| The Affair Was Just the Beginning Ending Explained: The Real Secret Is Far Worse Than the Affair |
The Affair Was Just the Beginning (지금 불륜이 문제가 아닙니다) saves its biggest problem for the final episode. What begins as a story about suspected infidelity turns into something much messier, with several characters hiding different pieces of the same incident. By the time Episode 8 ends, the marriage at the centre of the story is effectively shattered, but the mystery surrounding the dead body is nowhere near resolved.
The finale deliberately brings almost everyone into the same house, forcing secrets that have been kept separate to collide. Gyeong Hui and Jae Hong have spent much of the drama protecting their respectable family image, but the final confrontation shows just how much resentment has been sitting underneath it. Their argument is not simply about who was unfaithful. It becomes an ugly reckoning over everything they have concealed from one another, including their involvement in what happened to Na Sol.
What actually happened to Na Sol?
One of the most important developments in the finale is the growing evidence that the story surrounding Na Sol's death is not what Jae Hong originally claimed. Na Do investigates after Soo Jung gives him information that makes him suspicious of Jae Hong. His investigation eventually connects Jae Hong and Gyeong Hui to the public toilet where Na Sol's credit card was discarded.
The CCTV footage becomes particularly important because it places both Jae Hong and Gyeong Hui at the location on the night of March 31. That does not, by itself, establish every detail of what happened to Na Sol, but it directly undermines the idea that the couple can simply dismiss the matter as unrelated to them.
The situation becomes even more complicated when Sang Cheol is revealed to know far more than he should. During the confrontation at Gyeong Hui's house, he claims that Soo Jung hired Na Sol to kill him. He also reveals that he has heard the family's conversations, meaning he has information that could potentially expose everyone involved.
So, by the end, the central mystery is no longer simply "who killed Na Sol?" The finale establishes that several people have connections to the incident, but it deliberately withholds enough information to prevent a neat explanation of exactly who planned what and why.
Why does Gyeong Hui ask for a divorce?
The divorce request is really the emotional conclusion of Gyeong Hui and Jae Hong's marriage rather than a reaction to one particular affair.
Their argument finally strips away the polished image they have both been maintaining. Gyeong Hui has spent much of the story trying to preserve her family, business and public reputation, while Jae Hong has his own secrets and explanations that he has kept from her. Once they start confronting one another, years of dissatisfaction spill out.
The accusations involving Bo Sung make matters even worse. Gyeong Hui is shocked when she discovers that Bo Sung is Min Seo's father, while Jae Hong refuses to accept that anything happened between his wife and Bo Sung. At the same time, Soo Jung's account of her relationship with Jae Hong gives Gyeong Hui another reason to question the husband she thought she understood.
What finally breaks her is not just jealousy. It is the realisation that their entire marriage has become a collection of concealed truths and mutual resentment. When Gyeong Hui asks for a divorce, it feels like the first genuinely decisive choice she makes for herself rather than for the image of her family.
The affair accusations become almost irrelevant
The irony of the finale is that everyone begins by trying to establish who was unfaithful, only for the question to become increasingly insignificant compared with everything else they are hiding.
Se Ji discovers a video while searching for evidence, believing it will help Min Seo. Instead, she finds a recording of her father and Min Seo's mother together. Elsewhere, Min Seo sees her own father attempting to be intimate with Gyeong Hui and is understandably devastated.
The revelations therefore move in both directions. The children discover that their parents have been keeping secrets from them, while the adults discover that their own secrets are no longer controllable. Even the distinction between victim and culprit becomes blurred because nearly everyone has something they are desperate to conceal.
That is why the title becomes increasingly meaningful by the finale. The affair really is no longer the main problem. It is simply the door through which the larger family mystery is exposed.
Who is Sang Cheol, and why is he so dangerous?
Sang Cheol's appearance inside the house changes the situation completely. He has secretly searched the property and eventually gets trapped there while trying to retrieve his phone. When the others finally unmask him, Jae Hong and Soo Jung recognise him.
His knowledge is what makes him dangerous. He has heard the conversations taking place in the house and knows enough about the family's involvement to understand that calling the police could have consequences for everyone.
Sang Cheol therefore tries to negotiate. He promises to protect their secret if they let him leave and demands his phone back. But Bo Sung has different plans. He wants the video and intends to involve the authorities, creating yet another conflict over who is manipulating whom.
The finale never gives Sang Cheol complete control of the situation. Instead, his attempt to escape contributes to the physical chaos that follows.
How does Sang Cheol get injured?
The confrontation becomes increasingly physical as everyone tries to stop someone else from taking control. Bo Sung wants to leave with information that could expose the others, Jae Hong tries to restrain him, and Sang Cheol attempts to get to his phone.
During the struggle, Sang Cheol slips and strikes his head against the glass table. He tries to get back up but falls again.
The important point is that the material does not establish a carefully planned act against Sang Cheol. His injury happens amid the chaotic struggle, making it another consequence of the group's inability to stop fighting and start thinking clearly.
The police are already outside because neighbours have become concerned about what is happening inside the house. That leaves the characters facing an immediate problem: they can no longer assume they have time to quietly clean up another disaster.
What happens to Se Ji and Min Seo?
The two girls leave together after being overwhelmed by what they have discovered about their parents. They are both hurt and angry, but they also realise they cannot simply disappear without somewhere to go.
They eventually reach the family's holiday house, apparently unaware of what is buried nearby.
That detail becomes one of the finale's most unsettling reveals. They notice an unusual smell and a slight protrusion in the ground, but they do not understand its significance. The audience, however, already knows enough about the adults' actions to recognise that this cannot be treated as an ordinary detail.
The girls then go into the garage and talk about what their parents might have done with the body from the accident. Unfortunately, someone else is close enough to hear them.
Who is Na Do, and why does the ending stop there?
Na Do has been investigating the mystery independently, and his hacker contact discovers that Gyeong Hui and Jae Hong have a holiday house close to the public toilet connected to Na Sol's discarded credit card.
That discovery brings him directly to the same location as Se Ji and Min Seo.
When the garage opens, Na Do recognises the two girls from their earlier encounter near his office. But this time, their conversation gives him something much more important: they mention a dead body and what their parents may have done with it.
Na Do immediately wants an explanation. He follows them inside the garage and locks the door.
And that is where the drama ends.
What does the final scene mean?
The ending is essentially a collision course between the people who know pieces of the truth.
The adults have spent the entire story trying to contain the consequences of the original incident. They lie to one another, hide evidence, protect their children and attempt to control who learns what. But the finale moves the secret directly towards the people who were never supposed to discover it.
Se Ji and Min Seo are now at the holiday house, apparently standing close to the physical evidence of the family's secret. Na Do has arrived and has heard enough to realise that the missing information he has been chasing may be connected to their parents.
That does not mean the finale confirms exactly what Na Do will discover next. It also does not explicitly establish every detail about the body or the roles of each adult. The final scene is designed as a cliffhanger rather than a complete resolution.
What has actually been resolved?
Gyeong Hui and Jae Hong's marriage is effectively finished. Their argument exposes how deeply damaged their relationship has become, and Gyeong Hui's request for a divorce is the clearest indication that she no longer wants to preserve the marriage at any cost.
The affair mystery has also been overtaken by the larger criminal mystery. The characters' relationships are exposed as far more complicated than the initial rumours suggested, while Sang Cheol's knowledge creates another serious threat to them.
Most importantly, Na Do is now following the correct trail. The discarded credit card, the CCTV footage, the holiday house and the girls' conversation all point towards the same hidden incident.
But the biggest question remains unanswered: what exactly happened to Na Sol, and how much did each person know or deliberately participate in?
The finale gives us enough information to understand that the adults' secrets are interconnected, but not enough to turn every piece of the puzzle into a confirmed fact. That ambiguity is deliberate. The story begins with everyone worrying about an affair, only to reveal that the affair was one of the least important secrets they were carrying.
The final image leaves the real danger with the next generation. Se Ji and Min Seo have unknowingly walked into the place where their parents' secret may finally be exposed, while Na Do is now standing right beside them. The adults spent the series trying to keep the past buried. By the closing moments, that secret is quite literally waiting beneath their feet.
Could The Affair Was Just the Beginning Return for Season 2?
For now, there is no official Season 2 renewal for The Affair Was Just the Beginning from Coupang Play, so viewers should not take the cliffhanger ending as confirmation that another chapter is coming. The drama has nevertheless performed strongly on the platform, holding the top spot among Coupang Play’s popular titles for three consecutive weeks and ranking first in Consumer Insight’s viewer satisfaction survey for Korean OTT original dramas in the third week of August.
That gives the series a solid audience response, but there is another important detail: Coupang Play has labelled Episode 8 as the drama’s “final episode”. The absence of a Limited Series designation leaves a small door open, particularly because the finale clearly leaves several mysteries hanging, but Korean dramas do not often receive follow-up seasons unless the story has been developed with that possibility in mind. At this stage, then, Season 2 looks more unlikely than inevitable, although the unresolved fate of Na Sol, Na Do’s discovery and the fallout from the family secrets could provide plenty of material for another season if Coupang Play chooses to continue it.
