Average Joe season 3 remains unconfirmed, but the second season has left Joe Washington with a rather serious problem: his family’s fate is hanging in the balance, while the Afghan mafia now has a reason to come looking for him. The story has already moved from a family inheritance gone badly wrong to international criminal dealings, and the season 2 finale leaves plenty of room for another chapter. If the series returns, Joe is unlikely to get much of a quiet life. At this point, peace and Joe Washington appear to have officially broken up.
Season 2 pushed Joe, Touch, Leon and Cathy from America to South Africa after Joe became convinced that his family was in danger. What initially looked like a rescue mission turned out to be another elaborate scheme involving Teddy Washington, Joe’s supposedly dead father. Teddy was still alive and had become entangled with local crime boss Sipho, using Joe’s arrival and his meeting with his half-sister Imani as part of a plan to secure his own escape.
That plan did not exactly end well. Teddy’s manipulation eventually caught up with him, and Imani shot her father, putting an end to his latest attempt to control everyone around him. Naturally, Teddy still managed to cause problems after his death. His actions helped lead Joe back towards the missing heroin, while Joe’s increasingly complicated dealings with Cathy created another mess that could easily follow him into a potential season 3.
The bigger problem is that Sipho’s death does not make the heroin issue disappear. Quite the opposite. His dealings with the Afghan mafia leave unfinished business, and Amina is placed in the uncomfortable position of sorting it out. She knows about Teddy, the stolen drugs and his links to Joe, making Joe an obvious target once Sipho is out of the picture.
That puts Angela and Jennifer at the centre of the biggest season 3 mystery. Amina manages to get past the FBI protection surrounding Joe’s wife and daughter and takes them hostage in an attempt to force Joe into returning the heroin. Joe hesitates, and Amina orders her men to kill them. The final moments then deliver two gunshots over the phone before the episode cuts away.
So, are Angela and Jennifer actually dead? The series deliberately refuses to answer that question. If season 3 happens, their fate could become one of its main storylines. Their survival would give Joe an immediate rescue mission, while their deaths would fundamentally change what remains of him and could push him further into the criminal world he has repeatedly tried to escape.
There is also plenty of room for the show to play with the possibility that the gunshots were not quite what they sounded like. Television has never been particularly shy about leaving characters in peril and then finding an inconveniently creative way to keep them alive. Until the story confirms what happened, both possibilities remain open.
The expected Average Joe season 3 cast would probably retain much of the central group if the series returns. Deon Cole would be expected to continue as Joe Washington, alongside Malcolm Barrett as Leon Montgomery, Cynthia Kaye McWilliams as Cathy Montgomery and Michael Trucco as Benjamin “Touch” Tuchawuski. Bianca Simone Mannie’s Amina has also become increasingly important, making her potential return particularly significant.
Katlego Lebogang’s Imani and Pearl Thusi’s Phyllis could also remain part of the wider story, although their future involvement is less straightforward. Both characters have their own reasons for keeping their distance from Joe’s increasingly dangerous lifestyle. Then there is Angela, played by Tammy Townsend, and Jennifer, played by Ashley Olivia Fisher. Their return would depend heavily on the answer to the season 2 cliffhanger.
A third season could also bring in several new faces. With Amina now positioned against Joe, the story has a natural route into a wider network connected to the Afghan mafia. That would give the series another collection of antagonists without simply repeating the same villain formula from earlier seasons.
That formula has already become fairly clear. Season 1 revolved around Russian gangster Nicolai and his organisation, while season 2 shifted the focus to Sipho and his criminal operation. Season 3 could therefore hand the central threat to the Afghan mafia, with Amina acting as the character who connects Joe directly to the new conflict.
Amina has already made her intentions towards Joe clear, so there would be little reason for the show to spend half a season pretending she might simply forget about him. If she continues the hunt, Joe could once again be forced to rely on Touch and Leon, dragging the group back into a world that none of them seems particularly capable of leaving behind.
Leon and Cathy could make that situation even messier. Their relationship remains complicated at the end of season 2, while Joe's choices have consequences for everyone around him. The trio could therefore find themselves dealing with two problems at once: staying alive and figuring out who can actually be trusted. In Joe’s case, those two tasks increasingly look like the same job.
The potential story also gives Average Joe another opportunity to explore Joe’s transformation. He began as an ordinary mechanic who was suddenly thrown into a criminal nightmare, but two seasons of violence, deception and increasingly questionable decisions have changed his circumstances considerably. A third season could push that transformation further, particularly if his family has been harmed.
My take is that Average Joe season 3 has a fairly obvious dramatic engine if the show gets renewed, but the Angela and Jennifer cliffhanger is what really gives it momentum. The Afghan mafia connection feels like a natural escalation rather than a random new threat, while Amina already has a personal reason to pursue Joe. The interesting part would be seeing whether Joe still tries to get out of this world or finally accepts that running away is no longer realistic.
Touch and Leon could bring some much-needed personality into what could otherwise become a relentlessly grim revenge story, and Cathy’s uncertain position gives the group another layer of trouble. The one thing the show should avoid is simply replacing Sipho with another villain and repeating the same chase. Joe’s story works better when the crime plot keeps colliding with his relationships and bad decisions. If season 3 happens, that is where the real fun could be.
For now, Average Joe season 3 has not been officially renewed, so there is no confirmed release date or final cast list to report. If another season is eventually ordered, 2028 would be a possible timeframe based on the production gap required for development and filming, rather than a confirmed premiere date. Until then, the biggest question remains brutally simple: what happened to Angela and Jennifer after those two gunshots? And if they survived, what exactly is Joe prepared to do next?
