SNH48's Li Yitong: Only Ju Jingyi Truly Made It Big

SNH48 has thrived on China’s idol culture, but even for its top members, mainstream success remains elusive.
Li Yitong, who won SNH48’s general election twice, recently opened up about the group's struggles.
At 29, she acknowledges the harsh reality of post-idol life, admitting that only one member has truly broken through.

"Among all the SNH48 election winners, only Ju Jingyi (aka Kiku) has really made it big," Li Yitong said, reflecting on how tough the industry is.
Despite the group’s massive fanbase, transitioning into mainstream entertainment is a different game.
She believes idols trained overseas often have an advantage compared to those who went through China’s local system.
Now set to appear on Ride the Wind 2025, Li Yitong is realistic about her chances.
"After all these years of not being popular? I don't think so," she admitted. Still, she hopes people will see how much she has grown and improved.
Ju Jingyi’s Success and SNH48's Challenges
Ju Jingyi, known for her roles in Legend of Yunxi and In Blossom, remains the only former SNH48 member to achieve lasting fame.
While others have pursued acting or solo careers, few have managed to gain the same level of recognition.
SNH48, the Chinese version of Japan’s AKB48, is famous for its massive membership and fan-driven system.
With over 200 members across its sister groups, the group follows a theatre-based format where fans elect "centres" who get the most exposure.
But despite this model, breaking out of the idol bubble has proven difficult for most members.
Li Yitong's honesty sheds light on the struggles many idols face. While she remains hopeful, it’s clear that post-SNH48 success is far from guaranteed.
