result climbed rapidly. One widely shared post read, "This is absolutely rigged. Xiao Zhan delivered one of the strongest performances of the year, but somehow that still wasn't enough.

Another fan commented that simply being nominated was already an achievement, but admitted the final outcome still felt difficult to accept. These posts reflect the opinions of individual users rather than any verified evidence about the judging process.

Some disappointed viewers also questioned this year's shortlist itself. Several netizens argued they had been surprised by a number of nominations from the outset, claiming that certain performances lacked the strength usually associated with one of China's most prestigious television honours.

Bai Yu, in particular, became part of online debate after some viewers criticised what they described as a stiff performance, although plenty of others defended his work and reminded critics that acting remains highly subjective.

Among neutral viewers, the debate also took a sharper turn, with some expressing disappointment over the credibility of the result rather than supporting any particular actor. One widely shared comment read, "This is why nobody takes this award seriously."

C-netz went on to compare the ceremony to entertainment-focused events such as the Tencent Video All Star Night and the Weibo Night, arguing that the online backlash had blurred the distinction between a prestigious industry award and a popularity-driven spectacle. Those reactions represent opinions circulating on social media rather than established facts about the awards or their judging process.

Beyond the disappointment, another discussion emerged around the types of dramas recognised this year. A number of online users suggested that several nominated productions shared similar themes and wondered whether that influenced the awards.

Those opinions have circulated widely across social media, although there is no publicly available evidence supporting claims that the judging process was influenced by anything other than the official selection criteria.

Not everyone agreed with the criticism. Many viewers congratulated Yu Hewei, arguing that his decades of consistent work and nuanced performance fully justified another Magnolia victory and reminded fans that popularity and awards do not always go hand in hand.

A blockbuster series may dominate streaming charts, but awards juries often focus on different qualities. Television trophies have a habit of pleasing one audience while leaving another reaching for the comment section.

Even among Xiao Zhan's own fanbase, there was also a sense of pride despite the disappointment. Supporters highlighted that receiving a Best Actor nomination at the Magnolia Awards is itself regarded as a significant milestone in the Chinese television industry.

Many noted that not every leading actor, particularly those associated with commercially successful modern dramas, reaches the final nomination list, making Xiao Zhan's inclusion a major achievement regardless of the final result.

The Best Actor decision will remain one of the most debated moments of the Magnolia Awards 2026 is yet to be seen, but it has certainly kept fans talking long after the ceremony ended.
