Chinese actor Fan Shiqi has landed himself back in the spotlight after a short clip from his recent livestream went flying across social media. The moment in question started when a viewer asked whether he enjoyed eating “缺牙齒” (que yachi) — a phrase that directly translates to “missing teeth.”

On paper, it sounds harmless. But the wording instantly set off Fan Shiqi, who bristled at the question and visibly lost his patience. For months, the phrase has been dragged into online chatter surrounding the late actor Yu Menglong, making it an especially sensitive trigger among fan circles.

Except… the viewer was actually talking about food.

“缺牙齒” is a popular spicy snack from Hunan, named after its uneven, tooth-like shape.

It’s been trending for weeks, especially among mukbang streamers.

Once Fan Shiqi realised the fan wasn’t hinting at anything else, he immediately apologised.

Still, it was too late.

The clip exploded on Threads and short-video platforms within hours.

The situation quickly tangled itself into long-running online speculation connected to Yu Menglong.

Fan Shiqi Snaps on Livestream After Fan’s Comment

In the past few months, some netizens revisited his older livestreams and claimed his back molars looked “different.”

Screenshots, labelled online as a kind of “report,” also circulated, but these were swiftly questioned due to inconsistent formatting and lack of official verification.

Authorities have never confirmed any of these claims, and none of the circulating documents have been recognised as authentic.

The official conclusion from September remains unchanged:
Yu Menglong passed due to an accidental fall after consuming alcohol, with no criminal involvement.

Three individuals were previously detained for creating and spreading extreme fabrications online.

Why People Turned on Fan Shiqi (Again)

Fan Shiqi’s sharp reaction on the livestream — followed by his quick apology — ended up fuelling more online suspicion rather than extinguishing it.

Two things made the public particularly sensitive:

  • he once posted a sarcastic message shortly after Yu Menglong’s passing, which drew heavy criticism at the time;

  • he reacted extremely fast and defensively to a phrase that was, in this case, purely snack-related.

Netizens wasted no time:

  • “Why’s he panicking over a snack?”

  • “Now he looks even more uneasy.”

  • “He’s giving people reasons to question him.”

The backlash grew louder, even though the misunderstanding was cleared up almost instantly.

As discussions reignited, the “Justice for Yu Menglong” petition has now surpassed 683,000 signatures, with supporters demanding a fresh, independent review of the case.

With that said, authorities continue to stand by their original findings and have not announced any intention to reopen the investigation.

Meanwhile, Fan Shiqi’s team has remained quiet apart from his on-livestream apology, leaving the discussion to play out online — and it’s showing no signs of slowing down.
