The film’s convincing human-and-robot doubles were created through a combination of body doubles, practical filming techniques and visual effects, giving Woodley and Whitehall real performers to work with rather than asking them to spend the entire production acting opposite thin air.

Directed by Casper Christensen and Anthony Hines, Robots is a sci-fi romantic comedy set in a near-future world where robots have become part of everyday life. Charles, played by Whitehall, is a wealthy businessman who uses an illegal look-alike robot called C2 to handle his romantic encounters. It is an impressively elaborate shortcut for someone who apparently considers personal effort an optional extra.

Elaine, played by Woodley, has a similar arrangement, using a robot called E2 to help her pursue dates and secure expensive gifts. The setup becomes considerably more complicated when Charles and Elaine discover that their respective robot doubles have developed their own personalities, fallen for each other and started pretending to be their human counterparts. Suddenly, outsourcing your personality comes with rather serious consequences.

The film is based on Robert Sheckley’s short story The Robot Who Looked Like Me, with its story built around identity, relationships and the increasingly blurry distinction between people and machines. That premise also created a fairly complicated production challenge because Woodley and Whitehall needed to appear alongside versions of themselves without simply relying on digital characters.

Rather than creating every duplicate entirely through CGI, the filmmakers used professional body doubles Jennifer Ingrum and Nic Wolfe during production. Ingrum served as the physical double for Elaine, E2 and E3, while Wolfe doubled for Charles and C2. Their contribution gave Woodley and Whitehall something tangible to respond to during scenes involving their duplicated characters.

That approach meant the actors could establish physical timing with another performer before the visual-effects team eventually combined the footage. It also helped make the robots behave like believable extensions of the human characters instead of looking like digital cut-outs awkwardly pasted into the same room.

For Woodley, working with Ingrum required a particularly precise performance. The two had to discuss movements and physical choices before filming so that Woodley could reproduce the actions when shooting the corresponding part of a scene. It sounds straightforward until you remember that acting normally involves reacting to whatever happens in front of you, rather than mentally keeping a spreadsheet of where your elbows need to be.

Woodley has described this mirroring process as one of the more difficult but rewarding aspects of making Robots. Because the movements needed to match between takes, there was less freedom to simply follow instinct in the moment. Every gesture, position and reaction had to be considered carefully so the eventual composite would look natural.

Whitehall faced a similar challenge with Wolfe while developing Charles and C2. The two versions of the character needed to feel connected without becoming identical. The performances therefore had to share certain physical qualities while retaining enough differences for viewers to immediately understand which version they were watching.

The production also avoided making the robots excessively stiff or mechanical. Woodley and Whitehall instead opted for relatively restrained performances, allowing C2 and E2 to exist somewhere between machine and human. That choice was important because the comedy works better when the robots feel almost normal rather than behaving like malfunctioning appliances every time they enter a room.

There was also room for Whitehall to bring some of his comic instincts into Charles and C2. His background in stand-up gave the character opportunities for improvisation, particularly in comedic moments, although the presence of body doubles and carefully matched performances naturally meant there were limits to how spontaneous some sequences could be.

The finished scenes were then completed through split-screen filming, compositing and VFX, allowing footage of the actors and doubles to be combined into apparently shared scenes. So, while CGI and visual effects were certainly part of the process, the illusion was not built entirely inside a computer. Much of the groundwork happened physically on set.

That practical element is arguably what makes the doubles in Robots more convincing. Having Woodley and Whitehall perform opposite real people gave the actors genuine timing and spatial references, while the body doubles could reproduce movements that were later replaced or visually integrated. The technology effectively came in to clean up the magic rather than create every bit of it from scratch.

Robots sounds like the kind of production that would make actors question every life choice that led them to the set. Playing one character is hard enough without having to play yourself, then play your robot, then copy somebody else copying your robot, all while remembering exactly where you stood three takes earlier. Yet the practical approach makes far more sense than simply throwing everything at CGI and hoping nobody notices. 

Woodley and Whitehall needed believable physical interaction, and the doubles gave them that foundation. There is something wonderfully old-school about solving a futuristic story with very human problems: choreography, timing and two people trying desperately to move in exactly the right way. The result also suits the film’s central idea, because the robots are supposed to feel close enough to humans that the distinction becomes uncomfortable. It is a clever production choice, and frankly, one worth appreciating.
