Korean Drama Between Steps Season 1 Episode 3 Recap.

Episode 3 of Between Steps turns an ordinary meeting between two strangers into a messy chain of secrets, accusations and uncomfortable university politics. Min-jae and Yoo-jin barely know each other when they cross paths on public transport, but by the end of the episode they are working together to uncover what happened during a restaurant incident involving Yoo-jin’s friend Su-bin and professor Young-soo.

The episode opens with Park Min-jae undergoing an MRI, and the scene immediately explains why he has such a strange urgency about life. He has been in remission for 10 years and uses a prosthetic right leg, but he refuses to think of his health as permanently settled. His doctor tells him the scans are clear, yet Min-jae remains convinced that the illness could return at any time.

That fear follows him back to university. His friends have barely touched their project, Danny, and Min-jae is clearly running out of patience. When Tae-ho points out that he has been fine for a decade, Min-jae pushes back, arguing that being in remission is not the same as having nothing to worry about. His friends, reasonably enough, remind him that they also have lives outside their project. Their solution? Make a bucket list. Because apparently university deadlines were not stressful enough already.

On the train, Min-jae has a much more pleasant encounter. A woman beside him, Im Yoo-jin, falls asleep against his shoulder. He eventually nods off too, and the pair wake up just in time to scramble off at the same stop. Yoo-jin then takes an unfortunate tumble, and Min-jae helps her by breaking the heels of her shoes so she can walk. It is an oddly practical introduction to a potential romance, although neither of them seems particularly interested in admitting that yet.

They end up on the same bus, but Yoo-jin later realises she still has Min-jae's handkerchief. She heads to university, where another problem awaits. Professor Kang wants to discuss her future and encourages Yoo-jin to apply for graduate school. Yoo-jin doubts herself because she has not won any design competitions, but Kang insists that persistence matters more than trophies and hints that she is looking for someone capable of eventually succeeding her.

Kang also asks Yoo-jin to assist with an interview for Lady Sense. The professor is photographed surrounded by knitted hats intended for charity, but the session goes sideways when the reporter asks her to move because her face would fall into the magazine's fold. Kang takes this as a personal offence and refuses. It is a wonderfully petty little moment that says plenty about her personality.

Meanwhile, Min-jae decides his friends need to take their project seriously because he believes he may not have unlimited time. They argue that he has already been healthy for 10 years, while he insists that there is no guarantee the future will behave itself. Eventually, the conversation turns into the bucket list idea, and Min-jae writes down experiences he wants to have, including travel and dating.

He then contacts Seo-hyun, an old school friend, and arranges dinner. Before meeting her, he buys roses from a flower shop. Yoo-jin and her friend Su-bin happen to walk in as he leaves, with Su-bin speaking on the phone to Young-soo and calling him “oppa”, which immediately catches Yoo-jin's attention.

The dinner itself takes an unexpected turn. Seo-hyun arrives with her marketing manager, Nam Yoon-soo, and the pair spend some time inspecting the restaurant's robot servers before joining Min-jae. It becomes clear that Seo-hyun and Min-jae knew each other in high school, although Min-jae went to university several years after her.

Elsewhere in the same restaurant, the fashion and textiles department is celebrating Teacher's Appreciation Day. Young-soo is congratulated for securing an assistant professor position at Nagoya University, while Su-bin attempts to push him and Yoo-jin towards a better relationship. It goes nowhere. Young-soo remains cold towards Yoo-jin while behaving much more suggestively towards Su-bin, including touching her leg beneath the table.

At Min-jae's table, Seo-hyun reveals that there is something happening between her and Yoon-soo. She asks Min-jae what he thinks, and he simply tells her that if she likes Yoon-soo, she should date him. Seo-hyun then leaves to bring her car around, leaving Min-jae alone with his thoughts.

The two stories eventually collide. Young-soo asks Su-bin to have another drink after the dinner, and shortly afterwards Su-bin's scream sends everyone into chaos. Yoo-jin follows the sound and finds Young-soo in a room with Su-bin, eventually dragging him outside. Min-jae witnesses the commotion and calls the police.

At the police station, Yoo-jin tells the detective that she saw Young-soo forcing a kiss on Su-bin. She also says Min-jae witnessed what happened. Min-jae, however, explains that the incident had already ended by the time he arrived, meaning he cannot confirm what Yoo-jin says she saw.

That answer infuriates Yoo-jin. She believes Min-jae should have done more to support Su-bin, while he refuses to claim something he did not personally witness. Yoo-jin then remembers that Min-jae had been photographing the restaurant's robot server and asks to see the images in case they contain useful evidence. He refuses, making the situation even more frustrating.

Yoo-jin stays with Su-bin overnight, while Min-jae returns home and finally reveals why he was so reluctant to hand over his phone. His gallery is packed with photographs of Seo-hyun. Rather than explain himself, he deletes them all.

The following day brings an even bigger shock. Professor Kang visits Young-soo in hospital and physically confronts him. Yoo-jin, meanwhile, tries to check on Su-bin but gets no response. Then Kang summons her and tells her something she never expected to hear: she wants Yoo-jin to apologise to Young-soo.

According to Kang, Su-bin has told her that she was dating Young-soo and had deliberately kept the relationship from Yoo-jin because the two women did not get along over him. Yoo-jin refuses to apologise because she believes she acted after witnessing something wrong. Kang responds by telling her that she will no longer be considered Kang's student.

It leaves Yoo-jin devastated. She later wanders through an art gallery and tells a stranger that she does not believe she has enough talent to create worthwhile designs. Her confidence, already shaky, is now taking another serious hit.

Then Min-jae calls with a possible solution. With help from Seo-hyun and Yoon-soo, he and Yoo-jin manage to access the restaurant robot's audio recordings from the night of the incident. For a moment, it looks as though the machine might provide the evidence they need. Unfortunately, the recording contains nothing useful.

While waiting for a bus afterwards, Min-jae and Yoo-jin discuss Su-bin's secrecy and what it might mean. Yoo-jin also learns that Min-jae is studying for a PhD in robotics and asks why he chose the field.

His answer is unexpectedly simple. He says it goes back to Slam Dunk, the manga about basketball. The explanation catches Yoo-jin off guard, and perhaps says more about Min-jae than a grand speech ever could. The bus arrives, Yoo-jin gets on, and Min-jae is left standing behind as she disappears down the road.

My take on Episode 3 is that Between Steps is getting more interesting precisely because it refuses to make its characters straightforward. Min-jae's fear about his health explains his obsession with ticking things off his bucket list, but his habit of hiding things makes him difficult to trust. Yoo-jin, meanwhile, is sympathetic without always being right, and her clash with Kang gives the story a much-needed professional edge.

The restaurant incident is the real turning point, though, because everyone seems to know part of the truth while nobody has the complete picture. Even the robot gets dragged into the investigation and still manages to be useless. That feels almost painfully realistic. The episode also does a nice job building Min-jae and Yoo-jin's relationship without rushing it into romance. They argue, help each other and irritate each other, which is far more convincing than instant chemistry. What did you make of Yoo-jin's decision to stand by Su-bin, and do you trust Min-jae's intentions after seeing those deleted photos?
