Olivia Cooke’s Sid Baker is alive in Slow Horses, despite the Season 1 storyline making it look very much as though the MI5 agent had been killed. Season 6, Episode 2 finally brings Sid back into River Cartwright’s orbit, turning what once looked like a closed case into one of the series’ more intriguing loose ends. The twist is not completely out of nowhere, either. The show quietly left itself a rather convenient escape hatch years ago.
Sid was originally introduced as a member of Slough House, although her situation was different from the usual collection of MI5 agents dumped there after making a spectacular professional mess of things. She had actually been placed under Jackson Lamb by Diana Taverner, with instructions to watch River. In other words, Sid was never quite the failed-agent stereotype that Slough House tends to attract.
Her disappearance came during the events surrounding journalist Robert Hobden. Sid and River followed a masked man into Hobden’s home, where things quickly became rather unpleasant. Sid confronted Jed Moody, the masked intruder, and was shot in the head during the confrontation. MI5 personnel later took her to hospital, giving the scene enough finality to make viewers assume the worst.
Then came the particularly suspicious part.
River was eventually told that Sid was gone, but Slow Horses never gave viewers an outright confirmation of her death. That distinction matters considerably in a series where information is routinely withheld, manipulated or buried under several layers of MI5 bureaucracy. Sid had apparently been stable enough to survive the shooting, making the sudden news of her disappearance feel strange even at the time.
The bigger clue came from Roddy Ho. After the events of Season 1, the Slough House tech expert discovered that Sid’s records had been erased from the MI5 database. That was hardly the sort of administrative housekeeping you would expect after an ordinary agent's death. If anything, it looked as though somebody had deliberately wiped Sid from the system.
Roddy therefore became one of the first people to suspect that Sid might still be alive. He may have been irritating about approximately 400 other things, but on this particular matter, the man had a point.
Season 6 now appears to confirm that suspicion. What remains unclear is exactly how Sid survived and who arranged it. The circumstances strongly suggest that her supposed death was staged, potentially with help from people higher up within the Park. Given that Sid was working undercover rather than serving in Slough House because of a career blunder, she was arguably still a useful MI5 asset.
That makes a secret relocation or off-the-books assignment a plausible explanation. If the Park wanted Sid to disappear completely, faking her death would solve several problems at once. She could operate without her previous identity getting in the way, while anyone looking for her would have very little official information to follow.
It would also explain why Sid never returned to her old colleagues. From River’s perspective, she had vanished. From Sid’s perspective, contacting River or the rest of Slough House could have undone whatever protection the disappearance was designed to provide. There is, after all, not much point in being officially dead if you immediately start sending former colleagues cheerful messages asking how things are going.
Her unexpected appearance at the Cartwright house in Season 6, however, raises a fresh set of questions. Sid’s return seems connected in some way to the assassins targeting former Slough House members, although the precise relationship has yet to become clear. Damien Cantor’s interest in Slough House and its records could also be part of the same puzzle.
That is what makes Sid’s return more interesting than a simple “surprise, she survived” reveal. Her survival appears to be connected to the wider threat developing around Lamb, River and the remnants of Slough House. The show has effectively taken an old mystery, dusted it off and dropped it back on River’s doorstep several seasons later.
There is also something satisfying about the fact that Roddy’s Season 1 suspicion now looks increasingly important. At the time, his discovery could have been treated as another odd detail in a series packed with suspicious MI5 behaviour. Instead, it became the breadcrumb leading towards one of the show's longest-running unresolved questions.
The bigger issue is what Sid has been doing all this time. The information so far does not provide a definitive answer, and it would be premature to assume precisely who helped her disappear or what assignment kept her away from Slough House. What does seem clear is that Sid’s “death” was not the end of her MI5 story. It was probably the point where her old identity stopped being useful.
My take is that Sid’s return works because Slow Horses planted the answer long before it needed to explain it. The erased records were always a suspicious detail, and bringing Sid back now makes that old mystery feel considerably less random. I also like that the show has not rushed to explain every detail. Sid being alive is interesting; Sid being alive while nobody quite knows who helped her, why she disappeared or what she has been doing is much more fun.
The only danger is that the eventual explanation needs to be stronger than “MI5 had a secret plan”, because that excuse can cover almost anything in this universe. Still, Olivia Cooke’s return gives the story a useful complication, particularly for River, who now has to deal with a former colleague he believed was dead. And after all those years, that is one awkward reunion nobody can solve with a quick cup of tea.
For now, Sid Baker is alive, her Season 1 death appears to have been staged, and the missing pieces point towards a much larger operation involving the Park, Slough House and the new threat surrounding its former agents.
