S.W.A.T. Exiles has already reached the end of its first season, and the question now is whether Starz will send Hondo and his unruly new squad back into the field for Season 2. Watching Jude, Sammy, Cassidy, Ethan and Malik make difficult calls without him could create a more mature second season, while also giving Hondo something new to struggle with: letting go. For a character who has spent much of the story trying to regain control, that could be considerably more uncomfortable than another hostage situation.
The connection to the original S.W.A.T. series offers another route. Rather than turning the sequel into a nostalgia exercise, Season 2 could bring back legacy characters when their presence genuinely affects the new team's story. That would allow the spin-off to acknowledge its roots without making every episode feel like a reunion special. Nobody needs Hondo's new recruits standing around while veterans explain how things were done back in the day. They have enough problems already.
My view is that the most interesting version of Season 2 would be one that trusts the new team instead of constantly leaning on the original S.W.A.T. formula. The whole point of Exiles is that these recruits are outsiders, and the first season spends considerable time establishing why that matters.
If Season 2 simply resets them into another conventional tactical squad, some of that identity disappears. Giving them harder decisions, more independence and consequences for their mistakes would make the continuation feel like a genuine progression rather than another lap around the same track. Hondo should remain important, but he does not need to solve every problem before the opening credits have finished.
