Anna Pigeon Season 1, Episode 7 turns the investigation into a far more personal fight as Anna discovers the person behind her ordeal is connected to the Paulson family. What begins with a missing body and doubts over Anna’s account quickly becomes a tense race for evidence, while Bethany’s seemingly harmless concern takes a very different turn. By the end, the episode delivers a twist that reshapes several relationships and gives Anna a small but meaningful step towards recovery.
The episode opens with Anna taking Stanton, Zoey and Manny to the cave, convinced they are finally going to arrest the person responsible. Instead, they find absolutely nothing. The cave is empty, there is no obvious trace that Anna was ever there, and even the body has disappeared. It is hardly the kind of evidence that makes for a convincing police report, leaving everyone in the awkward position of wanting to trust Anna while having very little they can actually prove.
Zoey takes Anna to hospital, where doctors determine that she has suffered a concussion and is severely dehydrated. Naturally, Anna responds to medical advice in the most Anna way possible: by refusing to stay overnight. She returns home instead, turns down Zoey’s offer to stay with her and even recoils when Jesse tries to comfort her. She is clearly struggling with what happened, but accepting help appears to be another battle entirely.
Things become even more unsettling when Anna notices a mark left on her back by the attacker while taking a shower. Most of her belongings have also been taken, although Jesse fortunately brought the box containing them when he visited. The discovery gives Anna another physical clue that what happened was real, even if the missing evidence makes the situation increasingly frustrating.
Still recovering, Anna returns to the forest the following day to work out what she might have overlooked. Stanton finds her there and decides to help rather than waste time arguing about whether she should be resting.
Together, they follow the small clues left behind and eventually discover the body of the woman who had previously been buried in the cave. The killer had apparently attempted to dispose of her by throwing her from a cliff, which adds another grim layer to an already complicated investigation.
The coroner’s findings provide an important breakthrough. The woman had been assaulted before her death, and investigators believe she was attacked and killed at her campsite. Anna then asks whether the victim had also been marked.
Stanton immediately understands why she is asking and realises that the mark on Anna’s back could connect her experience to the wider case. Anna finally shows him the injury, giving the investigation a much clearer direction.
Back at the office, Bethany arrives carrying baked goods and asking about Anna. It seems like a perfectly ordinary gesture of concern, although with hindsight, the episode is practically waving a giant warning flag. Zoey explains that Anna ignored the doctor’s instructions and went straight back into the forest, which is hardly surprising by this point.
Anna and Stanton then investigate the man who had previously threatened Anna after she broke his radio. They track down Caleb at his trailer and question him about his connection to the case. Anna notices that he is wearing a watch belonging to one of her friends, and Caleb eventually admits that he helped someone move a body. Stanton spots blood on the watch, while Anna notices the engraving, leading them towards the Paulson family.
Their attention turns to JP, who is revealed to be Jeremiah Paulson’s nephew. His bruising also makes him look suspicious, particularly because Anna had kicked her attacker in the face while escaping. Suddenly, the clues are beginning to line up rather neatly.
Unfortunately, suspicion is not enough. Jeremiah arrives with JP and a lawyer, and Stanton attempts to get the nephew to admit his involvement. JP refuses to give them what they need, leaving the investigators with circumstantial evidence rather than grounds to hold him. Jeremiah remains frustratingly confident, which is one way of describing the sort of person who apparently treats a police investigation like an opportunity to win an argument.
Anna then has to tell Kay’s friends about Kay’s murder, promising that she will get justice for her. Her anger is obvious as she goes after JP and his group, telling him that she will make him pay. Jeremiah pushes her aside and throws the challenge back at her, telling her to find the evidence. It is an infuriating moment because he knows the investigation has not yet reached the point where Anna can simply force the truth into the open.
Bethany later offers to walk Anna home, but she is visibly frightened by everything happening around them. During their conversation, she questions how Anna can remain so brave after everything she has endured. Anna then reveals the devastating truth about her husband’s murder, giving Bethany a glimpse into the grief Anna has been carrying for much longer than this case.
At home, Bethany tells Manny that she is worried and suggests that they leave the park. She proposes contacting her estranged father, who has recently returned to her life, but Manny rejects the idea. He has little patience for a man who has made no meaningful effort to repair their relationship, and the conversation quietly establishes how much resentment is still sitting beneath the surface.
That night, Anna begins unpacking her belongings while Stanton spends time with Jesse around a campfire. The quieter moments provide a brief pause after the episode’s relentless run of discoveries, although the danger surrounding Anna is obviously far from over.
The following morning, Zoey tells Anna and Stanton that someone using the Paulson ranch truck likely dropped Anna’s belongings at the post office. Anna immediately comes up with a risky plan: lure JP into taking her back to the cave. Zoey knows it is dangerous but agrees to support her, while Frieda and Stanton also get involved.
Anna visits JP while Jeremiah is away and deliberately changes her approach. She apologises and pretends that accusing JP of Kay’s murder was all a terrible misunderstanding. Then she asks him to help her by taking her back to the cave. JP’s ego does the rest. He agrees almost immediately and even offers to drive, apparently forgetting that confidence and good judgement are not always the same thing.
Then Bethany arrives, and Anna begins feeling dizzy after drinking something. She notices the sandwiches and suddenly connects the dots, realising that Bethany was involved in her unlawful detention. The woman who had been bringing baked goods and checking on Anna has been hiding something far more serious.
Bethany takes Anna away and orders JP to move his truck. Meanwhile, Stanton and Zoey realise something has gone badly wrong when Anna fails to arrive at the cave. Their search eventually leads them to the river, where Bethany intends to drown Anna. Fortunately, Anna had prepared for the possibility that her plan could collapse. She uses her taser on Bethany and manages to arrest her before the situation becomes even worse.
A search of Bethany’s home uncovers a substantial amount of incriminating evidence, confirming that her involvement was much deeper than anyone expected. Anna later asks Jesse for some time alone and thanks him for raising the alarm when she disappeared, finally allowing herself to acknowledge that his concern mattered.
Manny is devastated when he learns that his wife helped cover up a murder and attempted to kill Anna. Bethany explains that she resented Anna for arriving at the park and appearing so fearless. After JP told her what had happened and asked for her help, Bethany saw an opportunity to prove herself to Jeremiah Paulson, apparently believing that winning his approval could somehow repair years of emotional neglect.
The biggest revelation comes when Bethany asks Manny to contact her father. It turns out that Jeremiah Paulson is Bethany’s biological father. Her actions were driven partly by a lifelong desire for his attention and affection, something he had never properly given her. In a particularly cold final blow, Jeremiah does not even answer when Manny calls him using Bethany’s phone. After everything she did for his approval, he still cannot be bothered to pick up.
The episode closes on a much warmer note as Zoey takes Anna hiking to see the buffalo. More importantly, she reassures Anna that she and the others are there for her. After everything that has happened, Anna finally begins to recognise that she does not have to face the darkness alone. She is ready to start finding her way back towards the light, leaving at least some of her despair behind.
My 135-word opinion: Episode 7 is easily one of the more emotionally loaded chapters of Anna Pigeon, but it wisely avoids making the mystery the only thing worth watching. The Bethany twist works because the episode spends enough time presenting her as someone worried about Anna, making the eventual betrayal feel genuinely uncomfortable rather than simply random.
Her connection to Jeremiah also adds another layer to the Paulson storyline, although her desperate attempt to earn his approval is both tragic and painfully misguided. Anna remains stubborn to the point of exhaustion, yet that is also what makes her compelling. The final hiking scene gives the episode a welcome emotional release after all the betrayals, missing bodies and questionable life choices.
