Chad Powers Season 3 has plenty of story left to play with, even though Hulu has yet to officially renew the sports comedy for another season. Season 2 leaves Russ Holliday in an increasingly complicated situation, while Tricia Yeager is pulled into the secret surrounding Chad Powers and Gerry gets dangerously close to exposing the whole operation. If the series returns, the next chapter could turn Russ’s already ridiculous cover story into an even bigger mess.
The biggest change heading into a potential third season is Tricia joining Russ and Danny’s inner circle. For most of the story, Russ and Danny Cruz have managed to keep the Chad Powers secret between themselves, with assistant coach Ricky Hudson occasionally helping them clean up whatever disaster they have created. That arrangement was already held together with what can generously be described as optimism. Bringing Tricia into the picture changes the balance completely.
At the end of season 2, Danny turns to Tricia when Gerry appears ready to expose Chad’s true identity. Tricia, who has shown repeatedly that winning matters more to her than following the rulebook, becomes the unlikely person capable of protecting Russ and keeping him on the Catfish roster. Her decision to take Russ and Danny to her family farm also suggests that she has much bigger plans for the quarterback.
That could make Tricia one of the most important characters in Chad Powers Season 3. She is not simply another person who knows the secret. She now has enough influence to shape what happens to Russ, and her desire to keep him playing could create a new set of problems. Russ has spent much of the series trying to control the situation himself, but adding someone with her own agenda means he may finally have to accept that the Chad Powers operation is no longer entirely his.
There is also the question of Gerry. His obsession with discovering Chad's secret reaches another level in season 2, only for Danny's risky intervention to stop him from getting the definitive answer he wants. That does not necessarily mean the problem has disappeared. Gerry now has every reason to remain suspicious, and season 3 could easily turn his investigation into a recurring headache for Russ and everyone foolish enough to help him.
If the series gets renewed, the main cast is likely to remain largely intact. Glen Powell should be expected back as Russ Holliday, the man hiding behind the Chad Powers persona, while Perry Mattfeld would return as Ricky Hudson and Frankie A. Rodriguez as Danny Cruz. Steve Zahn is also likely to remain central as Coach Jake Hudson, whose discovery of Russ and Ricky together at the end of season 2 could make the next season considerably more awkward.
The wider Catfish circle could return too, including Wynn Everett as Tricia Yeager, Clayne Crawford as Coach Dobbs, Quentin Plair as Coach Byrd and Toby Huss as Mike Holliday. Players and supporting figures such as Xavier Mills, Rod and Sasha could likewise remain part of the story, while a third season would have plenty of room to introduce fresh characters who inevitably become involved in Russ's increasingly elaborate deception. At this point, though, none of those returns should be treated as officially confirmed until Hulu announces a renewal.
The most obvious storyline for season 3 is arguably Russ and Ricky's relationship. Their slow-burn connection finally moves forward in season 2 when Russ admits how he feels and the two share a romantic moment in the locker room. Naturally, their attempt at privacy lasts about as long as anyone familiar with this show would expect. Coach Hudson catches them, instantly turning what could have been a sweet development into another potential catastrophe.
Their relationship is complicated enough without adding Russ's secret identity to the equation. Ricky is dealing with someone who publicly exists as Chad Powers, while privately knowing the man underneath the disguise is Russ. If their relationship becomes more serious, keeping those two identities separate becomes increasingly difficult. One wrong conversation, one suspicious photograph or one badly timed appearance could unravel far more than their personal lives.
Coach Hudson's discovery could make things even messier. Whether he confronts Ricky, Russ, both of them or simply keeps the information to himself remains an intriguing question for a potential third season. He could become another person who knows too much, which is practically a job requirement in Russ Holliday's increasingly crowded circle of secrets.
The relationship could also force Russ to reconsider what he actually wants. His original goal was to get back into football by pretending to be someone else, but the longer the Chad Powers identity survives, the more complicated his life becomes. By season 3, the story could explore whether Russ can maintain his football career, his relationships and his fake identity without eventually dropping one of the three.
Fans' reactions to the possibility of a third season are likely to vary depending on which part of the show they enjoy most. Some will want more of Russ and Ricky, particularly after the season 2 cliffhanger, while others may be more interested in seeing what happens now that Tricia knows the truth.
