Tian Xiwei has spent years being labelled the “sweet girl” of Chinese dramas, but Born with Luck (低智商犯罪) has completely thrown that image out of the window and honestly set it on fire with a flamethrower. The actress is now gaining attention for swapping soft romance roles and delicate styling for police uniforms, messy action scenes and chaotic criminal investigations alongside veteran actor Wang Xiao. And according to Tian Xiwei herself, the role was more than just another drama project. It was apparently the dream job she had wanted for years.

The 2026 crime-comedy mystery series has quickly become one of iQIYI’s most talked-about releases thanks to its bizarre but addictive formula: “high-IQ planning, low-IQ execution.” Which, to be fair, sounds suspiciously close to how many people survive adulthood anyway. Adapted from a novel by mystery writer Zi Jin Chen, the drama combines murder investigations, absurd gangsters, serial crimes and hilariously incompetent criminals into one chaotic package that somehow works frighteningly well.

In the series, Wang Xiao plays Zhang Yiang, a laid-back police officer dragged back into frontline investigations after receiving an anonymous tip letter connected to a major case.

He solves problems less through polished detective brilliance and more through accidental luck, intuition and the exhausted energy of a man who has clearly seen too much nonsense in life already.

Meanwhile, Tian Xiwei plays rookie officer Li Qian, a newly graduated policewoman who charges into situations with pure confidence and almost dangerous levels of enthusiasm.

She is impulsive, clever, stubborn and constantly clashes with Zhang Yiang’s calmer personality. Their mentor-rookie partnership has become one of the drama’s biggest highlights, with viewers calling them “the chaotic police duo nobody expected to love this much”.

What surprised many viewers most was Tian Xiwei’s complete image transformation. Gone are the glamorous filters and polished “sweet romance heroine” styling.

In Born with Luck, she appears mostly with minimal makeup, a sharp high ponytail and police uniform scenes that lean heavily into realism.

The actress also personally handled several demanding action sequences herself, including one now-viral scene where Li Qian confronts criminals using a flamethrower.

Yes, a flamethrower. Because apparently standard rookie police training in drama land now includes becoming an action film protagonist overnight.

Fans online immediately flooded social media praising how naturally Tian Xiwei fit the role. Many described her as “the chosen policewoman”, while long-time viewers of Pursuit of Jade referenced famous lines from her previous drama to praise her heroic aura. One viral comment joked, “Last time she was butchering pigs, now she is hunting criminals. Character development really won.”

During a recent livestream event promoting the series, Tian Xiwei openly admitted that playing Li Qian fulfilled her long-time wish of portraying a police officer onscreen. She also confessed she became genuinely overexcited after learning she would be acting alongside Wang Xiao.

According to Tian Xiwei, her reaction after receiving the offer was simply yelling, “I’m in! I’m in! I’m in!” repeatedly in excitement. The actress laughed while recalling the moment, while Wang Xiao sitting beside her looked deeply amused by the memory. C-netz quickly praised her honesty, saying her reaction felt refreshingly genuine in an industry where actors sometimes pretend they calmly “carefully considered the script artistically” before accepting a role. Tian apparently skipped all of that and went straight into full fan mode.

The chemistry between the cast has also become a major talking point behind the scenes. Coincidentally, Born with Luck premiered on Wang Xiao’s birthday, leading to one of the drama’s most talked-about promotional moments.

During a livestream celebration, Tian Xiwei suddenly appeared wearing a giant pink strawberry cake costume while the cast sang for Wang Xiao. Viewers described the scene as “completely unserious energy” and said it perfectly matched the chaotic humour of the drama itself.

Off-camera stories from the production have only made audiences warmer towards Tian Xiwei. Wang Xiao revealed during interviews that Tian frequently shared snacks with cast and crew members while filming.

He casually mentioned once that he liked her sour candy, only to discover a full pack specially left for him in the dressing room the next day. The small gesture quickly spread online, with fans joking that Tian Xiwei’s true hidden talent is apparently adopting entire production teams through snacks.

Director Liu Haibo also openly praised Tian Xiwei’s performance, admitting she exceeded his expectations during filming. According to him, even though she had never played a police officer before, the moment she wore the uniform she completely became Li Qian.

He described her as having both youthful energy and quiet inner toughness, something he believed perfectly matched the character’s intelligence and emotional resilience.

Viewers have particularly praised the drama’s unusual tone. Unlike traditional heavy crime thrillers, Born with Luck constantly balances suspense with absurd comedy. Much of the humour comes from the criminal side of the story, especially Wang Chuanjun’s explosive performance as antagonist Zhou Rong, a permanently angry man forced to deal with teammates who collectively possess the survival instincts of confused pigeons.

Despite the comedy, the drama still slowly unpacks a darker mystery involving serial murder cases, anonymous letters and the death of a former criminal investigation captain. As Zhang Yiang and Li Qian dig deeper into the truth, the story becomes increasingly chaotic, emotional and unpredictable. Audiences have praised the drama for making them laugh one second before suddenly dropping serious emotional twists the next. Several viewers joked online that they started watching for Tian Xiwei’s police uniform and accidentally stayed for the emotional damage.

Many also credited iQIYI for finally giving Tian Xiwei a role that allowed her to break away from repetitive casting. For years, viewers had complained that the actress was constantly pushed into overly sweet romance roles despite clearly having stronger range underneath. Born with Luck seems to have changed that conversation almost overnight.

What about you — does Officer Li Qian feel like Tian Xiwei’s best role yet, or are fans getting carried away by the chaos?
