| Last Seen Season 1 Episode 5 Recap & Review. |
Last Seen Season 1 Episode 5 turns the investigation into a much more dangerous affair, as Ian finally gets close enough to Henry to expose the truth about Sarah — only for the situation to explode into violence. What begins with Ian chasing answers about Maggie ends with Bill dead, Jenna wounded and Henry fleeing with Sarah, leaving the family’s carefully protected secret in complete chaos.
The episode opens with Donnie struggling to keep his composure while talking to Henry about Ian. Henry tries to steady him, reminding Donnie that he and Jenna are Sarah’s parents, not Ian. It is the sort of reassurance that sounds convincing for about five seconds, especially when the person asking questions is getting increasingly difficult to shake.
Ian, meanwhile, is not exactly embracing the concept of patience. After meeting Henry’s brother, he follows him and nearly forces him off the road. Unfortunately for Ian, Henry is not the one who ends up crashing. Ian rolls his own car and loses sight of Henry, turning what was meant to be a pursuit into another very expensive-looking mistake.
Back at the police department, Ian tells Isabel Pena what he knows. Her investigation into Henry has produced only scraps of information, including an office at a business park in Gellong. There is still no clear picture of who Henry really is or how deeply he is connected to Maggie’s disappearance, but the gaps in his story are becoming increasingly difficult to ignore.
Henry is feeling the pressure too. At home, he becomes increasingly rattled and tells Sarah that “bad people” are coming. He warns that he and Jenna could be arrested and that Sarah could be taken away from them. Henry has spent years presenting himself as the person protecting the family, but that protection is now starting to look more like a desperate attempt to keep everything buried.
Donnie is brought in for questioning while Ian waits nearby. Isabel and Ben press him about Maggie, Henry and the possibility that Henry was responsible for burying the body in the woods. They also want Henry’s address. Donnie is clearly uncomfortable, but before the questioning can go much further, Ben receives a message that abruptly changes the situation.
The unexpected visitor is Henry himself.
Henry has walked into the police station intending to report Ian for reckless driving, presumably believing that he can turn the tables. Instead, Isabel uses the opportunity to confront him over the kidnapping allegations. It is an impressively awkward choice of timing from Henry, considering he has effectively delivered himself straight into the middle of the investigation.
Isabel persuades Henry to take her and Ben to his house so they can settle the matter. Ian manages to tag along as well, although Isabel makes it very clear that he is to remain inside the vehicle. Naturally, Ian is not exactly the sort of person who makes this instruction look particularly reassuring.
At Henry’s home, the officers meet Sarah. Isabel immediately asks for documentation proving that Sarah is Henry’s daughter, particularly a birth certificate. The situation becomes more suspicious when Sarah appears to match Maggie’s profile closely enough to raise serious questions.
The paperwork, however, appears legitimate. Isabel refuses to let Ian turn the encounter into another argument, particularly when he begins questioning whether the documents can be trusted. From her perspective, there is nothing there that allows them to keep pushing Henry on the spot. The search for Maggie therefore continues.
Ian refuses to let the matter rest. Using Bill’s police credentials, he obtains confirmation that Sarah’s identity checks out. That should have settled things, but Debbie is furious with Ian and once again tells him off for dragging the investigation further than it needs to go. At this point, Ian is collecting angry reactions almost as efficiently as he is collecting clues.
Elsewhere, Jenna visits the flower shop and ends up talking to Debbie about her pregnancy. Their conversation becomes unexpectedly personal when Jenna admits she envies Debbie and asks questions about moving on. She also mentions that Henry “tried to fix it”, but before she can explain what she means, Debbie realises exactly who Jenna is.
Jenna leaves before the confrontation can escalate, but the encounter clearly rattles her. She later goes to Donnie at the docks, where he is already uncomfortable about everything that has happened. Ian wants answers, but Donnie refuses to help. He does not deny that Henry kidnapped Maggie; instead, he simply tells Ian that there is nothing he can do.
Donnie's frustration eventually turns towards Jenna. He asks how she could do what she did to a little girl. Jenna apologises, but this time she is determined to stop running from what happened. She wants to tell Donnie the truth, even if that truth threatens everything she and Henry have built.
Henry reaches a different conclusion. He wants the family to leave before the police can close in, insisting that getting away is the only way to protect Sarah and Jenna. His instinct remains the same as it has been throughout the episode: control the situation, move the family somewhere safe and avoid allowing anyone to uncover what really happened.
Then everything falls apart.
Bill and Ian arrive at Henry’s house, with Ian revealing that Debbie has been taken to hospital after the stress surrounding the flower shop. Ian also brings out an old baby toy and plays its familiar lullaby. Sarah hears the sound and comes outside, drawn towards it.
Henry immediately grabs his shotgun.
Jenna finally tells Sarah the truth: Sarah is not their child. Before anyone can properly process the revelation, Henry fires at Bill. Bill is fatally wounded, while Jenna is also shot in the chaos. Henry then gets Sarah and Jenna into the car and drives away, leaving Ian behind with the consequences of an investigation that has finally turned deadly.
The ending is brutal because the episode spends most of its running time tightening the net around Henry, only to show exactly what happens when that net finally closes. He is no longer simply hiding information or manipulating the people around him; he is now willing to use violence to get his family out.
Episode 5 is where Last Seen properly loses its brakes. Ian has spent much of the season chasing clues, making questionable decisions and generally behaving like someone who has forgotten that police work usually benefits from patience. Here, though, his persistence finally gets him close to the truth. Henry is arguably even more interesting because his behaviour becomes increasingly desperate without turning into a simple villain routine.
He genuinely believes he is protecting Sarah and Jenna, but every attempt to “protect” them creates a bigger disaster. The Sarah reveal is the episode’s strongest moment because it completely changes the meaning of the family dynamic. Then the shotgun ending takes everything up another level. Bill’s death and Jenna’s injury leave the story in a much darker place, while Henry’s escape raises an obvious question: how far can he run before the truth catches up?
By the final scene, Last Seen Season 1 Episode 5 has moved the mystery from a missing-person investigation into a full-blown family crisis, with Sarah finally at the centre of the truth rather than simply being protected from it. Henry is on the run, Jenna has been wounded, Bill is dead and Ian now has more reason than ever to keep chasing them. What did you make of the Sarah reveal and Henry’s decision to shoot Bill — and do you think Jenna can still turn the situation around?
