HBO’s Lanterns has just turned Zoe Macon into one of its biggest mysteries, because apparently a quiet rural detective story was never going to stay quiet for long. Episode 4, “The Weenie”, leaves Zoe’s fate deliberately unclear after her apparent death, while the episode piles on clues suggesting that Poorna Jagannathan’s character may be far more important to the Manhunter mystery than Hal Jordan and John Stewart initially realised.
Created by Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof and Tom King, Lanterns has largely kept its cosmic mythology in the background, instead building its story around Hal and John investigating something deeply strange in a small-town setting.
That approach makes Zoe’s storyline particularly effective. She initially appears to be caught somewhere between the Macon family’s secrets and the investigation into the Manhunter, but Episode 4 suddenly pushes her directly into the centre of the puzzle.
After Hal and John decide to break into the Macons’ hidden location while searching for the Manhunter, the pair are ambushed. Zoe arrives and saves them, seemingly confirming that she knows considerably more about what is happening than she has admitted.
Then comes the rather inconvenient development of her apparent death following an extraterrestrial energy blast. Naturally, in a superhero series, this is roughly where the audience is expected to raise an eyebrow rather than start writing a farewell speech.
The biggest question now is whether Zoe Macon is actually dead. Based on what Episode 4 shows and the clues surrounding her character, the answer appears to be no. Zoe seems to have survived and escaped, although exactly how she managed it remains part of the larger mystery. Her survival also gives Hal and John another reason to investigate what she really is and how deeply she is connected to the Manhunter.
The episode goes further by strongly hinting that Zoe could be the Manhunter. John appears to work this out before Hal does, but his personal feelings towards Zoe prevent him from immediately exposing the possibility. Hal eventually begins connecting the same dots, making the situation rather awkward for everyone involved.
There have also been clues about Zoe from much earlier in the season. Her age, particularly the fact that she appears unusually young to have a grandchild, has already made her stand out. It is the sort of detail that might seem harmless at first, until a show keeps drawing attention to it and practically puts a flashing sign above the character saying, “Something is definitely going on here.”
Still, Zoe being the Manhunter may not be the final answer. Lanterns has plenty of story left to unfold, and revealing the central mystery this early would feel almost suspiciously convenient. A more likely possibility is that Zoe is connected to the Manhunter without actually being the mysterious figure herself. She clearly possesses information that could radically change Hal and John’s understanding of the world, but that does not necessarily mean she is the person they have been hunting.
There is another clue pointing in that direction. William refers to his benefactor, believed to be the Manhunter, as “he”, which does not fit neatly with Zoe being the person behind everything. That could obviously be deliberate misdirection, because this is Lanterns and nobody appears particularly interested in making life easy for the audience. But for now, it leaves the Zoe-Manhunter theory in an interesting middle ground rather than confirming it outright.
The question of whether Poorna Jagannathan is leaving Lanterns is therefore looking increasingly unlikely. Zoe's apparent death might have been designed to make viewers think Jagannathan's involvement was coming to an end, but the clues surrounding the character suggest otherwise. If Zoe is alive, there is still plenty of story for the actor to play, particularly now that Hal appears determined to find her and settle what has become an increasingly complicated confrontation.
Jagannathan has also spoken about discovering Zoe's fate while reading the script for Episode 4 rather than knowing everything from the beginning. That is significant because it suggests the production deliberately kept major pieces of Zoe's storyline away from the cast until they needed to know them. Her reaction to the script reportedly involved genuine disbelief, which makes the Episode 4 twist feel less like a routine fake-out and more like one part of a much larger plan.
That does not necessarily mean Zoe is confirmed to be the Manhunter, either. Knowing that revelation existed in the script does not tell us exactly what the revelation ultimately means. Lanterns could be setting up Zoe as the Manhunter, someone working with the Manhunter, someone who knows the Manhunter personally, or even someone being used as a convenient distraction while the real answer sits somewhere else entirely.
There is also the show's strange glimpse into the future to consider. The story has already teased Hal's eventual fate and shown the apparent aftermath of a devastating confrontation, with bodies left frozen around the town. The timeline means Zoe's ultimate fate could stretch well beyond the events currently unfolding. So even if she survives Episode 4, that does not guarantee she makes it through the entire story. Superhero television has never been particularly sentimental about giving characters a long-term employment guarantee.
Fans have understandably been split over the Zoe theory. Some viewers see her survival as practically screaming that she is the Manhunter, especially after the episode adds more evidence to the extraterrestrial side of her story.
Others think making Zoe the main mystery would be too obvious and believe the series is deliberately encouraging viewers to jump to that conclusion before pulling the rug away later. There is also plenty of debate around whether William's description of the Manhunter as a man is meaningful evidence or simply another piece of information designed to keep everyone guessing.
The reaction makes sense because Lanterns has turned Zoe from a supporting mystery into one of the show's most important question marks. Some fans are convinced the clues are finally lining up, while others are treating every apparent answer with the appropriate level of suspicion. At this point, trusting anything at face value would probably be the most reckless decision anyone could make in the entire series.
My take is that Zoe being alive is much more interesting than Zoe simply being the Manhunter. The latter would certainly be a big reveal, but the former opens up far more possibilities. If Zoe is merely the Manhunter, the mystery has a fairly straightforward destination. If she is connected to the Manhunter but isn't actually the person behind the operation, Lanterns can use her to expand the mythology while keeping the central mystery alive.
I also think the show's decision to keep Jagannathan's knowledge of the twist limited makes the whole storyline more intriguing. It suggests the writers are protecting a larger reveal rather than simply manufacturing a dramatic cliffhanger for one episode. Zoe clearly knows something, survives something that should have ended her story, and somehow remains connected to the biggest mystery surrounding Hal and John. That is far too much narrative baggage for a character who is supposedly finished.
So, is Zoe Macon dead? Almost certainly not. Is Poorna Jagannathan leaving Lanterns? The evidence points in the opposite direction. Is Zoe definitely the Manhunter? That is where things remain deliciously uncertain. The series has given viewers enough clues to build a convincing theory, but not enough to close the case.
And honestly, that is probably the fun of it. If you think Zoe is the Manhunter, you may already have the answer sitting in front of you. If you think the show is setting up a massive misdirection, you may be even closer. Either way, Lanterns has clearly decided that Episode 4 was the perfect time to make Zoe everyone’s problem.
