My Brilliant Career leaves Sybylla Melvyn with a choice that looks simple on paper but becomes increasingly impossible once love, family expectations and her own ambitions collide. She does agree to marry Frank Hawden after their unexpected New Year’s Eve encounter, but the arrangement quickly falls apart, and by the end Frank leaves Caddagat without Sybylla. When Sybylla first arrives at Caddagat, marriage is practically the last thing on her mind. She has been sent to live with her grandmother partly because her family is struggling financially, only to discover that there is a rather convenient plan waiting for her: marry a wealthy man and help settle the family’s debts. Sybylla, unsurprisingly, is not thrilled by the idea that her future has apparently been organised like a household expense.
That is where Frank Hawden enters the picture. Frank has travelled from England with marriage very much on his agenda because getting a wife is connected to gaining access to his family fortune.
He is therefore initially interested in Sybylla for reasons that are hardly the stuff of great romance. She is the woman placed in front of him, while marriage is the key that could unlock the comfortable future he wants.
Sybylla never really sees Frank as her husband, though. From the moment they meet, she makes it clear that she does not intend to marry simply because everyone around her thinks she should.
Frank eventually becomes someone she genuinely cares about, but their relationship develops more naturally as a friendship. He respects her boundaries and remains close to her even after she becomes emotionally involved with Harry Beecham.
Harry is the person who changes everything for Sybylla. During her time at Five Bob Downs, she has the opportunity to develop her writing while spending more time with Harry, and their connection gradually becomes much stronger. For Sybylla, marriage may still be an unwelcome concept, but if she were ever going to consider it, Harry is clearly the man she could imagine choosing.
Unfortunately, Harry comes with a rather enormous complication. He is effectively expected to marry Blanche, whose wealth and dowry would help resolve his family's financial problems.
Sybylla eventually discovers the arrangement through Augusta, leaving her heartbroken. She tries to move forward, but Harry's situation makes it impossible for her to simply pretend that their feelings never mattered.
Her complicated feelings also help explain why her relationship with Frank becomes even more difficult to define. Sybylla never decides that Frank is the love of her life, but she grows closer to him while Harry is out of reach.
Then there is Everard Grey, another potential romantic interest who catches Sybylla's attention for a much more practical reason: she wants him to give her work as a writer. Even here, marriage is nowhere near her agenda. Sybylla is far more interested in building a life around her writing than becoming somebody's wife.
That makes the New Year’s Eve incident with Frank particularly important. Sybylla and Frank have agreed to spend the evening enjoying themselves without worrying about marriage or the expectations surrounding them.
After plenty of celebration and wine, they kiss in the woods. Neither of them treats the moment as a declaration that they should suddenly become husband and wife.
The problem arrives when Sybylla writes about the encounter in her journal, and her grandmother discovers it. She immediately understands that the information could damage Sybylla's reputation if it became known beyond Caddagat.
Rather than allowing the matter to disappear quietly, she puts pressure on Frank to marry Sybylla, turning what had been an impulsive moment between friends into a very real proposal.
Frank is not exactly devastated by the idea. By this stage, his feelings for Sybylla have grown considerably, and he has fallen in love with her. He also understands that she may never feel the same way immediately, but he believes their marriage could eventually become a genuine relationship.
Sybylla therefore accepts, partly because Frank is someone she trusts and partly because the alternatives being presented to her are hardly appealing.
Frank then books two tickets to England, expecting to begin a new life with Sybylla. For a moment, it seems as though the story is heading towards a conventional ending, with the reluctant bride eventually settling into marriage. But My Brilliant Career has never really been interested in giving Sybylla a conventional life.
The cracks become obvious when Sybylla learns that her grandmother has given Frank her journal and that he has read it. She feels increasingly as though decisions about her life are being made around her rather than by her.
Frank also tells her that while she can be herself with him privately, she cannot behave in exactly the same way around his family. To Sybylla, that sounds less like a promise of freedom and more like a warning about the person she would be expected to become.
Then Harry returns to complicate matters once again. Sybylla discovers that he was never truly in love with Blanche and that their engagement has ended. When Harry sends Sybylla a gift accompanied by a note, she is furious and emotionally overwhelmed enough to leave her engagement party and confront him. The meeting forces her to face feelings she had been trying to bury.
This is the moment when Frank realises that Sybylla will not marry him. When she eventually returns, he understands that the engagement is effectively over. His reaction is painful because he genuinely loves her, but there is also a sense that he has known for some time that Sybylla's heart was never completely his.

There is also plenty of room for viewers to sympathise with Frank, who arrives expecting one kind of future and leaves having lost the woman he eventually comes to love.
