Zhao Lusi’s star power remains undeniable after the strong performance of Love’s Ambition, but her next drama, Almost Lover (許我耀眼), is now surrounded by growing uncertainty. Industry chatter suggests the drama may be pushed forward from its originally rumoured March 2026 release to as early as January 2026, a move believed to be aimed at riding the lingering popularity wave from her last hit.
However, the earlier broadcast talk has also reignited discussion about whether Zhao Lusi herself will actively promote the drama.
According to Upmedia, sources close to the situation believe she is unlikely to do so if the production is rushed to air in what many are calling a “half-finished” state.
Almost Lover pairs Zhao Lusi with Peng Guan Ying, a combination that initially generated high expectations.

Early on-set photos that surfaced online showcased their natural chemistry, with many viewers charmed by their noticeable height difference and relaxed, youthful energy. At one point, the pairing was widely tipped to become one of the most talked-about screen couples of the year.
The drama was filmed in Hangzhou’s Xianghu area, where Zhao Lusi’s presence reportedly drew extra attention from tourists and fans alike.
Yet behind the scenes, the production soon faced major challenges.
In December 2024, Zhao Lusi was confirmed to be absent from filming due to serious health issues, requiring more than ten days of hospitalisation.
She was later spotted using a wheelchair, sparking concern across fan communities.

Insiders suggest her condition was aggravated by an overwhelming workload, unclear script changes, and long-standing issues with production management. Reports also pointed to limited on-set support, with frequent absences from key creative staff leaving the actress under intense pressure.
Adding to the strain were disputes involving her former agency, including claims related to medical access, account restrictions, and financial responsibilities following production delays.
Originally planned as a 24-episode series, Almost Lover was reportedly cut down to just 14 episodes after Zhao Lusi stepped away from filming.
This revised version has since been submitted for broadcast approval.

Zhao Lusi herself previously hinted at concerns surrounding incomplete productions, noting that when scenes do not flow smoothly, the criticism often lands on the actors rather than the production team.
Adapted from the novel "Liu Yu Wu Yang", the drama unfolds across two timelines, following the leads from their teenage years into adulthood.
The story blends romance with personal growth, using street dance as a central theme. In the adult timeline, the characters reconnect, confront past struggles, and pursue both emotional healing and career fulfilment in a classic double-redemption arc.

Despite the behind-the-scenes turmoil, some industry observers believe Almost Lover still holds viewing value, particularly for its storyline and the early chemistry between the leads.
The bigger question remains whether the final cut can deliver a cohesive and satisfying narrative after losing nearly half its original episode count.
If the drama does air earlier than planned, Zhao Lusi’s absence from promotions may speak louder than any press conference.
Now, fans and casual viewers alike are left wondering: would you still tune in for Almost Lover knowing its complicated journey, or does a troubled production change how you see the final result?
