Demi Engemann’s absence from The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives season 5 has left viewers wondering what happened to one of the show’s more outspoken cast members. After gradually stepping back during season 4, Demi is now completely missing from the latest season, and she has explained that her decision was largely connected to protecting her mental health rather than simply walking away after one dramatic fallout.
The Hulu reality series had already begun reducing Demi’s presence before she disappeared altogether. She joined The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives as part of the original cast, initially standing out for being unusually open about her personal life.
But as the seasons progressed, tensions within the group became increasingly difficult to ignore, particularly after a dispute involving Jessi Ngatikaura and claims about cast members and production.
That disagreement quickly became part of a much larger chain of arguments. Marciano Brunette later made claims about becoming close to Demi and also discussed an alleged relationship involving Jessi, creating another source of tension among the cast.
Demi subsequently made allegations about Marciano, while he responded with a defamation lawsuit. Other cast members publicly disputed Demi’s account, leaving her increasingly isolated within the group.
By season 4, the shift in Demi’s position on the show was hard to miss. She was no longer presented as a main cast member and instead appeared in a “friend of” role, with considerably less screen time than she had enjoyed during the earlier seasons.
She also did not feature in confessionals and was absent from the executive producer credits attached to several of the main cast members. In other words, the writing was already on the wall, even if nobody had officially announced that she was heading for the exit.
Demi later explained that her reduced involvement was partly a decision based on her mental health. Rather than making one dramatic announcement and disappearing overnight, she described the process as more gradual. She had already begun distancing herself from the MomTok group and appeared less interested in being pulled back into the cycle of arguments that had come to define much of her time around the cast.
In December 2025, Demi indicated that a return to the series had not been completely ruled out. She said the door was “wide open”, but she wanted to take her time and work out what was actually right for her. That was particularly telling because she did not frame her decision as something she regretted. Instead, she appeared comfortable with the flexibility that came from having a smaller role and being able to decide when she wanted to participate.
That approach ultimately led to her absence from season 5. Demi did not necessarily leave The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives in one clean break; she gradually stepped further away until there was barely a role left for her. By the time the new season arrived, she was no longer part of the cast and was not included in the roll credits.
There is also a wider point here about reality television. Cast members are often expected to keep showing up for the next argument, the next revelation and, presumably, the next dinner where everyone somehow manages to sit at the same table despite spending the previous episode falling out. Demi’s decision suggests that sometimes stepping away is the more sensible option. Whatever viewers think about the conflicts surrounding her, choosing less screen time can be a perfectly reasonable response when the experience is no longer enjoyable.
My take is that Demi’s exit feels less like a shocking reality-TV disappearance and more like the natural conclusion of a relationship with the show that had already been changing for some time.
Her role had been reduced, her connections with the wider group had become complicated, and she had made it clear that she was distancing herself from MomTok. So, season 5 arriving without her does not feel completely out of nowhere.
If anything, it would have been stranger to see her suddenly return at full volume as though none of the previous seasons had happened. Reality TV loves a comeback, of course, but sometimes a cast member deciding not to jump back into the chaos is the most interesting decision of all. And with Demi saying the door remains open, the bigger question is whether she will eventually walk through it again. Would you actually want to see her return?
