For the first time in its 21-year history, AKB48 has terminated a member’s contract, bringing a dramatic and highly public dispute involving Mei Hanada to an abrupt end. The decision has sent shockwaves through the idol world, not only because of the seriousness of the allegations but also because Hanada had been viewed as one of the group's rising faces just months ago. What began as concerns over her health and repeated lateness has now spiralled into a messy clash of conflicting claims, legal representation and a complete breakdown in communication.
According to AKB48 management and agency DH Co., Ltd., the 21-year-old member's exclusive contract was officially terminated on 23 June 2026. The company stated that Hanada had been dealing with health issues since late 2025 and was placed on a hiatus so she could focus on recovery.
During that process, however, management said it discovered that she had maintained a private connection with a specific fan that allegedly went beyond the two accidental meetings she initially described.
Management argued that such relationships violate long-standing rules designed to protect fairness among members and maintain trust with supporters.
Yet despite the alleged breach, the agency insists it still wanted to facilitate Hanada's return to AKB48. The company says it repeatedly attempted to hold discussions regarding a possible comeback, only to be met with refusals.
Things became significantly more complicated when Hanada allegedly raised several demands during the dispute. According to management, she wanted disciplinary action taken against members she believed had spoken negatively about her and requested that a ban placed on the fan involved be lifted.
The agency maintained that both matters fell under management discretion and could not simply be granted. The most controversial aspect of the case revolves around Hanada's claim that she felt pressured into shaving her head.
Management has categorically denied ever instructing or requiring her to do so. The company says no staff member ordered such an action and rejected suggestions that shaving her head was a condition for remaining in the group.
Hanada Mei, however, has presented a very different version of events. In a personal statement following the termination, she admitted meeting the fan privately and acknowledged that holding hands with him in public was an irresponsible decision that failed to meet the standards expected of an idol.

She apologised directly to supporters and accepted responsibility for that mistake. At the same time, Hanada claimed discussions with management became increasingly distressing.
She alleged she was repeatedly questioned about whether she was romantically involved with the fan and said references were made to former idol scandals involving public displays of remorse.
According to Hanada Mei, conversations about shaving her head surfaced repeatedly during meetings, leaving her with the impression that it was the only realistic path toward remaining in AKB48.
The irony at the centre of the controversy is almost impossible to ignore. Hanada says she eventually shaved her head because she believed it was expected of her.
Management says it never asked her to do so. Somewhere between those two positions lies a version of events that only the people in those rooms fully understand. Unfortunately, that gap appears to have become too wide to bridge.
The situation deteriorated further when communication reportedly shifted through lawyers. Management claims Hanada ultimately declined additional discussions through her legal representative, leaving negotiations effectively frozen.
The agency concluded that with no agreement in sight and direct communication no longer possible, contract termination became unavoidable. What makes the story even more remarkable is how quickly Hanada's career had been rising beforehand.
Joining AKB48 as a 19th-generation trainee in 2024, she became a full member and secured places in multiple consecutive single line-ups.

Many fans had viewed her as part of the group's next generation of leading performers. Instead, she has now become linked to a milestone nobody wanted to see — the first contract termination in AKB48 history.
Some fans believe management acted appropriately if internal rules were broken and discussions repeatedly rejected. Others argue that Hanada's public account raises uncomfortable questions about how idol agencies handle disciplinary situations behind closed doors.
A third group appears exhausted by the entire saga, joking that every new statement somehow creates more questions than answers. In typical internet fashion, some supporters have become amateur detectives, while others have simply declared that everyone involved needs a very long holiday and a stronger communications department.
Japanese and international netizens have also pointed out the stark contrast between the two narratives. Supporters of Hanada argue that her emotional statement feels sincere and reflects someone who wanted to remain part of the group.
Critics, meanwhile, note that she openly admitted to conduct that violated expectations and question why discussions reportedly reached such a complete standstill. The result is a debate with very few clear winners and plenty of conflicting opinions.
For AKB48, the episode represents one of the most challenging public controversies the group has faced in recent years. For Hanada, it marks the end of a journey she says she never wanted to leave behind.
Whether future revelations provide greater clarity remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: this story is unlikely to disappear from fan discussions anytime soon.
Do you think management made the correct decision, or does Hanada's version of events raise bigger questions about idol culture? The debate is already raging, and readers certainly have plenty to say.
