| Smile 3 Release Date, Plot and Cast: What Could Happen After Smile 2? |
Smile 3 is officially happening, and after the spectacularly bleak ending of Smile 2, the third film has a rather awkward problem to solve: the curse may no longer be interested in haunting one unlucky person at a time. Paramount Pictures has confirmed the sequel is in development, but an exact release date has not been announced. If production moves smoothly, Smile 3 could arrive in 2027, although that remains an expectation rather than a confirmed date.
The bigger question is where Parker Finn’s horror universe can possibly go next. The first Smile centred on Rose Cotter as she tried to understand a supernatural curse that seemed determined to make her life considerably worse, while Smile 2 widened the story through pop star Skye Riley.
Her attempt to regain control of her life eventually collapsed into a terrifying series of visions, with the apparent victory over the Smile Entity revealed to be another cruel trick. By the finale, Skye dies on stage in front of a huge audience, potentially passing the curse to an enormous number of witnesses.
That ending changes the rules considerably. Rather than leaving one doomed character to deal with the Smile Entity in private, Smile 3 could inherit a situation involving thousands of potential victims. Suddenly, this is less "one person has a very bad week" and more "someone really should have called the authorities several movies ago".
Smile 3 Could Turn Into a Smile Apocalypse
The most obvious theory for Smile 3 is that the franchise could finally move into apocalyptic territory. The second film's ending strongly suggests that everyone who witnessed Skye's death could become part of the Entity's next chain of targets. If the curse continues operating on the same seven-day pattern established by the earlier films, the consequences could become impossible to contain.
That gives the third film an opportunity to move beyond the familiar structure of following a single protagonist. Instead, the story could jump between several cursed characters as they realise something is terribly wrong, while police, medical professionals and other authorities begin connecting what initially look like unrelated incidents. The Smile Entity has spent two films hiding behind personal trauma and distorted perceptions. Having thousands of people affected at once would make secrecy rather difficult.
It would also give Smile 3 a chance to explore how the wider world reacts to something that cannot easily be explained. Imagine trying to convince the public that a bizarre chain of incidents is connected to an invisible supernatural force that manifests through creepy grins. Good luck with that press conference.
The scale could become one of the franchise's biggest selling points, but it would also be a risk. The intimate psychological horror of the first two films helped make the series distinctive, so going too large could potentially lose some of that unsettling atmosphere. Fans are likely to be divided between those who want the story to become increasingly ambitious and those who would rather see it return to the claustrophobic approach that made Smile so effective.
Will Parker Finn Direct Smile 3?
The involvement of Parker Finn remains another major question surrounding Smile 3. Finn created the franchise and directed the first two films, giving the series its recognisable visual language and particular approach to supernatural horror. Whether he returns to direct the third instalment, however, has not been definitively settled.
Finn is also attached to the Possession remake, which could create a crowded schedule if both projects move forward around the same period. That has fuelled speculation that Smile 3 could eventually be handed to another director. Nothing about that possibility means the franchise would necessarily abandon Finn's approach, though. A new filmmaker could continue the established mythology while putting their own spin on the increasingly strange world of the Smile Entity.
For now, the safest assumption is that the third film's creative team will become clearer as production develops. Until then, any claim about who will sit in the director's chair should be treated as theory rather than fact.
Peter Jacobson Could Return as Morris
If Smile 3 does bring back a familiar face, Peter Jacobson as Morris is arguably the most interesting possibility. Morris is one of the few characters who has spent meaningful time trying to understand how the curse works rather than simply running away from it, which puts him in a useful position for the next chapter.
His knowledge could make him particularly important if the third film deals with a much larger outbreak. Morris could become the person attempting to organise a response, investigate the Entity's weaknesses and determine whether the theories presented in Smile 2 have any basis in reality. He could even take on something resembling a mentor role for a new protagonist.
That would allow Smile 3 to introduce an entirely new central character without throwing away everything established by the previous films. The franchise has already shown that its protagonists do not necessarily get much of a retirement plan, so having Morris survive long enough to become the person with answers would be a refreshing change.
Could Elizabeth Riley and Darius Bravo Return?
There are also reasons to keep an eye on Elizabeth Riley, played by Rosemarie DeWitt, along with Darius Bravo and members of Skye's management team. They witnessed what happened to Skye, which could potentially put them directly into the Entity's next cycle.
Their return would allow the sequel to pick up immediately from the consequences of Smile 2, but it is far from guaranteed. The franchise could just as easily move forward with an entirely new group of characters and use the previous films as the foundation for a much wider story.
That approach would arguably make sense. Smile and Smile 2 already established a loose anthology-like pattern, with new protagonists entering the same nightmare while the mythology gradually expands. Smile 3 could continue that formula while allowing a handful of survivors and supporting characters to connect the stories.
Smile 3 Could Finally Explain the Smile Entity
After two films, perhaps the biggest mystery is still the simplest one: what exactly is the Smile Entity?
The films have provided plenty of clues but very few concrete answers. The Entity appears to exploit fear, shame, trauma and the secrets people desperately want to keep buried. It can manipulate perception, create elaborate hallucinations and appear in forms that are difficult to distinguish from reality. Yet its actual origins remain deliberately unclear.
That ambiguity could become one of the most important parts of Smile 3. The film could finally reveal where the Entity came from, why it chooses certain people and what exactly allows its curse to pass from one person to another. Alternatively, the filmmakers could continue keeping its nature deliberately mysterious, which might be wiser than explaining every strange detail until the monster starts sounding like it needs a Wikipedia page.
There is also an intriguing possibility involving Morris. His theory about breaking the curse was never properly proven because much of what audiences saw surrounding it was filtered through Skye's distorted reality. Smile 3 could revisit that idea and finally test whether there is a genuine way to stop the Entity.
Could Smile 3 Actually Kill the Entity?
The third film could also represent the point where someone finally finds a permanent solution. After two stories built around characters becoming trapped in the Entity's cycle, repeating the same ending again could start to feel predictable. A genuine attempt to destroy or contain it would raise the stakes in a different way.
The potentially enormous number of cursed people introduced by Smile 2 could help create a multi-character story in which different victims experience the Entity in different ways. Rather than focusing exclusively on one person's descent, the film could show how the curse spreads and how people attempt to break the pattern.
There is even room for the franchise to explore whether the monstrous figure seen by its victims is actually the Entity's true physical form. If cursed people are the only ones capable of interacting with it directly, that could become an important clue in any attempt to defeat it.
Fan reactions to the possibility of Smile 3 are naturally mixed. Some viewers are excited by the idea of taking the franchise into much larger territory, particularly after Smile 2 ended by potentially opening the door to an enormous chain reaction. Others would prefer the third film to remain focused on one character and preserve the unsettling psychological approach of the earlier instalments.
The question of Parker Finn's involvement has also become part of that conversation, with fans understandably curious about whether another director could maintain the franchise's distinctive identity. Meanwhile, Morris has emerged as one of the most logical returning characters because he has something the previous protagonists desperately lacked: actual knowledge about the curse.
For now, Smile 3 remains a film with plenty of possibilities but relatively few confirmed details. A 2027 release looks plausible rather than guaranteed, the cast has yet to be formally revealed, and the story could range from another intimate supernatural thriller to a full-scale crisis involving thousands of cursed witnesses. After the chaos of Smile 2, though, expecting the third film to quietly reset everything would probably be the least realistic theory of them all. Which Smile 3 theory do you think makes the most sense: a wider apocalypse story, Morris returning to find a cure, or a completely new direction for the Entity?
