Taiwan Star Rene Liu, 56, Reveals Her Candid Experience with Late Pregnancy

Taiwanese singer-actress Rene Liu Ruo-ying has always carried an air of calm confidence, but her latest appearance on a Chinese programme gave the public a more intimate look at one of the most important chapters of her life. Now 56, the beloved performer finally opened up in detail about giving birth to her son at 45, revealing a journey filled with determination, vulnerability, and a surprising amount of joy.

Rene, known for timeless hits such as Later and Love You So Much, married Chinese businessman Zhong Xiao Jiang (Zhong Shi) in 2011. For many fans, the news came as a shock at the time, as she had long been seen as the eternally single queen of love songs. Three years later, she announced her pregnancy, and in 2015, she welcomed her son – a moment she now describes as nothing short of a hard-earned miracle.

“It was my last chance – so I tried everything”

When asked about how her pregnancy came about, Rene Liu didn’t sugar-coat the effort behind it.

She shared that the baby was conceived naturally, but only after she had pushed herself through every possible method she could think of.

“I tried everything,” she said frankly.

“Chinese medicine, Western treatments, flying abroad to pray – anything that felt like it might give me even a bit more hope.”

She explained that, at 44, she knew time was not on her side, and the pressure was real.

But once she finally became pregnant, her doctor gave her a piece of advice that completely shifted her mindset: live normally, and avoid searching online.

“He told me not to read too much on the internet. There’s too much information that just scares you, especially at my age. He said as long as I wasn’t doing anything extreme like playing basketball, I’d be fine.”

Looking back, Rene Liu said she truly enjoyed her pregnancy.

She even laughed while recalling that she finally had the perfect excuse to skip dieting.

“I was so happy,” she said.

“At last, I didn’t have to think about dieting. You can gain weight and nobody will complain. I gained 19 kilos in the end.”

Her honesty struck a chord with viewers, many of whom praised her for speaking about late pregnancy with calmness and humour rather than fear.

In recent years, more public figures have chosen to marry and have children later in life.

Critics often point out that not everyone has the same financial resources or medical access.

Still, many viewers expressed admiration for Rene’s courage to share a topic that is often filled with pressure, judgement, and misinformation.

Her grounded, almost playful attitude toward a process that can be incredibly stressful for many women has also earned her a wave of positive comments online.

Born in Taipei in 1969 and trained in music at California State University, Rene Liu has built a celebrated career not only as a singer but also as an actress, director, and songwriter.

With classics like Crazy for Love and The One Who Loves You the Most, she remains one of Taiwan’s most recognisable voices.

Now, as a mother of a 10-year-old, she continues to capture public attention – not through dramatic headlines, but through heartfelt truths and the quiet strength she has always been known for.
