The grand finale of Ride the Wind 2026, also known as Sisters Who Make Waves Season 7, delivered everything viewers expected from one of China's biggest variety shows: emotional speeches, spectacular performances, plenty of tears and, almost inevitably, a controversy powerful enough to dominate social media within minutes. While Pets Tseng celebrated a well-deserved overall victory, much of the conversation quickly shifted away from the winners and towards one name missing from the debut lineup — Sebrina Chen (Chen Yao).

After months of competition, the programme officially unveiled its 12-member group. Pets Tseng claimed the title of Annual Champion, becoming only the third Taiwanese artist to win the franchise after Ella and Cyndi Wang. Zhang Yue, who consistently ranked among the season's most popular contestants, was named Captain of the Year, recognising her leadership throughout the competition.

The final debut lineup featured Pets Tseng, Angelica Lee, An Qi, Zhang Yue, Stephanie Hsiao, Ye Yiqian, Wang Meng, Li Xiaoran, Sun Yi, Tang Yixin, Christine Fan, and Jill Hsu

Divided evenly into four teams, each captain walked away with three members, creating a balanced final group on paper. Whether fans believed it was balanced in reality is another story entirely.

Beyond the debut announcement, the finale also celebrated several individual achievements. Wang Meng received the Ride the Wind Person of the Year award, Li Xiaoran was recognised as the season's Highlight Figure, Sun Yi and Tang Yixin shared the Breakthrough Award, while veteran actress Stephanie Hsiao earned the Spirit Award for her contribution throughout the competition.

Visually, the finale was impossible to ignore. All 23 contestants appeared on stage wearing elegant blue Giorgio Armani outfits inspired by Mediterranean tones.

The coordinated styling gave the finale a polished cinematic look while still allowing each contestant's personality to shine through. Even viewers arguing about the results generally agreed the wardrobe department deserved a standing ovation. For once, nobody seemed interested in scoring the outfits.

Musically, the competition remained fierce until the very end. Zhang Yue's team topped the group performance with 918 points, while Pets Tseng's team followed closely with 905.

Their duet with Angelica Lee, Clouds That Bloom, received widespread praise, while Zhang Yue and Sebrina Chen Yao's emotional performance of Miss You 3000 also became one of the night's standout stages. Ironically, one of the evening's most talked-about performances still wasn't enough to secure a place for Chen Yao in the final group.

Sebrina Chen Yao Leaves Ride the Wind 2026 Finale in Tears as Fans React to Surprise Elimination

The biggest shock arrived when Sebrina Chen Yao finished in 14th place, narrowly missing the 12-member debut lineup by just 94 points.

As the final names were announced, the audience repeatedly chanted her name across the venue. When it became clear she would not debut, some fans could be heard shouting that the result made little sense, instantly turning the finale into one of the show's most debated endings in years.

The emotional scenes continued after filming ended. Videos circulating online showed Chen Yao leaving the venue in tears while repeatedly reassuring supporters that she was "fine" and explaining she was crying because she felt moved by the experience rather than disappointed.

Her calm response only seemed to make fans even more emotional, with many praising her grace despite what they considered a heartbreaking outcome.

The topic surrounding Chen Yao missing the final group rapidly climbed trending charts, with many viewers arguing they had expected her to debut based on her popularity throughout the season.

Her fan support, stage performances and consistent audience response had convinced many she was one of the safest bets to make the final lineup. Instead, her elimination became arguably an even bigger talking point than the announcement of the winner.

Another recurring criticism focused on the competition format itself. Many viewers questioned the decision to allocate three debut positions to each team, arguing the structure may have limited opportunities for higher-ranked contestants if too many popular participants happened to belong to the same squad.

While the programme has not suggested the system was anything other than its official format, the debate over whether team balance should outweigh individual popularity quickly spread across entertainment forums.

The scoring also attracted fresh scrutiny. Some viewers believed Pets Tseng's team deserved an even higher total than 905 points, while others felt Wang Meng's team scoring 872 did not match the quality of its performance. As with nearly every survival programme, once scorecards appear, amateur mathematicians suddenly emerge from every corner of the internet armed with calculators, screenshots and absolute confidence.

Many congratulated Pets Tseng, saying her victory reflected months of consistently strong performances and undeniable popularity. They celebrated Zhang Yue's leadership award and praised the final group's overall balance.

However, a significant number of viewers continued expressing disappointment over the absence of Sebrina Chen Yao, alongside contestants such as Xu Mengjie, Ulan Tuya, and Trang Phap, who were also widely expected to reach the final lineup.

So far, Sebrina Chen Yao has not released an official statement addressing her elimination beyond her brief comments to fans after the finale. That silence has only fuelled even more speculation as supporters continue to rally behind her online and hope for future opportunities beyond the show.

For Ride the Wind 2026, the season will undoubtedly be remembered for Pets Tseng's historic championship and the formation of a fresh new group. Yet, much like previous editions, the final conversation has become less about who debuted and more about who didn't.
