| S.W.A.T Exiles Episode 4 Recap & Review. |
SWAT Exiles Season 1 Episode 4 puts Hondo in an increasingly awkward position: he has been handed a new S.W.A.T. team that barely listens to him, a case involving a murdered Korean drug dealer, and a superior who seems almost determined to watch him fail. As the investigation exposes a hidden player behind the violence, Hondo also discovers that the biggest problem may not be the criminals at all. His own team is already keeping secrets.
The episode opens with a sharply dressed biker arriving at a club before shooting Kim Ji-ho, a Korean drug dealer. His guards scramble to protect Ji-ho’s son while the club empties in seconds. It is an efficient introduction to the episode’s central mystery, although the biker gear does make the whole thing feel like someone wandered into the wrong action film and refused to leave.
Hondo, meanwhile, is trying to work out exactly what he has inherited. He interviews the new recruits about why they joined S.W.A.T., then watches them train. The problem becomes obvious almost immediately: they have plenty of confidence but very little discipline. They ignore instructions, make questionable decisions and seem determined to improvise whenever following orders would be considerably easier.
Ethan is dealing with a brain injury that affects how he processes social cues, adding another layer to his difficulties within the group. Hondo notices that the recruits are not simply inexperienced; they are struggling to function as a unit. Malik, for example, hesitates when he is expected to take a shot, forcing Hondo to remind him what is at stake.
Things get worse when Hondo learns that Commander Meyers has been replaced by Angela Pike. He tells Pike bluntly that the team is nowhere near ready, but she has no interest in hearing excuses. She tells him to stop living in the shadow of S.W.A.T.’s glory days and adapt to the current programme. In other words, Hondo has been handed a broken machine and told to make it work.
Pike gives him the Ji-ho case, and the evidence quickly suggests that his murder could trigger a wider gang conflict. Ji-ho had reportedly made an arrangement with his rival, Monte, to keep guns away from the streets. The killing therefore raises an obvious question: did Monte break the agreement, or is somebody deliberately trying to make it look that way?
Hondo takes his team to Monte’s textile warehouse, hoping to find weapons and answers. Before the operation, he holds an informal audition for the scout position, eventually choosing Jude. The rest of the team is hardly thrilled by the decision, and their doubts are not exactly misplaced. During the operation, Jude makes a serious error and nearly shoots Cassidy.
The team then misses a door and fails to spot Monte and his son until the pair effectively introduce themselves. It is hardly the sort of tactical precision Hondo had in mind. Monte denies ordering Ji-ho’s murder, while his son insists they have nothing to do with the killing. More importantly, the warehouse contains no guns, leaving Hondo with a team that has managed to create plenty of problems without producing much evidence.
Monte is still worried that Ji-ho’s people will blame him, so he persuades his lawyer son to help obtain weapons for protection. At the same time, Ethan breaks protocol by hacking into Monte’s network. He discovers a shipment scheduled for the following day, but the weight listed does not add up. Ethan suspects the missing weight represents guns.
Hondo is furious that Ethan hacked the system without waiting for a warrant. Yet the information is too useful to ignore, so the team heads to the delivery location. This time, Samantha takes the lead, but she freezes briefly when the operation begins. The resulting confrontation leaves six people dead, while Malik risks himself to save Monte.
The violence also gives Hondo the breakthrough he needs. The attackers are not Ji-ho’s men. Someone else is moving against Monte, meaning the case is not simply a revenge operation between two established rivals. There is a new and unidentified player manipulating the situation from the shadows.
Hondo's problems with his own team are far from finished. He discovers that Samantha went around him to secure new guns for the unit in exchange for promoting them on her social media. She also refuses to admit that her mistake contributed to the operation going wrong. Hondo finally loses patience and confronts the entire team, telling them that he has read their files and questioning whether they are capable of becoming S.W.A.T. officers.
Pike then makes the situation even more uncomfortable. She warns Hondo that if he cannot bring the recruits under control, his time with the unit is finished. When Hondo wants to investigate Ji-ho’s son, Pike tells him to leave that part of the case to another team. Naturally, Hondo does exactly what any obedient officer would do: he ignores her and calls an old friend who now works as a private investigator.
Away from the investigation, Ethan invites the team to his home, where they discover that he is surprisingly wealthy. Jude turns up late and reveals that he has stolen their personnel files from Hondo’s office. The recruits begin daring each other to read what is inside, although most are understandably reluctant to find out what their employers really think of them.
Jude's file is particularly strange because large sections have been heavily redacted. That mystery becomes more interesting when Jude admits he wants to know whether the department blamed him for a failed undercover operation. He never gets the answer he wants because the most useful information has conveniently disappeared beneath a wall of black ink.
Malik then receives a message and leaves, saying he needs to look after his child. Instead, he meets the anonymous woman who has been working against Hondo. She shows him reports from the previous operations and claims Hondo left something out of his official account. Malik confirms that Hondo did not tell the whole story, quietly creating another problem for his new commander.
Back at Ethan’s house, only Sammy and Jude remain with him. Jude tries to enter a locked room, immediately sending Ethan into panic mode. The reaction is suspicious enough to suggest that Ethan has something he desperately does not want the others to find, although the episode wisely leaves that mystery hanging.
Hondo finally meets June, Ji-ho’s son, thanks to the private investigator. June denies ordering any attack against Monte. When Hondo asks about Ji-ho’s final word, June explains that his father said “son” in Korean. June assumed his father was simply calling for him, but Hondo hears something different in the clue.
That single detail changes the investigation. Hondo realises that Monte’s son, Andre, is the person behind the attack. He contacts Malik and orders the team to prepare for an arrest. They eventually locate Andre at the hospital, where Monte is recovering from his injuries.
Andre takes his own father hostage when the team closes in. He blames Monte for failing to adapt and argues that his father is stuck in the past. The accusation lands differently for Hondo because Pike has essentially said something similar to him earlier in the episode: adapt or get left behind.
Malik attempts to talk Andre down while Jude searches for an opening. When Jude finally gets a clear shot, Malik has to make the decision. Despite his hesitation, he orders Jude to take it, bringing the standoff to an end.
Afterwards, Hondo praises Malik’s leadership and tells him that he has finally found someone he can trust to lead the group. There is just one rather large problem: Malik has already betrayed that trust by secretly working with Hondo’s enemy. Hondo, unaware of the betrayal, formally appoints him as the team scout.
The decision adds a nice layer of irony to the episode. Hondo believes he has identified the recruit who can stabilise the team, while viewers know that Malik is already hiding something from him. The appointment therefore feels less like a victory and more like Hondo accidentally handing someone a key to the room where all his problems are stored.
Sammy later asks Jude for advice after freezing during the mission. Jude explains that Malik is also a soldier and admits that he has been trying to get on his good side. He also explains why he stole the files, revealing that he wanted to know whether the department considered him responsible for the botched undercover operation. With his file heavily redacted, however, Jude is left with exactly the kind of answer that explains absolutely nothing.
The episode closes on another worrying development. Hondo’s private investigator calls with information about Angela Pike, suggesting that she may have been connected to the committee involved in getting Hondo fired. Hondo follows Pike as she leaves the office, signalling that his attention has now shifted from the criminals he is supposed to investigate to the people inside the department who may have helped bring him down.
My take on SWAT Exiles Season 1 Episode 4 is that this works best when it treats Hondo’s new assignment as a problem of trust rather than simply another weekly case. The murder investigation is solid, but the more interesting material is happening inside the team. Nobody seems completely honest, several recruits are carrying baggage, and Hondo is trying to impose discipline on people who appear allergic to the concept.
Malik’s secret cooperation with the mysterious woman is particularly effective because Hondo rewards him just as the audience learns how compromised he may be. That is a delicious bit of dramatic irony. Jude’s redacted file and Ethan’s locked room also give the episode enough unanswered questions to keep the wider story moving without throwing ten mysteries at the screen at once.
The biggest weakness is that some of the recruits still feel deliberately chaotic rather than fully developed, but that could change as their individual histories come into focus. Overall, Episode 4 is a stronger character episode than a straight procedural, and the Pike mystery gives it a promising final turn.
The SWAT Exiles Episode 4 ending leaves Hondo facing a much bigger problem than Andre’s arrest. He may have finally found a recruit he trusts, but Malik is already hiding his connection to the woman investigating him. Meanwhile, Pike could have a personal connection to Hondo’s downfall. With Jude’s mysterious file and Ethan’s suspicious locked room still unresolved, there is plenty left to untangle. What do you make of Malik’s betrayal, and do you think Pike is actually connected to Hondo’s firing?
