Nogizaka46 captain Umezawa Minami announced on 25 February 2026 that she will graduate from the group, confirming that the upcoming 41st single “Saigo ni Kaidan wo Kake Agatta no wa Itsuda?” will mark her final activities as a member. Her graduation concert is set for 21 May 2026, on the last day of Nogizaka46’s 14th YEAR BIRTHDAY LIVE at Tokyo Dome.
The news arrived through her official blog, titled “Everything Looked Beautiful,” where the 3rd Generation ace spoke candidly about her journey, her love for the group, and the decision she has been quietly wrestling with for months.
“I Can Leave While Still Loving Nogizaka”
Reflecting on the recent 4-day live at Ariake Arena, Umezawa wrote that being on stage reminded her just how deeply she loves performing.
“I thought to myself again how much I love the stage. I wanted to keep watching everyone forever,” she shared. “It’s more than just liking… I love them. Every single person in this group moves my heart.”
Then came the announcement fans had both expected and dreaded.
“With the activities of the 41st single, I will graduate from Nogizaka46,” she wrote. “Maybe no one will be surprised anymore. I’ll say it first — this will be long. It may sound selfish, but please allow me today.”
Umezawa revealed she joined the group at 17 and grew up within it. Through leadership changes and generational shifts, she stood at the centre of one of Nogizaka46’s biggest transitional eras. She admitted the decision wasn’t sudden.
“I’ve been thinking about graduation for months. It was not easy,” she confessed. Watching her juniors gain confidence and ambition played a big part in her timing.
“I was so happy to stand beside my beloved同期 and juniors during this turning point. Seeing them grow stronger every day, I felt now is the time.”
Her most striking line?
“I think I can leave the Nogizaka I love, while still loving it.”
That sentence alone says everything.

Speculation quickly followed: would she get a full graduation concert?
Only select senior members in the Sakamichi Series typically receive large-scale send-offs. As the current captain and a central figure since becoming Vice-Captain in 2021 and Captain in February 2023 (succeeding Akimoto Manatsu), expectations were high.
Umezawa Minami confirmed it herself.
“My graduation concert will be held on May 21, the final day of the Birthday Live. It’s more time and space than I deserve, but I want to stand proudly as Nogizaka46 until the very end. Please come see me.”
She added, “Because I am Nogizaka46, I will show you the Nogizaka I believe in, the one I love, on stage.”
In a world where graduation is inevitable — especially within J-pop groups like the Sakamichi Series — her announcement feels both routine and deeply personal.
Members move on to pursue new challenges, modelling, acting, business, or sometimes a completely different life path. But when a captain steps down, it hits differently.
Born 6 January 1999 in Kanagawa, Umezawa Minami joined Nogizaka46’s 3rd Generation on 4 September 2016.
Leadership milestones:
-
29 November 2021 – Appointed Vice-Captain (newly established role)
-
22 February 2023 – Became 3rd Captain of Nogizaka46
Outside group activities, she carved out a strong modelling and acting portfolio. She is an exclusive model for “with” magazine and a regular model for “CLASSY.”
Since April 2024. Her first photobook “Yume no Chikaku” was released in September 2020, followed by her second photobook “Toumei na Kakugo” in February 2026. In recent years, she has also been active on stage and in films, steadily building her individual brand.
Some fans said they had sensed it coming, especially after the recent live performances. Others admitted they were hoping she would stay at least one more year as captain.
Common reactions include:
-
“It’s expected, but I’m not ready.”
-
“She carried the group through a tough era.”
-
“Tokyo Dome is the right stage for her.”
-
“I respect her timing. She leaves when the group is strong.”
There were also discussions about what Nogizaka46 will look like post-Umezawa Minami leadership. Who will become the next captain? Will this signal another major shift for the group?
Umezawa Minami made it clear this wasn’t impulsive.
“It was a very difficult decision,” she wrote. “But I want to keep thinking about everyone, about Nogizaka, until the very last day.”
She thanked staff, seniors, members and fans for their unwavering support, promising to give everything she has left on stage.
Graduations are part of the culture in idol groups, especially in long-running franchises like Nogizaka46. Still, when the captain says goodbye, it feels like the end of a chapter rather than just another member leaving.
The countdown now begins toward 21 May 2026 at Tokyo Dome — one final stage as Captain Umezawa Minami.
What do you think about her graduation timing? Did you see it coming, and who do you believe should take over the captain role next? Let’s talk.
