| Under Siege Episode 2 Recap and Review. |
The countdown to Colombia's infamous Palace of Justice siege begins to take shape in Under Siege Season 1 Episode 2, as M-19 prepares an ambitious operation while the government struggles to maintain control of an increasingly tense political situation. Set against the backdrop of Colombia's turbulent history, the episode moves between political negotiations, personal struggles and competing agendas, gradually revealing how several seemingly unrelated events will collide on 6 November 1985.
The story initially takes us two months before the siege. Memo, a member of the socialist revolutionary movement M-19, begins surveying the Palace of Justice while pretending to enjoy a romantic date with his girlfriend, Mona. It is certainly an unusual choice for a date, considering that most people would probably prefer dinner and a film rather than secretly inspecting a government building. However, Mona eventually discovers what is happening and becomes inspired by his commitment to the movement. She decides to join M-19 herself.
Meanwhile, life inside the Palace appears considerably more ordinary. Kitchen employees Jimmy Beltrán, Rosita and David share a close friendship, spending their working days together while dealing with their own personal responsibilities. Rosita is pregnant, while Jimmy is trying to keep his family finances under control. None of them seems particularly aware that their workplace is gradually becoming the centre of a much bigger political confrontation.
Upstairs, the Supreme Court magistrates are discussing an issue that could have serious consequences for Colombia's political future: whether members of the Medellín Cartel, particularly Pablo Escobar, should be extradited to the United States to face trial. Supreme Court President Alfonso Reyes Echandía supports extradition and makes his position clear during the discussion with fellow magistrates Carlos, Jaime and Manuel.
Their meeting attracts the attention of Olga, a television news presenter who arrives hoping to question Manuel about the proceedings. However, he carefully avoids making any controversial statements, choosing diplomatic answers instead. Apparently, even a straightforward interview can become a complicated exercise when politics is involved.
Elsewhere, tensions are growing within M-19. At the movement's headquarters, Fayad, Memo, Otero and Lázaro discuss the risks surrounding their proposed operation. Their disagreement comes against the background of an increasingly hostile relationship with the Colombian military. M-19 has openly questioned the armed forces' influence over the country, prompting a military response that resulted in attacks on the movement and the arrest of several members.
Now, the revolutionaries want to retaliate. Their plan is to seize control of the Palace of Justice and pressure Alfonso into putting President Betancur on trial. They also want the government to acknowledge its failures and take responsibility for the country's political situation.
However, their plans are developing without the government's knowledge of what is coming. President Betancur and Defence Minister General Miguel Vega Uribe hold a press conference, publicly claiming that peace negotiations with M-19 are still taking place. When journalists question them about violations of the ceasefire agreement, the officials insist that M-19 was responsible for attacking first.
The public explanation does little to hide the growing uncertainty behind the scenes.
Away from the political discussions, Jimmy returns home to his wife, Pilar, and their three children. Unfortunately, family life comes with a rather unpleasant financial reality. He is dealing with substantial debt and hopes to clear it by December so that the family can finally start putting some money aside.
There is also the matter of his children's school fees. Jimmy needs to approach his employer and request an advance on his salary, hoping to cover the payments without making his already difficult financial situation worse. It is a relatable problem, although his workplace is about to become considerably more dangerous than an ordinary office.
The Palace also finds itself under pressure from an entirely different direction. Members of the Medellín Cartel begin threatening and monitoring the magistrates, hoping to influence the Court into removing the extradition treaty. Their demands are clear, but Alfonso refuses to give in.
Recognising the seriousness of the situation, he asks Major Víctor Delgado Mallarino to strengthen security around the Palace. Unfortunately, Mallarino does not appear particularly concerned. His relaxed response is difficult to understand, especially when the threats are becoming increasingly direct.
Inside M-19, disagreements continue over how the operation should be carried out. Lázaro and Fayad clash because Lázaro wants every member properly armed and insists on having a clear escape strategy. Fayad, however, remains convinced that the operation will simply involve taking control of the building and negotiating with the government.
His confidence is almost impressive, although perhaps not entirely sensible given the circumstances.
To strengthen their negotiating position, M-19 also plans to take two important hostages: Jaime Betancur, the president's brother, and Clara de Castro, the wife of the Secretary of State. Their involvement is intended to put additional pressure on the government and make it harder for officials to ignore their demands.
Three weeks before the siege, the situation takes another turn when the Army discovers M-19's headquarters and launches an attack. The revolutionaries manage to escape, but their activities become public knowledge, bringing the entire operation into the spotlight.
The news shocks Alfonso and his son, Yesid. The Court had previously approved an amnesty that helped secure the release of M-19 prisoners following the military's violation of the ceasefire. Now, the possibility of another confrontation threatens to undermine those efforts.
Yesid, who works as a criminal lawyer, is particularly worried about his father's safety. He suggests that Alfonso leave Colombia and seek refuge in France until the situation settles down. However, Alfonso refuses to abandon his responsibilities or run away from the challenges facing the Court.
Pilar has similar concerns about Jimmy. She wants him to leave his job at the Palace, especially after learning about the growing security threats. Jimmy, however, believes the building is still the safest place for him. Considering everything that is happening, his confidence is rather misplaced, but he remains determined to continue working.
Surprisingly, M-19's leadership has no intention of cancelling the operation despite the military discovering its headquarters. Instead, the members believe that the authorities will be less prepared because they now assume the original plan has been exposed.
To distract the military and redirect its attention, M-19 launches an attack against General Rafael Samudio. The incident creates further tension within the government, with General Uribe arguing that the movement must be crushed through military force.
President Betancur takes a different position. He continues to believe that a peaceful solution remains possible and attempts to establish contact with M-19's leadership. Unfortunately, the two sides appear to be moving further apart rather than closer to an agreement.
Yesid also learns about the attack and warns Major Mallarino that the Court could be in danger. Yet the major continues to underestimate the possibility of an assault on the Palace. At this point, his repeated dismissal of security concerns is becoming one of the most frustrating parts of the episode.
The day before the planned operation finally arrives. While M-19 celebrates its preparations, Memo notices that Mona remains worried about what is about to happen. He reassures her that they have no intention of harming civilians. His promise offers her some comfort, although the scale of the operation makes it difficult to know how events will unfold once everything begins.
Then comes 6 November 1985, the day that will change everything.
Pilar wants Jimmy to stay home rather than report for work, but he reminds her that he has an important meeting to attend. His financial responsibilities and professional commitments continue to take priority, even though the Palace is facing an increasingly serious threat.
Alfonso, meanwhile, offers to drive Yesid to university. His son is still sleepy and tells him to leave without waiting, insisting that he does not want his father to arrive late at work. It is an ordinary family exchange, but the episode uses the moment to underline how little either man understands about what is about to happen.
Once Alfonso reaches the Palace, he discovers that the newly assigned security personnel have failed to arrive because of a clerical error. He immediately alerts a major about the problem, adding another worrying detail to an already questionable security arrangement.
Inside the building, the Court finally prepares to vote on the extradition treaty. The decision carries enormous political importance, particularly given the pressure from the Medellín Cartel and the continuing threats against the magistrates.
M-19 also encounters an unexpected problem. A communication error means Lázaro misses the signal instructing him to move towards the Palace. This is particularly concerning because he is supposed to lead the assault team. With the operation already underway, even a small breakdown in communication could create serious complications.
Alfonso is preparing to leave the building when a woman approaches him requesting a consultation. At almost the same time, Pilar calls Jimmy to ask about the money they have been discussing. Their conversation is another reminder that ordinary life continues even as the situation around them approaches a breaking point.
However, the quiet atmosphere inside the Palace does not last much longer.
Otero reaches the building first with his squad. They enter through the parking area and take down the guards stationed there. The sound of gunfire immediately alerts the people inside that something is seriously wrong.
Memo and his fellow M-19 member, Irma, then move towards the ground floor to begin their part of the operation.
The episode ends as the planned takeover becomes a reality, leaving the Palace of Justice facing the beginning of a major confrontation. What initially appeared to be a political negotiation has now turned into something far more dangerous, and the people working inside the building are suddenly caught in the middle.
Review and opinion
Episode 2 is at its best when it shows how a political crisis grows out of ordinary routines. Jimmy worries about school fees, Rosita prepares for a baby, and Alfonso tries to protect the Court while colleagues debate a decision with international consequences. Those details give the looming siege a human scale, rather than turning the episode into a history lesson.
The shifting timelines build tension effectively, although the names, titles and competing agendas can make the first half feel crowded. Fayad’s confidence that the takeover will amount to a tidy negotiation is revealing; planning a high-risk operation around wishful thinking is hardly reassuring. The episode occasionally explains its political context more than necessary, but the performances and mounting sense of inevitability keep it moving. By the final minutes, the danger feels immediate, and the arrival at the Palace is gripping for viewers at home.
Overall, Under Siege Season 1 Episode 2 delivers an engaging build-up to one of Colombia's most significant historical events. Rather than rushing straight into the action, it takes time to establish the political motivations, personal relationships and questionable decisions that bring the characters to this moment. The final sequence also provides a compelling reason to continue watching, particularly for viewers interested in historical dramas inspired by real events.
