The race for the Miss Hong Kong 2026 crown is officially underway, and while nearly 100 hopefuls turned up at TVB City for the first round of interviews, the internet has already begun doing what it does best — judging every hairstyle, smile and fashion choice before the competition has even properly started. As the annual pageant returns with its new theme, "Dare To Be Perfect", several contestants have quickly emerged as early favourites, while others have unexpectedly become social media talking points for entirely different reasons.

Auditions for the latest edition of the iconic beauty pageant kicked off on 2 June at TVB City in Hong Kong's New Territories, just over a week after applications officially closed. Contestants from a wide range of backgrounds arrived for interviews, including university graduates, teachers, former child performers and experienced pageant competitors hoping to impress judges and secure a place in the next round.

This year's competition is already shaping up to be one of the most competitive in recent memory, largely because many contestants are entering with established online followings. Unlike previous years when several hopefuls were complete newcomers, a significant number of Miss Hong Kong 2026 participants are already known as influencers, content creators, social media personalities or aspiring models with thousands of followers across various platforms.

Their experience in front of cameras, understanding of personal branding and ability to engage audiences could prove to be a major advantage throughout the competition. At the same time, it also raises the stakes, as contestants are no longer just competing on stage but are constantly being compared online, where every appearance, interview and social media post is closely scrutinised by the public.

TVB's Assistant General Manager of Artist Management and Development, Virginia Lok, reportedly described many of the candidates as promising and charming, adding that several participants received particularly strong scores from the judging panel. While organisers appeared optimistic about this year's talent pool, public reaction online has been considerably more mixed.

As photographs from the auditions spread across social media platforms, some netizens questioned whether this year's contestants matched the standards associated with previous editions of Miss Hong Kong.

Others argued that judging participants solely from a few arrival photos was unfair, noting that confidence, personality and stage presence often become more apparent as the competition progresses.

Despite the debate, several contestants managed to stand out almost immediately. One of the most talked-about hopefuls is Winnie Lam, a 25-year-old piano teacher with an impressive academic background.

Holding a Master of Arts in Applied Linguistics from the University of Hong Kong, Winnie also revealed that she previously appeared in TVB dramas as a child actress, including Triumph in the Skies and L'Escargot.

Winnie is no stranger to pageant competitions either. Having competed in the Miss Asia Pageant Global Competition Hong Kong division in 2024, she believes the experience has given her valuable insight into handling pressure, interviews and public attention.

Combined with her ballet training and media experience, many viewers already see her as one of the more polished contestants in the early stages.

Another contestant attracting attention is Shania Fu, who previously captured the Miss Chinese Vancouver title in 2024. Her pageant experience was immediately noticeable during media interviews, with observers commenting on her confidence and composure in front of cameras.

Similarly, Helen Liu, winner of the Miss Exhibition Pageant 2025, entered the competition carrying expectations of her own. As someone already familiar with the demands of pageantry, she appeared comfortable interacting with reporters and photographers while many first-time contestants were still finding their footing.

Among the academically accomplished hopefuls, Zhen Zhongyi, aged 21, also generated discussion after returning from studies in the United Kingdom to participate in this year's competition. Her international background and educational achievements quickly made her one of the contestants drawing attention from both media outlets and pageant followers.

Another participant receiving positive comments is Cecilia Chen, who finished as second runner-up at the Miss Chinese Toronto Pageant 2025. Her social media presence and pageant experience have helped build familiarity among pageant enthusiasts, giving her a degree of recognition before the competition has even entered its later stages.

Of course, not every contestant became a talking point because of pageant credentials. Some gained attention simply by being memorable.

Perhaps the clearest example is Gigi Tsui, who returned after participating in last year's auditions. Many readers may remember her from 2025 when her distinctive wide smile earned her the playful nickname "Labubu" among netizens.

Rather than avoiding the nickname, Gigi embraced it with surprising humour. She even joked about it online, introducing herself as "LaGigi" in a light-hearted video that quickly attracted attention.

Returning this year with striking red hair, some local media outlets cheekily described her transformation as going from "Labubu" to "mermaid". In a competition often filled with carefully managed public images, her willingness to laugh at herself has arguably become one of her strongest assets.

Then there is Isabelle, a contestant who managed to spark conversation before even speaking publicly. Arriving with a Disney Princess backpack, she instantly stood out from the crowd of elegant dresses and designer handbags.

Netizens were equally fascinated by claims that she bears a resemblance to influencer Jeff Lam, better known as Tat Gor, as well as veteran entertainer Nancy Sit. Whether that comparison helps or hurts her chances remains a matter of opinion, but it certainly got people talking.

The online reaction to this year's contestants has been remarkably divided. Some viewers described the early lineup as refreshing and relatable, arguing that contestants appear more natural than overly polished.

Others were less impressed, claiming they were still waiting to see the "wow factor" usually associated with major pageant seasons. A number of comments joked that social media users seem to expect every contestant to look like a film star, a supermodel and a university gold medallist simultaneously.

There were also fans defending the contestants against criticism, pointing out that the first audition round rarely reveals who will ultimately shine.

Long-time pageant followers noted that several former winners were not considered favourites during their initial appearances, only winning over audiences through interviews, challenges and live performances later in the competition.

This year's theme, "Dare To Be Perfect", encourages contestants to embrace challenges, stay authentic and continuously improve themselves.

Whether that message resonates with audiences remains to be seen, but it certainly reflects the balancing act facing modern beauty pageants, where personality and individuality often matter just as much as appearance.

For now, Miss Hong Kong 2026 has delivered exactly what pageant season usually promises: ambitious contestants, unexpected viral moments, fierce online debates and plenty of opinions from people who somehow become professional judges overnight.

With more interviews scheduled throughout the week and additional contestants yet to appear, the conversation is only just beginning. Which hopeful has impressed you most so far, and do you think the eventual winner is already among these early faces, or is the real surprise still waiting to walk through the doors of TVB City?
