Masumoto Kira is leaving Sakurazaka46, and fans already knew what that meant the second her blog notification appeared. In the Sakamichi world, a sudden member blog update rarely ends with “good news everyone”.On 16 May 2026, the 24-year-old idol officially announced that she will graduate from the group following activities for Sakurazaka46’s upcoming 15th single, “Lonesome rabbit/What’s ‘KAZOKU’?”, due for release on 10 June.

The announcement immediately sent fans across Japanese social media into full emotional damage mode, with “Kirako graduation” trending as supporters tried to process the end of another long-running second generation chapter. Graduation may be a normal part of idol culture, especially within the Sakamichi Series, but that does not stop fans reacting like somebody just cancelled happiness itself every single time.

In her blog post, Masumoto Kira reflected on her eight-year journey from audition applicant to Sakurazaka46 member, admitting the decision had taken a long time and was far from impulsive.

She wrote that she entered the audition at 16 and has now reached adulthood within the group, describing the experiences, emotions and memories she gained through both Keyakizaka46 and Sakurazaka46 as “treasures for life”.

The tone of the message felt calm, mature and surprisingly grounded. Rather than framing her graduation as regretful or dramatic, Masumoto Kira explained that she feels she has fully completed what she wanted to achieve.

She openly acknowledged both the dreams she managed to realise and the ones that never happened, saying there are some things people only understand after genuinely trying. It was the sort of reflective idol graduation statement that somehow makes fans proud and devastated at the exact same time.

She also thanked fans repeatedly throughout the post, crediting them for guiding her towards opportunities and experiences she never imagined possible. One particularly emotional section saw Masumoto Kira admitting she often lacked confidence in herself, even when fans praised her constantly.

Over time, however, their support gradually convinced her that perhaps she had become “someone’s light” after all. Naturally, fans immediately responded by collectively crying into their timelines.

Masumoto Kira further described Sakurazaka46 as a uniquely warm environment where kindness constantly passes from one person to another.

She praised not only members but also staff and managers, saying the group taught her what genuine human warmth feels like. In typical idol graduation fashion, the statement somehow managed to sound like both a farewell speech and an emotional final episode narration at the same time.

Still, despite the emotional tone, she made it clear this was not a rushed decision. According to Masumoto Kira, she spent a long period thinking carefully and discussing her future before deciding to graduate.

She admitted leaving the group feels frightening, but also said there comes a point where taking the next step becomes unavoidable. It was honest, realistic and probably hit harder because it did not try too hard to sound dramatic.

For many fans, Masumoto Kira represented one of the most distinct personalities within Sakurazaka46’s second generation lineup. Known affectionately as “Kirako” and “Kirachan”, she developed a reputation for her unpredictable humour, awkward charm and quietly sharp presence during variety appearances and group content.

Her stint as a seasonal regular on TBS programme “Love it!” back in 2023 also helped broaden her visibility beyond the group’s core fandom.

Masumoto Kira’s idol journey began in 2018 when she passed the famous Sakamichi Joint Auditions, later joining the Sakamichi Kenshusei trainee system before officially becoming part of Keyakizaka46’s second generation in February 2020.

Following the group’s transition into Sakurazaka46 later that same year, she continued as part of the rebranded generation that helped shape the group’s newer identity after the turbulent final years of Keyakizaka.

Her graduation now marks the second Sakurazaka46 departure announcement of 2026 following Takemoto Yui’s earlier exit announcement in February.

While graduations remain extremely common within the Sakamichi ecosystem, especially as members pursue acting, modelling or quieter lives away from entertainment, fans still treat each announcement like an emotional national event. Some supporters joked online that Sakamichi fans have developed “professional grief processing skills” at this point.

Reaction online has been deeply mixed between sadness, acceptance and cautious curiosity about Masumoto Kira’s future plans. Many fans praised the thoughtful tone of her message and said the announcement felt “very Kira-like”, calm but sincere.

Others admitted they had expected the graduation eventually after noticing subtle changes in her activity levels and recent interviews. Meanwhile, some fans have already started debating whether management will organise a dedicated graduation concert or simply include her farewell within regular single promotions.

Historically, not every Sakurazaka46 member receives a large-scale graduation concert, with those events usually reserved for particularly senior or massively high-profile figures.

Even so, many supporters are still hoping Masumoto Kira receives a proper farewell stage considering her long history with the group and strong popularity among second generation fans. Japanese fans online were especially emotional over her line declaring that “the remaining time is my turn”, interpreting it as her promise to spend the final weeks giving back directly to supporters.

There is also growing conversation about what her departure means for Sakurazaka46’s second generation as a whole. With members gradually entering their mid-twenties, fans are becoming increasingly aware that the era defining the group’s early Sakurazaka identity will not last forever.

It is the unavoidable cycle of idol groups: new faces arrive, familiar faces leave, and fans somehow continue pretending they are emotionally prepared every single time despite overwhelming evidence suggesting otherwise.

For now, though, Masumoto Kira says she wants the remaining promotional period for the 15th single to be fun and meaningful until the very end.

Whether she moves into entertainment work, acting, television or quietly disappears from public life entirely remains unknown. In Sakamichi history, both paths happen regularly. Some graduates chase new ambitions while others simply choose peace away from cameras and handshake queues.

One thing is certain: Masumoto Kira leaves behind a reputation as one of Sakurazaka46’s most memorable second generation personalities, someone who quietly carved out her own space without ever forcing herself into the spotlight.

And judging by fan reactions today, that impact clearly lasted longer than she may have realised herself. So now the question fans are already asking everywhere is simple — what should her final stage look like, and which Sakurazaka46 song would hit hardest as her last performance?
