‘Abyss Dweller’: Republican-Era Espionage Series Starring Huang Xiaoming Launches June 9

Chinese actor Huang Xiaoming makes a formidable return to the Republican-era espionage genre with the launch of ‘Abyss Dweller’ (潜渊), a high-budget spy drama slated for primetime release on 9 June 2025, airing via Hunan TV, Mango TV, and Tencent Video.

Blending political tension with psychological intrigue, the series explores the blurred lines of loyalty and identity in wartime Shanghai. With a compelling narrative helmed by artistic director Mao Weining (The Battle at Lake Changjin) and director Wang Yiwei, the production has already drawn attention for its layered characters, sweeping visuals, and morally complex plot.

A Three-Faced Spy at the Heart of the Storm

Set in the early 1940s during the height of Japanese occupation, ‘Abyss Dweller’ follows Liang Shuo, portrayed by Huang Xiaoming, a military intelligence agent who wakes with no memory of who he truly is. Thrust into a fractured Shanghai teeming with underground movements and foreign operatives, Liang is soon caught in a web of secrets, betrayal, and conflicting loyalties.

As his past begins to resurface, Liang assumes a triple identity—simultaneously operating within the Nationalist regime, the Japanese occupation forces, and the underground resistance. Each role demands a different face, and each decision edges him closer to either salvation or catastrophe.

Yet while Liang fights his internal battles, a graver crisis looms: a mass execution of prisoners—primarily refugees and forced labourers—is planned to coincide with an upcoming peace conference. When the only agent with the intel to stop it disappears, the clock begins to tick on one of the show's most high-stakes missions.

Leading Cast and Production Credentials

Chinese Spy Drama ‘Abyss Dweller’ Launches with Huang Xiaoming in Leading Role

The cast is anchored by Huang Xiaoming, no stranger to the genre following standout roles in The Infiltrator and The Message. Opposite him is Zhang Jianing, playing Xie Nianzi, a bold, quick-thinking operative whose personal mission becomes intertwined with Liang's shifting allegiances.

Supporting roles include Yu Jinwei, Jian Renzi, Ai Xiaoqi, Li Qiang, and Yu Yang, each playing key figures within the political factions at play.

Their complex dynamics—built on mistrust, strategy, and buried trauma—add further depth to the show’s emotional and political landscape.

A New Chapter in Chinese Spy Thrillers?

With its rich historical setting and sharp character work, ‘Abyss Dweller’ is expected to stand alongside recent espionage successes like The Rebel and Cliff Walkers. Industry insiders also point to the show's cinematic styling and nuanced pacing as potential game-changers for television spy thrillers.

Backed by strong pre-broadcast buzz, ‘Abyss Dweller’ marks not only a major return for Huang Xiaoming to the small screen, but also a continuation of China’s evolving approach to storytelling within Republican-era drama.
