The nominations for the 44th Hong Kong Film Awards have officially been revealed, and one name that fans expected to see in the Best Actor category was noticeably absent: Patrick Tam. While his 2025 crime drama Fight For Tomorrow picked up multiple nominations, Tam himself did not secure a spot in the fiercely competitive Best Actor lineup, sparking widespread discussion online.

This year’s Hong Kong Film Awards, announced on 10 February, sees 47 films competing across 18 categories, making it one of the most competitive editions in recent years. Crime epic Sons of the Neon Night leads the race with 12 nominations, firmly positioning itself as the awards season heavyweight.

In the Best Film category, Another World, Au Revoir, UFO, Sons of the Neon Night, Back To The Past, and She’s Got No Name will battle it out.

Meanwhile, the Best Director race features Tommy Kai Chung Ng, Lee Chi Chun, Leung Pak Kin, Shu Qi, and Peter Chan — with Shu Qi’s inclusion highlighting her growing influence behind the camera.

The Best Actor category is where the heat truly lies. Louis Koo earned a rare double nomination for Behind the Shadows and Back to the Past, going head-to-head with Louis Cheung, Tony Leung Ka Fai, and Carlos Chan. It’s a stacked lineup, which partly explains just how tight the selection process must have been.

Still, many expected Patrick Tam to be among them.

In Fight For Tomorrow, Patrick Tam portrayed a washed-up triad boss grappling with pride, survival, and shifting loyalties — a layered performance that critics and audiences alike praised for its restraint and emotional depth.

Ahead of the nominations announcement, netizens widely predicted that the 56-year-old veteran actor had a strong chance of clinching a Best Actor nod.

When the official list dropped without his name, disappointment quickly rippled across social media.

Shortly after the announcement, Tam posted the words “heart scorched, spirit cold” on his social media — a phrase that suggests deep discouragement.

The post was later deleted.

When asked about it, he downplayed the interpretation, saying it was unrelated to the awards and simply a personal expression about work matters. He also brushed off speculation, even joking that he didn’t know how happy Locker was.

Interestingly, his Fight For Tomorrow co-star, rising actor Locker Lam Ka-Hei, successfully earned a nomination for Best Supporting Actor. The contrast did not go unnoticed by fans.

Reactions online have been sharply divided. Some fans argue that Tam delivered one of his strongest performances in years and deserved recognition for carrying a complex role with quiet intensity.

Others believe the Best Actor category was simply too competitive this year, noting that with Louis Koo securing two spots alone, the margin for inclusion was razor thin.

Veteran actor Bryant Mak also weighed in, saying that while all nominations were solid, it would have been great to see both Raymond Lam and Patrick Tam included in the Best Actor list.

His comment further fuelled discussion about whether certain performances were overlooked.

Beyond the Best Actor debate, the 44th edition reflects a dynamic and evolving Hong Kong film industry. The Best Actress category features heavyweights Zhang Ziyi, Fala Chen, Ma Li, Natalie Hsu, and Fish Liew.

The supporting categories blend veterans and newer faces, signalling a generational shift that continues to reshape the scene.

For Patrick Tam, whose career spans more than three decades and includes countless memorable roles, missing out on this nomination may sting — but it hardly defines his legacy. Awards recognition is one part of the story; longevity and consistent performance are another.

Now the question is: was this a genuine oversight, or simply the result of an ultra-competitive year? Do you think Patrick Tam should have been nominated for Best Actor, or did the final list get it right?
