One drama ruled the night, one actress finally completed a decade-long dream, and one awards ceremony reminded everyone why China's television industry keeps raising the bar. The 31st Magnolia Awards, held during the Shanghai TV Festival on 26 June, celebrated the biggest achievements in Chinese television, with historical epic Swords into Plowshares emerging as the evening's biggest winner while Yang Zi delivered one of the most emotional moments of the ceremony.

The annual event, staged at Shanghai's Lingang Performing Arts Centre, wrapped up five days of screenings, industry forums and international television exchanges before revealing this year's highly anticipated winners.

The ceremony reflected another strong year for Chinese drama production, with historical stories, realistic family dramas and socially driven series all sharing the spotlight rather than relying purely on commercial popularity.

The biggest honour of the evening, Best Chinese Drama, went to Swords Into Plowshares, confirming months of industry praise surrounding the historical production.

The series also secured Best Supporting Actor for Dong Yong, whose performance as Feng Dao impressed both critics and audiences, while writer Dong Zhe collected Best Original Screenwriter, completing an impressive triple victory.

Judges praised Swords into Plowshares for bringing history back to life without making it feel like an exhausting textbook. Set during the turbulent Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period, the drama explores personal choices against sweeping political change.

Instead of glorifying emperors alone, it focuses on ordinary humanity caught inside extraordinary moments. Apparently, history becomes far more interesting when people actually feel like people.

The Grand Jury Prize was awarded to Dark Dive 1950, another critically acclaimed historical production. The series also earned Yu Hewei the Best Actor trophy thanks to his restrained yet deeply powerful performance.

The drama has drawn widespread attention for exploring covert operations around the founding of modern China through real historical figures rather than fictional stand-ins, offering audiences a fresh narrative style rarely seen on television.

The judges described Yu Hewei's performance as one built on quiet strength rather than dramatic spectacle. His portrayal demonstrated that sometimes saying less carries far greater weight than shouting for attention. Television, thankfully, still remembers subtle acting exists.

One of the loudest rounds of applause arrived when Yang Zi was announced as Best Actress for Born to Be Alive. The victory marked a significant milestone after nearly a decade of Magnolia Award nominations, finally turning years of recognition into a long-awaited win.

Yang Zi Emotional Speech Steals the Show at Magnolia Awards 2026

It was her fourth Magnolia nomination overall and her third consecutive nomination in the leading actress category. Unable to hide her emotions, Yang Zi became visibly tearful while accepting the award.

During her speech, she thanked the Magnolia Awards for recognising her work and expressed heartfelt gratitude to the production team, director, fellow actors and everyone who supported the series throughout its journey.

She said receiving the award felt like the fulfilment of a dream she had pursued for many years and promised to continue challenging herself with meaningful roles. Her sincere words and visible emotion quickly became one of the ceremony's defining images.

Her director, Li Xue, also enjoyed a triumphant evening after winning Best Director for Born to Be Alive. Judges praised the series for combining large-scale storytelling with intimate emotional moments, balancing epic visual direction with genuine warmth.

The drama's setting in the harsh wilderness of Kekexili during the 1980s and 1990s added another layer of realism, following environmental workers facing dangerous wildlife poachers, unforgiving landscapes and everyday bureaucratic struggles.

Veteran actress Chi Peng received Best Supporting Actress for This Thriving Land, earning widespread praise for another transformative performance.

Known for disappearing completely into every role, she joked backstage that preparing for authenticity meant avoiding modern comforts, washing her hair with soap rather than shampoo and spending time observing village life until her movements felt completely natural. Safe to say, method acting occasionally involves far less glamour than audiences imagine.

Wang He collected Best Adapted Screenwriter for This Thriving Land, successfully transforming the award-winning novel into a television drama that captured the rise and fall of several rural families across generations.

The adaptation balanced historical scale with deeply personal storytelling, something increasingly appreciated by viewers looking for emotionally grounded narratives.

Technical categories also highlighted the industry's craftsmanship. Chai Ran received Best Cinematography for The Narcotic Operation, recognised for its visually striking camera work, while Lou Pan won Best Art Direction for A Love Never Lost, creating richly detailed historical settings that immersed audiences without overwhelming the story itself.

International productions also had their moment. Task Season 1 from the United States won Best Foreign TV Series (Long Format), while Denmark's Generations claimed the Short Format category. The Special Jury Award went to The Fabulous Story of Money, recognising its distinctive storytelling approach.

Beyond drama, the Magnolia Awards celebrated achievements across television genres. Amazing Night Season 2 and Chinese Craftsmanship Chronicles shared Best Variety Programme, while Child of Dust won Best Documentary

The Waves Will Carry Us claimed Best Documentary Series, Ling Cage Season 2 secured Best Animation, and The Scarecrows' Wedding received Best Animation Screenplay.

The ceremony also recognised television's growing global reach. Bai Yu and Yang Mi were named Chinese TV Programme International Promotion Ambassadors, while Sheriff Labrador, Panda Kingdom, Swords into Plowshares, and the China Solar Terms Series received the International Communication Award, highlighting productions that have successfully introduced Chinese storytelling to audiences overseas.

This year's Shanghai TV Festival also reflected China's expanding international television influence. Organisers revealed that submissions arrived from 60 countries and regions across five continents, a notable increase from the previous year.

Overseas drama entries also continued growing, reinforcing the Magnolia Awards' reputation as one of Asia's most respected television honours.

Online, fans and netizens quickly flooded social media with congratulations, particularly for Yang Zi, whose emotional acceptance speech resonated with viewers who had followed her career for years.

Many described her victory as long overdue, while clips of her tears spread rapidly across entertainment platforms. Others celebrated Yu Hewei's commanding performance and applauded Swords into Plowshares for proving that historical dramas still have the power to dominate both awards season and audience discussion.

Of course, every awards show also comes with debates over who should have won instead. If television fans all agreed on every category, awards ceremonies would probably be over in five minutes.

With another Magnolia Awards now complete, the spotlight shifts from trophies to what comes next for Chinese television. If this year's winners are any indication, audiences can expect even more ambitious storytelling rooted in history, realism and strong writing rather than spectacle alone.

Which winner do you think deserved their moment on stage the most? Were there any surprises or omissions that caught your attention?
