Hulu’s The Testaments just delivered the kind of episode that leaves viewers staring at the credits in complete silence before immediately opening social media to scream into the void. Episode 9 turns Becka’s storyline into a full tragedy, with one shocking death after another, and by the end of it all, fans are now asking the same question: is Becka’s mother really dead, and does this mean actress Kate Hewlett has officially left the series? The short answer is yes, and honestly, Gilead somehow managed to become even more horrifying despite already operating like the world’s worst family counselling programme.

The penultimate episode wastes absolutely no time throwing Becka into chaos after she kills Dr. Grove, the man responsible for assaulting Agnes. What makes the situation even messier is that nobody around Becka fully disagrees with why she did it. Gilead spent years teaching girls about “justice”, obedience, punishment, and morality, only to suddenly panic when someone actually retaliates against a powerful man. The hypocrisy is so loud it may as well have had its own screen credit.

As the fallout explodes across Gilead, everyone scrambles to save Becka before the regime destroys her. Aunt Lydia understands immediately that Becka’s future is hanging by a thread.

Commander Judd makes it painfully clear there are only two outcomes available for her: execution at the Wall or being turned into a Handmaid. Neither option exactly screams “bright future”.

Meanwhile, Agnes reveals to Commander Weston that she was also assaulted by Grove, which finally pushes Weston into helping Becka escape immediate punishment.

For a brief moment, it almost feels like there might be hope. That feeling lasts about five minutes because this is The Testaments, where happiness is treated like contraband.

The emotional core of the episode arrives when Aunt Lydia proposes a horrifying solution. In order to save Becka, someone else must confess to killing Dr. Grove. That person becomes Becka’s mother.

During a tense meeting watched over by the Eyes, Lydia explains the fabricated story they need to tell authorities. According to the new version of events, Becka discovered her mother standing over Grove’s body and falsely confessed in an attempt to protect her.

The devastating part is how quickly Becka’s mother understands the sacrifice being asked of her. She barely hesitates. She knows exactly what will happen if she accepts blame, but she also knows her daughter has no chance otherwise.

It becomes one of the episode’s most painful moments because nobody in that room is pretending there will be a miracle waiting at the end. Gilead does not do miracles. It does public punishment and emotional destruction with terrifying efficiency.

Yes, Becka’s mother dies in Episode 9. She is taken away by the Eyes and publicly executed by hanging while commanders observe the punishment. The scene is made even more brutal because it unfolds at the same time Becka is forced into marriage with Garth for her own protection.

It is classic Gilead logic: traumatised teenage girl loses both parents in the span of days, so naturally the solution is an immediate wedding. Somewhere deep inside the writers’ room, somebody clearly decided emotional damage needed maximum efficiency.

The execution scene has also sparked heavy speculation surrounding Kate Hewlett’s future on the series. As of Episode 9, her character’s death strongly suggests her time on The Testaments is over, unless the series later uses flashbacks.

Fans online were quick to praise Hewlett’s performance, especially the quiet heartbreak she brought into the final confrontation with Becka. Many viewers pointed out that her character’s sacrifice became one of the few genuinely selfless acts shown in Gilead so far, which somehow made the outcome even harder to watch.

Across fan discussions, reactions have been intense and divided in the best possible way. Some viewers called the episode the strongest instalment of the season because of its emotional weight and sharp pacing, while others admitted they were furious at how relentlessly cruel the story has become.

Several fans joked that the writers must “personally enjoy ruining everyone’s week” after delivering back-to-back trauma in nearly every scene. Others focused on Becka herself, arguing that her entire arc perfectly exposes the contradictions within Gilead’s system.

The regime encourages blind loyalty until that loyalty threatens powerful men, and Episode 9 tears apart that hypocrisy in full view. There has also been major conversation surrounding Becka’s forced marriage to Garth.

Some viewers believe it may become another dangerous prison disguised as protection, while others think the marriage could eventually open a path for resistance inside Gilead’s upper circles.

Either way, nobody seems convinced Becka is heading toward peace anytime soon. After losing her father, her mother, her freedom, and any sense of emotional safety, the character now carries some of the darkest trauma in the series.

The Testaments has pushed nearly every major character to breaking point. Becka’s storyline especially now feels like the emotional centre of the season, balancing rage, grief, survival, and sacrifice all at once. Whether viewers loved or hated the episode, one thing is certain: people are talking, arguing, and emotionally recovering from it in real time. And honestly, after that ending, who isn’t?
