| Private Eyes West Coast Episode 2 Review. |
Private Eyes West Coast Season 1 Episode 2 turns Angie Everett’s attempt at settling into life as a full-time housewife into another murder investigation. What begins with a long-overdue date night for Angie and Matt Shade ends with their old detective instincts taking over after Priya is found beside the body of her boyfriend, Ben Moore. Naturally, Angie cannot simply enjoy dinner like a normal person. A suspicious murder, a distraught friend and a conveniently available husband are apparently all it takes to bring the private investigator back out of retirement.
The episode opens with Angie at a playgroup with her half-brother Will, while Matt is busy elsewhere giving a university speech about his memoir. Their lives look rather more domestic than they used to, but that changes when Will offers to look after Declan so the couple can finally have some time together. He even manages to secure them a table at The Empress, proving once again that Will's apparently endless list of talents is useful at the most suspiciously convenient moments.
Their romantic evening takes a sharp turn when Angie spots her friend Priya at Ben's private birthday celebration. Priya later tells Angie in the restaurant bathroom that she is dating Ben, and she is clearly delighted about the relationship. She talks about their plans to visit Provence during lavender season, giving Angie no reason whatsoever to suspect that her friend could be capable of killing him.
Then comes the scream.
Angie and Matt follow the commotion and find Priya beside Ben's dead body with a knife in her hand. Detective Violet quickly treats her as the obvious suspect, and Priya is taken into custody. The evidence looks terrible, but Angie is not convinced. Her conversation with Priya only moments earlier is still fresh in her mind, and she believes Priya genuinely loved Ben.
On the journey home, Angie manages to persuade Matt that they should investigate. The pair may have been trying to leave private investigations behind, but apparently murder has terrible timing when it comes to retirement plans.
Matt spends the night going through the party guest list, which Angie has conveniently taken before leaving. Their investigation reveals that Ben had two children, Zach and Emma. Zach co-owns Orca Spirit Adventures, while Emma works as a photographer. Ben had previously been involved in real estate with Eduardo Molina, leaving that business shortly before a major luxury hotel project collapsed.
Eduardo becomes their first serious suspect. The problem is that he will not see them without an appointment, which is hardly ideal for two investigators who have never been particularly respectful of office etiquette. Angie and Matt resort to using a building maintenance unit to reach his office, sneak inside and attempt to access his computer. Eduardo returns unexpectedly, forcing Matt to knock him out before they can finish the job.
They eventually gain access through facial recognition and find messages showing that the hotel development eventually went ahead. That makes Eduardo a far less convincing suspect because the deal ultimately succeeded without Ben.
Their attention then turns to Siobhan, a former employee who had been dismissed after Ben left the real estate company. Angie tracks her down at the hotel gym and learns that Ben had abandoned his previous career partly because he wanted to help his son Zach after the death of his mother. Siobhan, however, claims Zach resented having to work and did not appreciate what his father had sacrificed for him.
That makes Zach look increasingly suspicious. He has struggled with drugs, and there is an obvious motive if he believed Ben had forced him into a life he did not want. Angie and Matt decide to follow him, although their stakeout goes spectacularly badly when they fall asleep and miss him leaving.
Fortunately, they have another option. Raine, a computer science student, helps them track Zach's boat. Will then provides another conveniently useful connection by finding them a boat of their own. Angie and Matt follow the location and stumble across a drug operation.
The discovery initially appears to connect Zach to something much bigger, but the truth is less dramatic. They eventually speak with Ben and learn that Zach actually admired his father. Ben had given up his old career to work alongside him, and Zach saw that decision as an act of love rather than abandonment. So another promising motive disappears.
The drugs point towards Amrit Basha, against whom Ben had filed a complaint with Ocean Affairs shortly before his death. Angie and Matt head in his direction, only to run into Detective Violet, who arrests them for impersonating government officials. She eventually releases them with a firm warning to stay out of her investigation.
That warning does very little to discourage Angie.
Since they cannot simply confront Amrit, they first try to establish that he attended Ben's party. Emma gives them access to the photographs she took that night, and the pictures place Amrit in the background. When Angie and Matt confront him, he runs, which looks about as innocent as it sounds.
They take him to the police station and hand over the drugs. Amrit admits to the smuggling operation and agrees to cooperate, but he has an alibi for Ben's murder. Once again, the investigation reaches a dead end.
Then Detective Violet discovers new evidence pointing towards Priya.
The evidence is particularly damaging: Ben had taken out a life insurance policy, with Priya set to receive a substantial payout following his death. For a moment, even Angie begins to question her own instincts. Matt, however, tells her to trust what she noticed rather than simply following the most convenient explanation.
That advice proves crucial.
Angie remembers the bathroom conversation and something that had seemed completely insignificant at the time. Someone else had been in the bathroom, and Angie had noticed the woman's shoes. Emma's photographs provide the missing piece. Siobhan is wearing the same distinctive heels at the beginning of the party, but later appears in flats.
Angie and Matt break into Siobhan's hotel room and find a love letter addressed to Ben. The truth finally starts to fit together. Siobhan and Ben had previously been romantically involved while she was going through a difficult divorce. She believed they might reunite once the divorce was over, but Ben had fallen in love with Priya instead.
The situation becomes especially painful when Emma's surprise party brings both women together. Siobhan overhears Priya discussing the Provence trip with Ben, unaware that Provence had once been part of Siobhan and Ben's own plans. She confronts him, and the argument ends with Siobhan killing Ben.
There is still a problem. Angie and Matt cannot initially find physical evidence proving that Siobhan changed her shoes after the murder. Their theory depends heavily on that small detail, which is not exactly the sort of evidence that makes a detective's case easy.
They manage to convince Violet to investigate anyway, and the timing pays off. Siobhan attempts to leave town, but the detectives stop her. Forensic investigators examine the heels she wore earlier that evening and find bloodstains, providing the physical evidence needed to connect her to the murder. Siobhan is arrested, while Priya is finally cleared.
The murder case gives Angie something more important than another solved mystery. It reminds her that she still wants to investigate and help people. She may have enjoyed stepping away from the business, but the work clearly has not finished with her.
Matt's answer is wonderfully simple. At the end of the episode, he surprises Angie with a business licence for their private investigation company. Rather than returning to the old arrangement, they decide to run the agency from home. That way, they can keep solving cases without missing Declan's childhood, which is probably the most sensible compromise these two have made all episode.
The episode works because its mystery keeps changing direction without becoming needlessly complicated. Priya looks guilty, then Eduardo does, then Zach, then Amrit, before the story quietly circles back to Siobhan. The strongest clue is also one of the smallest: a pair of shoes. It is a classic detective detail, but the episode makes it feel earned because Angie remembers something she genuinely noticed rather than suddenly receiving a magical revelation from the script.
There is also a nice balance between the murder investigation and Angie's personal story. She is not simply dragged back into detective work because the plot needs her. She gradually realises that she misses the job. Matt's decision to support her while keeping their family life intact gives the ending some warmth without turning it into a syrupy speech about following your dreams.
The humour helps too. Angie and Matt breaking into offices, borrowing boats and sneaking around police investigations are hardly textbook investigative methods, but that is part of the appeal. They are competent enough to solve the mystery and chaotic enough to make every step entertaining. The episode understands that a private detective story does not always need to take itself terribly seriously.
Most importantly, Private Eyes West Coast Season 1 Episode 2 gives Angie a convincing reason to return to the profession. Priya's arrest may have started the investigation, but the real resolution belongs to Angie, whose instincts ultimately expose Siobhan's secret. With the new home-based agency now officially established, the episode leaves the door wide open for more cases while keeping the Shade family at the centre of the story.
