Fan Chengcheng’s “I Want to Date!” Shout Takes Over Weibo — The Real Story Behind the Viral Clip

It’s not every day that a top idol publicly screams “I want to date!” in the middle of a busy street — but that’s exactly what Adam Fan (Fan Chengcheng) did, and of course, the internet completely lost it.

On Wednesday, 12 November, a short video of Fan Chengcheng yelling the now-iconic line went viral across Weibo.

In the clip, the singer-actor is seen dressed in a sleek all-black outfit — long coat, dark shades, and all — looking effortlessly cool until the moment he blurts out the line with visible hesitation.

He flashes a shy grin, lifts a tiny portable speaker, and after a deep breath, shouts “I want to date!” before quickly bowing his head and darting off like he just committed a national embarrassment.

Naturally, the surrounding crowd wasted no time whipping out their phones.

Within hours, the clip spread like wildfire online — and netizens were having the time of their lives reacting to it.

Not a random street confession after all

While many initially thought Fan Chengcheng had decided to express his feelings publicly, the truth is a lot funnier (and less dramatic).

According to the Weibo user who first posted the video, the whole thing was actually filmed for Keep Running (奔跑吧) — China’s long-running variety show inspired by Running Man Korea

Apparently, Fan’s spontaneous-sounding outburst was actually part of a punishment mission after losing a game segment.

“Fan Chengcheng shouting ‘I want to date!’ was his penalty for losing,” the user explained.

“He literally took a few seconds to psych himself up before yelling. Poor guy looked like he wanted the ground to swallow him whole!”

Netizens can’t stop laughing

The clip immediately climbed Weibo’s trending charts, sparking a wave of hilarious fan comments.

One user joked,

“This is pure gold! Chengcheng looks so scared of being recorded — bet he’s messaging people right now asking them to delete it.”

Another teased,

“Even if everyone says you’ve had countless girlfriends, I’ll still agree with everyone.”

And one more added,

“When a kid says ‘I want to go to the toilet,’ it usually means they already did — same energy here.”

The general consensus? Fans found the moment equal parts adorable, awkward, and iconic — classic Fan Chengcheng behaviour.

Timing couldn’t be more ironic

Interestingly, the viral shout came not long after a fresh round of rumours surrounding Fan Chengcheng’s love life.

Back in August 2024, another video made the rounds online — showing him at dinner with a group of friends, including a woman who seemed a bit too comfortable with him.

In the short clip, she playfully pinched his cheek while he gently fixed her hair — and naturally, that was all it took for netizens to start connecting dots.

Fan’s studio later stepped in with a clarification, explaining that it was just a friendly meal and not a date.

Still, since Fan himself didn’t personally address it, the rumour lingered quietly in fan circles — making this week’s “I want to date” shout feel like perfect meme timing.

A “punishment” that boosted his charm

For fans who’ve followed Keep Running, this isn’t exactly out of character for Fan Chengcheng.

He’s been a recurring cast member since the show’s eighth season, and his playful, slightly chaotic energy often lands him in these kinds of hilarious “punishment” moments.

Whether it’s jumping into cold water, singing in public, or now, yelling fake confessions on the street, Fan Chengcheng’s good sport attitude has made him one of the show’s most loved members.

And honestly? Even when he’s clearly embarrassed, he still manages to come across effortlessly endearing.

That shy laugh and quick getaway after shouting just made fans fall harder for his down-to-earth side.

TL;DR

  • What happened: Fan Chengcheng yelled “I want to date!” in public — it went viral on Weibo.

  • The truth: It was a Keep Running punishment, not a real-life confession.

  • Netizens’ take: Equal parts chaotic, cute, and hilarious.

  • Bonus irony: It dropped right after dating rumours resurfaced.

  • Result: Chengcheng once again proves why fans adore his natural, unfiltered personality.
