| Mechel Goessens: Where Is The Arena Contestant Now? Her MMA Career After Netflix. |
Mechel Goessens’ run on Netflix’s The Arena may have ended just short of the final fight, but the Belgian MMA fighter has hardly disappeared from the cage. After reaching the semi-finals of the competition, Goessens returned to the sport with an already established career, continuing to compete, represent Belgium and build her life around the gym she runs with her husband and coach, Ludo Boulvin.
Her The Arena journey was one of the more convincing examples of a contestant steadily finding her footing rather than arriving with all the answers. Among the 38 fighters competing for two €100,000 professional MMA contracts, Goessens initially avoided the elimination fights and had time to settle into the show's demanding format. Once she was forced into an elimination bout, however, she showed exactly why she had made it that far.
Goessens faced Margaux Longhino after the opening challenges and came through the fight with a win. The result gave her another opportunity to establish herself inside the competition, and she later joined Cédric Doumbé’s team. Her technical ability and attitude earned Doumbé's respect, while her story outside the arena added another layer to her appearance on the series.
At home, Goessens had something many competitors would probably consider a rather useful advantage: her husband was also her coach. Ludo Boulvin had been central to her development as a fighter, helping her turn a growing interest in MMA into a serious sporting career. Goessens had previously worked as a consultant, but she eventually realised that the corporate routine was not giving her the direction she wanted. Apparently, sitting behind a desk was not quite enough adrenaline.
Her ambitions became clearer as The Arena progressed. By episode seven, she was facing Jade Henry, with Goessens believing her height could work in her favour. She did not need to rely on that advantage alone. Her movement, technique and determination helped her secure the fastest submission of the matchup, sending her into the semi-finals and giving her the unusual privilege of choosing her next opponent.
Goessens eventually selected Kheira Belal, reasoning that Belal's comparatively limited MMA experience could give her an opening. It was a sensible calculation, but combat sports have a habit of making sensible calculations look rather optimistic. During the fight, Goessens made a small mistake by allowing her opponent's hands to go, and Belal capitalised. That moment ended Goessens' run and kept her from reaching the final stages of the competition.
Still, finishing as a semi-finalist on The Arena was hardly the end of her MMA story. Away from Netflix, Goessens has continued developing her career in the flyweight division, with nine wins and five defeats recorded in her professional record at the time of the information available here.
Her competitive record is backed by several significant achievements. Goessens won bronze at the IMMAF European Championship in both 2025 and 2026, representing the Belgian National Team. Her involvement with Fight Off in October 2025 also formed part of her development, while she later became the first Belgian woman to represent her country at the 2026 IMMAF European Championships in the senior flyweight category.
By February 2026, Goessens was still discussing the psychological side of competition, including what goes through her mind before entering the cage. Her career was not simply about throwing punches and hoping for the best; the preparation, nerves and discipline behind each appearance had become a major part of her story.
That continued in September 2026, when Goessens represented Belgium against Italy's Sara Alivernini at the Clash of Nations Tournament on September 26. She won the bout, giving her another positive result after her Netflix appearance. Around the same period, her personal and sporting life also featured in the documentary MMA, L'amour Est Dans La Cage, while she spoke about her preparation and training in an interview with RTL Sports.
So, where is Mechel Goessens now? She remains firmly involved in MMA, balancing competition with her work around the gym she manages alongside Boulvin. Her career has moved well beyond the reality-TV spotlight, and the show now looks more like one chapter in a much longer sporting journey rather than the defining point of it.
There is also a surprisingly warm domestic side to Goessens' life. Boulvin is not only her husband but also her coach, meaning the pair spend a considerable amount of time training, planning and working together. That arrangement could sound exhausting to most couples, but it appears to suit them. Goessens has repeatedly credited his support and experience for helping her develop as a fighter.
The couple also spend time away from training with Boulvin's son, Eliott Boulvin, with outdoor adventures forming a big part of their family life. In July 2026, Mechel, Ludo and Eliott travelled to Tanzania and climbed Mount Kilimanjaro, eventually reaching the summit together. After spending so much time preparing for fights, apparently climbing one of the world's best-known mountains was the obvious way to relax.
Goessens also remains close to her father, whom she regards as an important source of encouragement. Outside the gym and competitions, she enjoys spending time with friends over meals, travelling and getting outdoors when life becomes too hectic. Trips to Thailand, Switzerland and Uzbekistan have featured among her travels, while nature seems to provide the quiet contrast to the controlled chaos of MMA training.
Her dog Jessy also has a place in that quieter side of life. Between family, friends, travel, training and competition, Goessens' life now looks considerably broader than the version viewers saw inside The Arena. The Netflix series introduced her to a much wider audience, but her career did not wait around for the cameras to stop rolling.
My take is that Goessens' The Arena story works precisely because it did not end with the fairy-tale professional contract. She reached the semi-finals, made a costly mistake and went home, which is much closer to how competitive sport actually works. One missed opportunity can wipe out weeks of preparation, and there is no dramatic rewind button waiting behind the cage. More importantly, her career afterwards makes the result feel less like a defeat and more like a useful detour.
She was already building something outside television, and the show simply put a brighter spotlight on it. The combination of fighter, coach's partner, gym operator and Belgian representative gives her story considerably more substance than the usual reality-competition arc. If anything, losing on Netflix may have been the least interesting thing that happened to her.
For now, Mechel Goessens is still fighting, training and representing Belgium, while building a life around MMA with Boulvin and their family. Her The Arena appearance may have introduced her to viewers who had never heard her name, but her results since then suggest she has plenty more to say inside the cage. Did Goessens deserve to reach the final on The Arena, or did Kheira Belal expose the one mistake that ultimately cost her? Let us know what you think.
