Shavonnah Jefferson: Where Is The New Stanford Prison Experiment Participant Now?

Shavonnah Jefferson is pursuing a career in music, radio and entertainment after appearing as a guard in Netflix’s The New Stanford Prison Experiment. Having spent two weeks taking part in the reality experiment, the Chicago native brought her experience in security work, her firm approach to setting boundaries and her determination to stand her ground into an environment designed to examine how people respond to authority. Today, she is based in Nashville, Tennessee, where she combines broadcasting, music production, event promotion and entrepreneurship. Her journey is a reminder that appearing on a reality series does not have to be the main event in someone's life.

Netflix’s The New Stanford Prison Experiment revisits questions raised by the controversial 1971 Stanford prison study, which examined how people behaved when assigned positions of authority or placed in subordinate roles. This modern version brings together 30 participants inside a real prison for two weeks, with safeguards intended to address concerns associated with the original experiment.

The central question remains familiar: does power change people, or does it simply reveal qualities they already possess? Jefferson entered the experiment as a guard, a role that suited her professional background rather neatly. After all, some participants had to learn how to handle authority on camera, while she already had experience working in security.

Shavonnah Jefferson’s upbringing helped shape her approach to authority. Growing up in Chicago, Illinois, she experienced an environment that she has described as difficult, with limited financial resources and a lack of the stability many people take for granted. Those experiences influenced the guarded, determined personality viewers encountered on the programme. Jefferson explained that she developed a defensive approach to confrontation because she learned early on that protecting herself was important. It is not necessarily the easiest way to move through life, but it helps explain why she is reluctant to let others cross her boundaries.

During the series, Jefferson also discussed feeling misunderstood by people who focus on her tough exterior without making much effort to understand the person behind it. That distinction matters because confidence can easily be mistaken for hostility, particularly when a woman refuses to soften her position simply to make other people comfortable.

Jefferson's approach is direct: she believes people need to speak up for themselves rather than expect others to recognise when they have been treated unfairly. Her attitude is hardly a revolutionary discovery, but it is one that many people could probably stand to remember.

Her participation also reflected a desire to demonstrate that women can handle positions of authority just as effectively as men. As a professional security guard, Jefferson brought practical experience to a role that required her to navigate rules, personalities and the expectations attached to being in charge.

The experiment placed those qualities under an unfamiliar spotlight, giving viewers an opportunity to consider how authority operates when ordinary people are placed in unusual circumstances. Jefferson did not need to reinvent herself to fit the role. Instead, her established approach to responsibility and confrontation became part of what made her participation interesting.

Away from Netflix, Jefferson has spent years developing her interests in music and entertainment. Her ambitions began when she was young, eventually leading her to pursue further education in several fields. She studied Commercial Music Management, Television Production and Phlebotomy at South Suburban College and Austin Community College.

She also attended Clayton State University, where she pursued a bachelor's degree in Film and Video Studies. Her educational choices might look like an eclectic collection of interests on paper, but they also point towards someone willing to explore different routes rather than wait for a single opportunity to appear.

Jefferson's career has reflected that same willingness to diversify. In 2012, she began working as a Tax Examiner with the US Department of the Treasury, remaining in the position until July 2021. Alongside that role, she developed experience in event management, film production and entertainment. She worked as a Production Assistant at Simboya Film from 2016 to 2023 and served as a Seasonal Talent Wrangler and Production Assistant for BET between 2015 and 2023.

She also undertook freelance work as an executive assistant and security professional. It was a busy combination of responsibilities, although anyone trying to maintain several careers at once will know that having multiple job titles does not magically create extra hours in the day.

Mutt-Mutt Productions LLC became another important part of Jefferson's professional journey. She established the full-service production company in 2014 and holds the positions of Chief Executive Officer and Chief Financial Officer. Running a production business gives her a platform to pursue projects in entertainment while drawing on the experience she has accumulated across different industries. Rather than relying on one employer or one creative opportunity, she has worked to build a professional identity that can accommodate several interests. It is a practical approach for someone whose ambitions extend beyond a single occupation.

In 2022, Jefferson returned to higher education through Chaffey College, studying Television, Radio and Digital Communication. She completed her bachelor's degree in January 2026, adding another qualification to her growing background in media. The degree also aligns with her move towards broadcasting and music, allowing her to bring together interests that had developed over many years. Education does not guarantee success in entertainment, of course, but it can provide useful knowledge and structure for someone determined to turn creative ambitions into a sustainable career.

Shavonnah Jefferson is now based in Nashville, Tennessee, a city closely associated with the music industry. Her work spans radio hosting, singing and songwriting, music production and entrepreneurship. She has also been working as an Event and Promotions Coordinator at Cromwell Media since March 2024, while taking on a Promotions Assistant role at Cumulus Media in October 2025. These positions give her opportunities to work across broadcasting and live events while continuing to develop her own creative projects.

Her event experience has also remained part of her professional life. On 29 August 2026, Jefferson participated in the One League, One Love Ultimate Tailgate Experience at Starr Park Amphitheater in Forest Park, Georgia. The event added another entry to a career that has moved between entertainment production, promotions and music. Rather than treating her Netflix appearance as the centre of everything she does, Jefferson appears to have continued pursuing the work that interested her long before she entered the experiment.

Her personal life also appears to remain important to her. Jefferson has spoken about her Christian faith and maintains a close relationship with her parents. She also has an interest in beverages, adding a more relaxed detail to a public image often defined by her confidence and no-nonsense attitude. While public information offers only a limited picture of someone's private life, her professional activities suggest that she has plenty to keep her occupied outside reality television.

As for what comes next, Jefferson's work in Nashville places her in a position to continue exploring music, radio and live entertainment. Her combination of production experience, broadcasting work and business ownership gives her several possible directions, although her future projects will ultimately determine how those ambitions develop. For now, she seems focused on building a career rather than allowing a reality television appearance to define her entire professional identity.

In my opinion, Jefferson is an interesting example of how reality television can introduce viewers to people whose lives are far more varied than a single programme can show. Her firm attitude might make her stand out in a prison experiment, but the more revealing part of her story is what she has done outside it. She has worked in government, security, film production, event management and broadcasting while pursuing music and running her own company.

That is quite a collection of career changes, even by modern standards. There is also something refreshing about someone who appears unwilling to abandon her ambitions simply because the route towards them is complicated. Of course, managing several professional interests can be exhausting, and success in entertainment is never guaranteed. Still, Jefferson has built a foundation that extends beyond a Netflix appearance. That is arguably a more meaningful achievement than becoming a familiar face on reality television.

Ultimately, where is Shavonnah Jefferson now? She is living in Nashville, Tennessee, and continuing to build her career across radio, music, promotions and production after appearing in The New Stanford Prison Experiment. Her journey combines a challenging upbringing, professional experience and a determination to explore different opportunities without losing sight of her goals.

Whether her next chapter brings more broadcasting work, new music or further production projects, there is plenty of room for her story to develop.
