Chen Derong Responds to Rumours of Refusing Mother Roles in Acting

Chen Derong Responds to Edited Interview and Role Rumours

Taiwanese actress Chen Derong has had it up to here with people twisting her words – and she’s not staying quiet about it.

On 24 April, the beloved actress took to social media to clap back at online rumours claiming she refuses to play a mother on screen.

The post, both fierce and heartfelt, was aimed at so-called "marketing accounts" who, she says, are making up drama just to chase views and stir the pot.

“What year are we even in?” she wrote.

“There are still accounts inventing lies just to get traffic, causing unnecessary trouble for others. What really makes me angry and disheartened is: why are people still obsessed with this boring question about whether or not an actress will play a mum?”

To set the record straight, Chen reminded everyone that she’s been playing mother roles since way back in 2003, when she was just 29.

“People who know me and my fans already know – I played a mother in True Love Forever, and since then, I’ve taken on similar roles in The Way of the World, Marry You Again in My Next Life, and The Forest in the Mountains.”

Her message? Stop the nonsense.

“I never responded before because I didn’t feel the need to prove myself. But now, please stop with the baseless rumours. I hope everyone opens their eyes and sees these marketing accounts for what they are – don’t let fake news lead you by the nose.”

This all comes after an old interview clip went viral, where Chen was joking about not wanting to play a mum or a gran.

In the snippet, she said: “To be honest, sorry, I wouldn’t want to play someone’s mum. If I’m looking this good, and you ask me to play the mother of a grown-up? Sorry – absolutely not. That would be a massive insult.”

Cue netizens going wild – and completely missing the joke.

In a follow-up, Chen clarified that the clip had been edited to remove the full context: “They only kept the bit where I was joking. The parts before and after were cut out. I never said I wanted to play a teenage girl or anything like that. It’s all been twisted.”

Born on 1 May 1974, Chen Derong rose to fame in the ‘90s through hit dramas like Plum Blossom Brand: The Curse of the Plum and Dream of Curtain.

Known for her elegant looks and timeless presence, she’s one of the few actresses who’s managed to stay relevant across generations.

But clearly, even seasoned stars aren’t safe from the ageist lens of internet gossip.

As Chen put it herself: “I’ve played mums. I’ve played women with depth. The work speaks for itself.”

And honestly, it’s about time the clickbait brigade sat down.
