My Brilliant Career has left Sybylla Melvyn with exactly the sort of ending that makes a second season feel almost inevitable. After spending much of the first six episodes being pulled between romance, family expectations and her ambition to become a writer, Sybylla finally chooses the one thing she has been fighting for all along: a life of her own. Netflix has not yet confirmed Season 2, but the finale leaves the door wide open, and if the story continues, Sydney looks like the obvious next destination.
The first season ends with Sybylla preparing to leave her town after finding a way to settle her father’s debt and free herself from the McSwats. She has spent a year working there while waiting to hear from Harry Beecham, who has been trying to rebuild his finances before returning to her. When Harry finally comes back and proposes, however, Sybylla does something that would have seemed almost unthinkable earlier in the story: she says no.
That decision is the real turning point. Sybylla once seemed ready to marry Harry, particularly after breaking away from Frank Hawden, but her time away has changed what she wants from life. She now understands that marriage is not simply a romantic happy ending for her. It could also mean putting her writing aside, and she has no intention of swapping a dream she has worked towards for a comfortable life chosen on somebody else’s terms.
So, what would My Brilliant Career Season 2 actually be about? The strongest possibility is Sybylla's move to Sydney, where she can finally test whether her ambition survives outside the safety, frustrations and familiar faces of Caddagat. Rather than another round of romantic indecision, the next chapter could focus much more heavily on her attempt to establish herself as a writer while discovering what independence really looks like.
The direction also makes sense because of Miles Franklin’s My Career Goes Bung, the later book connected to Sybylla’s story. It is not a straightforward continuation of My Brilliant Career, but it offers material that could give the Netflix adaptation a useful path forward. The series could borrow elements from that story while reshaping them for television, allowing Sybylla to arrive in Sydney with her manuscript and begin pursuing a professional writing career.
Her move would not mean she has to navigate the city completely alone. Helen Bossier has already gone to Sydney in search of greater freedom, while Augusta Beecham could become one of Sybylla’s most important allies. Augusta, in particular, could help introduce Sybylla to the world of publishers, writers and city life, although anyone expecting the transition to be smooth has clearly forgotten who they are dealing with. Sybylla is unlikely to arrive in Sydney, smile politely and immediately become the toast of the literary world.
Instead, Season 2 could explore the less glamorous side of becoming a writer. Sybylla may have finished her manuscript, but getting someone to take it seriously is another matter entirely. A publishing opportunity could give her the break she wants, while rejection, financial uncertainty and the expectations placed on young women could force her to decide just how much she is willing to sacrifice for her career.
The cast could also expand considerably if the story moves into the city. Philippa Northeast would naturally remain at the centre as Sybylla Melvyn, while Kate Mulvany as Augusta Beecham and Genevieve O’Reilly as Helen Bossier could have much larger roles. Their presence would give Sybylla a stronger circle of women around her as she enters a very different stage of her life.
Back in Caddagat, familiar faces could still have reasons to return. Gertie Melvyn, played by Ella Oliphant, remains connected to the life Sybylla has left behind, while Mrs Bossier, played by Anna Chancellor, and Uncle Julius, played by Alexander England, could continue to appear. Nell and Betty Kirby, played by Sherry-Lee Watson and Miah Madden, could also receive more attention, particularly if the writers want to show how Sybylla's decision affects the people around her rather than simply abandoning the old setting altogether.
Then there is Harry. His rejection is likely to become one of the most interesting threads if the series returns. Harry still cares deeply for Sybylla, but the finale makes it clear that love alone is no longer enough to convince her to change direction. He has also been dealing with his own financial struggles, meaning both characters are heading into uncertain territory rather than simply waiting for the perfect romantic reunion.
There is certainly room for Harry to return, particularly because of his connection to Augusta and the wider Beecham family. However, he would probably work better as a recurring presence than as the central love interest. If Season 2 follows Sybylla into Sydney, introducing new people and new possibilities would allow the show to explore her emotional life without undoing the decision she made in the finale.
Frank Hawden, meanwhile, appears to have a much clearer exit. After accepting that Sybylla loves Harry, Frank gives up his hopes of marrying her and prepares to return to England. His departure could mark the end of that particular chapter, although television has never been especially respectful of the phrase “goodbye for good”. Still, his return would need a strong reason if the story is to move forward rather than simply revisit old conflicts.
Fan reactions to the possibility of a second season are likely to remain divided. Some viewers will want Sybylla and Harry to find their way back to each other, particularly after investing so much time in their relationship. Others will see the finale as the point where Sybylla finally stops allowing romance to dictate the shape of her future and will want the series to protect that choice. There is also plenty of curiosity around the Sydney setting, because moving Sybylla into a larger and more competitive world could give the drama a fresh identity rather than simply repeating the first season.
That uncertainty could be exactly what makes a second season worthwhile. My Brilliant Career has already established that Sybylla is not interested in being handed a neat ending simply because the story happens to involve romance. Her decision to pursue writing gives the series a much bigger question to explore: can she build the life she wants without losing the people she loves along the way?
For now, My Brilliant Career Season 2 remains unconfirmed, so any cast additions, Sydney storylines or Harry developments should be treated as theories rather than announced details. If Netflix does bring the drama back, however, Sybylla's next chapter has plenty of material to work with, from her first attempt to become a published writer to the new friendships, rivalries and romantic complications waiting in Sydney.
