The 2026 horror drama It Ends turns an ordinary late-night drive into an increasingly strange journey along a road that simply refuses to end, and much of that unsettling atmosphere comes from its Florida filming locations. Tallahassee and Gainesville provided the production with everything from dense woodland and real roads to the technology needed to make the film's seemingly impossible highway work. While some of the more specific shooting spots were kept quiet during production to avoid unwanted interruptions, the locations that have been publicly identified give fans a useful trail to follow.

Written and directed by Alexander Ullom in his feature directorial debut, It Ends follows recent graduates James, Day, Fisher and Tyler as they head out for one final meal together before going their separate ways.

Their simple night out takes a very strange turn when their Jeep Cherokee becomes trapped on a seemingly endless two-lane road. As the journey continues, the group discovers that the surrounding woods hold dangers of their own, leaving them to work out whether escaping the road is even possible.

Unlike films that hop between dozens of recognisable landmarks, It Ends deliberately keeps its world enclosed. The Jeep, the highway and the surrounding Florida wilderness become almost characters themselves.

That was also useful for a production working with limited resources, because there was little need to make the audience feel as though the characters were travelling from one famous destination to another. The point was rather the opposite: they are travelling, yet somehow getting absolutely nowhere.

Tallahassee, Florida, is the principal filming location for It Ends, and the Florida capital played a particularly important role in creating the film's interior sequences. The production used the virtual production facility at Florida State University, 222 South Copeland Street, Tallahassee, for the car-based scenes.

Rather impressively for an independent production, the filmmakers brought the Jeep Cherokee onto the sound stage by cutting it into sections before reassembling it inside the facility. Because apparently getting a car through a studio door was not difficult enough already.

The Florida State University facility allowed Ullom and his team to control the environment outside the vehicle while keeping the actors physically inside the Jeep. This became particularly useful for the film's unusual shifts in time, atmosphere and lighting.

Rather than relying entirely on conventional location shooting, the production could recreate specific conditions and maintain them for as long as required, including extended blue-hour sequences that would have been much harder to capture naturally.

The virtual production approach also helped the filmmakers separate the film's quieter moments from its more frantic sequences. According to the production details provided by the filmmakers, scenes were organised around lighting conditions, allowing the crew to complete groups of morning or evening sequences together.

That meant the production could concentrate on performance and shot design rather than repeatedly rebuilding the same lighting setup. For a film largely taking place inside one vehicle, that sort of planning was particularly important.

The production's relationship with Florida State University was also a matter of timing and circumstance. Ullom has explained that the university had developed the virtual production facility around the period when the filmmakers were looking for the technology and resources required to make the film.

It gave the production access to equipment that would otherwise have been difficult to secure for an independent movie, helping It Ends create a much larger visual world than its budget might initially suggest.

But Tallahassee was not simply a sound-stage destination. The production also filmed on wooded roads and forested stretches around Tallahassee, using the real Florida landscape for the exterior portions of the mysterious highway.

These locations supplied the natural environment surrounding the characters as their journey becomes increasingly unsettling. The roads needed to feel isolated enough to suggest that the four friends could continue driving without finding an obvious way back to civilisation.

The real-road filming came with considerably less control than the sound stage. The cast and crew had to contend with the changing conditions of outdoor production while working in long stretches surrounded by forest.

That contrast became part of the filmmaking experience itself: inside the studio, the crew had air conditioning and controlled lighting; outside, they had Florida woodland, real roads and the occasional reminder that nature had not read the shooting schedule.

The other major location is Gainesville, Florida, where the production filmed additional exterior material in wooded areas around the city. Gainesville's forested surroundings helped expand the visual world of the infinite highway while keeping the film firmly rooted in the Florida landscape. Rather than presenting the woods as a postcard version of the state, It Ends uses them as an increasingly uncomfortable extension of the road.

The Gainesville woodland areas are particularly important because the film's story depends on the relationship between the road and everything beyond it. The characters may spend much of their time inside the Jeep, but the forest surrounding them constantly suggests that there is something else waiting outside.

It creates the wonderfully inconvenient situation of having two places to worry about: the road they cannot escape and the woods they probably should not enter.

The production's choice of Florida was also largely practical. Ullom has explained that the filmmakers had access to resources and equipment there, making the state a realistic choice for an independent production.

The director had imagined shooting somewhere with the towering forests associated with the Pacific Northwest, but the available resources pointed towards Florida instead. The result was a different kind of woodland atmosphere, with Florida's dense natural environment bringing its own personality to the film.

That decision may actually work in the film's favour. Florida's woods have a distinctive visual character, and It Ends uses that landscape without pretending it is somewhere else.

The thick vegetation and isolated roads help create the impression that the characters have driven into a part of the world where normal rules have stopped applying. Considering the story is about an endless highway, having a landscape that already feels difficult to navigate is rather convenient.

The production was also unusually long in terms of its development. It Ends was filmed on three separate occasions, with production taking place around October 2022, June 2023 and May 2024, with each shoot lasting roughly 20 days.

Ullom has indicated that only a small number of scenes from the earliest 2022 production remained in the final version, showing how significantly the film evolved before reaching audiences in 2026.

That lengthy production history also explains why fans should be careful when looking for supposed secret filming spots online. Not every precise road, woodland entrance or roadside point used by the crew was publicly identified while filming was taking place.

Keeping some details private is a sensible move, particularly for a production working on isolated roads where a sudden crowd of curious visitors would hardly make the filming process easier.

For viewers hoping to recreate the movie experience, Florida State University in Tallahassee is the clearest individually identified production site from the information released by the filmmakers, although the university facility itself should not automatically be treated as a tourist attraction or a public filming set.

The broader Tallahassee roads and woodland locations are much more representative of the film's exterior world, but the exact stretches used for individual shots have not all been publicly identified.

The same applies to Gainesville's wooded filming areas. The city and its surrounding woodland are established parts of the production, but the available production information does not provide a complete catalogue of every individual road or forest access point.

That distinction matters because a location article can quickly turn into a game of “someone on social media said this was the place”, which is not particularly helpful when the goal is to identify genuine filming locations.

Fans have also reacted differently to the film's deliberately limited sense of place. Some are likely to enjoy recognising the Florida landscape and seeing how familiar roads and woodland are transformed into something far stranger, while others may find themselves more interested in the technical side of the production, particularly the virtual-production work used to make the Jeep's journey appear endless. The fact that such a large portion of the film takes place inside one vehicle has also made the behind-the-scenes process an interesting part of its appeal.

Ultimately, It Ends was filmed in Florida, primarily in Tallahassee and Gainesville, with the most specifically identified production site being the Florida State University virtual production facility on South Copeland Street. The filmmakers combined that controlled studio environment with real roads and wooded locations around both cities, creating the peculiar mixture of realism and unreality required for a story in which four friends can drive for hours without ever reaching the end of the road.

There may be more precise locations worth identifying as additional production information becomes public, but it is better to separate confirmed filming sites from fan theories rather than turn every patch of Florida woodland into an alleged It Ends location.

For now, Tallahassee, Florida State University and Gainesville's wooded areas form the clearest location trail for the 2026 film. Would you actually visit these Florida locations for your own It Ends road-trip experience, or would an allegedly endless highway be enough to make you turn the car around before the first mile?
