| Secret Lives of Mormon Wives: Why Did Layla Taylor and Mason McWhorter Break Up? |
Layla Taylor and Mason McWhorter’s relationship has officially run its course, with the couple splitting shortly after appearing to have worked through a major argument during their New York City trip on Secret Lives of Mormon Wives season 5. What initially looked like one of the steadier relationships on the show quickly unravelled once they returned home, leaving Layla to confirm that they had gone their separate ways.
Layla and Mason first began dating in July 2025, after Layla had previously been involved with Mason’s brother, Chase McWhorter. Despite the slightly awkward family history, Layla said she felt comfortable with Mason and was genuinely excited about the relationship. It was also her first serious romance following her divorce, making the relationship feel like a significant step forward rather than another casual chapter.
Their relationship had already survived a few bumps before season 5. During the previous season, Mason joined the DadTok group on their London trip and spent time around Layla’s children. His attempt to discipline the kids created some tension between the couple, but they eventually moved past it. By the start of season 5, Layla was describing the relationship as stable and said she was happy with where things were heading.
Then came New York.
The trouble began when Layla told her friends that she was considering buying herself a Breitling watch. Her friends were already worried about how much she was spending on Mason and pointed out that she had bought several costly gifts and personal items, including a Cartier ring, clothes and luggage.
Layla explained that she had a habit of giving more in relationships, almost as though spending money could make up for whatever she felt was missing emotionally. A rather expensive love language, to put it mildly.
When Layla raised the issue with Mason, however, he saw the situation differently. Mason argued that Layla sometimes pushed him away whenever she was struggling and made it difficult for him to get close to her.
Rather than simply being about presents or money, the disagreement exposed a deeper problem in how the pair handled emotional pressure. Layla later said they managed to talk things through, giving viewers the impression that the relationship had survived another difficult moment.
That turned out not to be the ending.
After they returned home from New York, Layla tearfully revealed that she and Mason had broken up. The announcement came as a surprise because, only shortly before, she had suggested that they had managed to resolve their problems. Apparently, resolving an argument and resolving a relationship are two very different things.
Layla later confirmed the split on TikTok in February 2026, describing the breakup as amicable while also suggesting that there was more behind the decision than viewers initially knew. She revealed that Mason had gone on another date less than a day after they separated. The two continued talking for a period afterwards, but Layla said those conversations did not change her mind about ending the relationship.
Layla has since offered some reflection on what went wrong. She believes Mason may have reached a point where he felt he was simply “her boyfriend”, rather than an equal partner in her life.
Her friends, meanwhile, suggested that Mason may have struggled with the relationship dynamic because Layla was the primary breadwinner. That interpretation came from people around Layla rather than from Mason himself, so it remains their view of what happened rather than a confirmed explanation from him.
Since the breakup, Layla has largely shifted her attention away from Mason. She has spoken more openly about her bisexuality and revealed that she is now dating Kelsie Chesser, signalling that her life has moved into a very different chapter from the one viewers saw developing with Mason.
The Layla and Mason breakup is interesting because there does not appear to be one dramatic incident that neatly explains everything. Instead, the relationship seems to have been worn down by several smaller issues: communication, emotional distance, expectations around partnership and the imbalance Layla felt she was creating through her own actions. The New York argument simply appears to have exposed problems that were already sitting underneath the surface.
Layla and Mason’s breakup feels less like a sudden plot twist and more like the inevitable result of two people discovering that being happy together is not always the same as being compatible long term.
Layla seemed to put enormous effort into making the relationship work, but even she eventually recognised that expensive gifts cannot repair emotional distance. Mason’s complaint about being pushed away also suggests he felt there were walls he could not get through. And then there is the money issue, which made everything considerably messier.
If Layla really felt responsible for constantly giving more, that is exhausting for everyone involved. The fact Mason went on another date so quickly certainly adds an uncomfortable footnote, although it does not explain the breakup by itself. Ultimately, the pair may simply have realised they wanted different things from the relationship, which is far less dramatic than reality TV usually promises but probably much closer to reality.
For Secret Lives of Mormon Wives viewers, the bigger question now is what really happened between Layla and Mason that was not shown on screen. Was their New York argument the beginning of the end, or had the relationship already been struggling behind the scenes? And what do you make of Layla’s explanation of why things fell apart? Share your thoughts on whether the breakup came as a surprise.
