Chinese Influencer Athena Liya Missing Case Revisited After New Philippines Investigation
The disappearance of Chinese influencer Athena Liya (雅典娜Liya), whose real name is Kong Limei, has taken a dramatic new turn, with reports now claiming that she was allegedly targeted after travelling to the Philippines in 2023 and may have died soon afterwards. The case has resurfaced alongside an investigation into an international kidnapping network, while a former close friend, Li Yifei, has reportedly been accused of helping lure Athena to Manila. The claims are serious, but they remain allegations while investigators continue to establish exactly what happened.
Born in 1995, Athena had built a following on Chinese social media, where she became known for her appearance as well as a more down-to-earth personality. She also competed in the 2021 Miss World Macau competition and reportedly finished third. Her public career appeared to be moving along normally until June 2023, when a trip to Manila was followed by her sudden disappearance.
For more than three years, Athena’s whereabouts remained unclear. During that time, several explanations circulated online, with one of the most persistent claims suggesting that she had been taken to Cambodia and forced to work at a nightclub.

Athena Liya Disappearance: Close Friend Li Yifei Allegedly Played Key Role in Manila Trip
The story continued to attract attention despite the lack of a clear resolution, leaving her family and followers with more questions than answers. Now, reports connected to a wider investigation have brought a very different version of events back into focus.
At the centre of that account is Li Yifei, whom Athena reportedly met at a brand event in early 2023. According to the claims surrounding the investigation, Li presented herself as coming from a wealthy family and gradually became close to Athena. Their friendship reportedly developed quickly, with the two spending considerable time together and even travelling to London.

The relationship allegedly became important when Li later invited Athena to Manila. Reports claim that in late May 2023, Li told Athena that she was struggling after a breakup and suggested that they travel to the Philippines so she could take some time away from everything. Other accounts have suggested that the trip may also have involved a possible advertising or photography project.
Athena reportedly hesitated because of her work commitments. After Li continued persuading her, however, she eventually agreed. The plan allegedly gave Athena the impression that Li would travel with her, making what happened next particularly difficult to explain.
On 16 June 2023, Athena reportedly flew to Manila alone. According to the allegations, Li cancelled her own journey after Athena had already boarded the flight, saying that an unexpected family matter had prevented her from travelling. Li allegedly arranged for someone else to meet Athena after she arrived.
The latest claims suggest that the cancellation may not have been as innocent as Athena had been led to believe. According to reports surrounding the investigation, Li allegedly passed Athena’s flight information and personal details to a criminal network operating in the Philippines.
If those allegations are eventually established, it would mean the trip was allegedly being used to place Athena directly in the path of people who intended to target her.

After arriving in Manila, Athena was reportedly taken by members of the group and held against her will. Her phone was allegedly confiscated, cutting her off from normal contact with relatives and friends. The people holding her then reportedly contacted her family while pretending to act on Athena’s behalf.
Her family was allegedly told that Athena had accumulated a substantial debt at a casino and that money was needed to resolve the situation. The story reportedly raised doubts among her relatives, but they continued trying to raise the requested amount because they feared for Athena’s safety.
Reports claim that the alleged ransom demand reached US$800,000. Athena’s family was reportedly forced to take drastic financial steps, including selling property in China in an attempt to secure her return. Yet even after the money was allegedly paid, Athena did not come home.
According to the newer claims surrounding the investigation, Athena may have already died by that point and the information given to her family was allegedly part of an attempt to conceal what had happened.

Her remains were reportedly disposed of, while other information about her supposed location was allegedly circulated to send investigators and relatives in the wrong direction.
That allegation could also explain why the Cambodia theory persisted for so long. Reports now suggest that the story about Athena being taken there may have been deliberately introduced as a distraction. Whether that is actually what happened remains to be established, but the possibility has added another layer to a case that has already been surrounded by conflicting stories for years.
The case has now resurfaced in connection with an investigation into an international criminal network allegedly associated with Liu Hanwen. Liu was arrested in the United States and returned to China on 20 July 2026, where he is expected to face criminal proceedings.
The wider investigation reportedly concerns allegations involving Chinese nationals overseas and has involved cooperation between authorities in China, the Philippines, the United States and South Korea.
Another alleged member of the network is Chen Yuxuan, who reportedly also used the name Li Na. She was arrested in South Korea in September 2024, according to the material surrounding the investigation.

Developments involving the wider network have now prompted renewed attention on Athena’s disappearance and the possibility that her case could be connected to the same operation.
That connection, however, still needs to be treated carefully. The investigation into Liu Hanwen and other alleged members of the network does not automatically establish that Athena was one of their victims.
Her case has been linked to the wider investigation through reports and allegations, but the specific circumstances surrounding her disappearance still require confirmation. There is a considerable difference between a lead being investigated and a fact being formally established.

A conversation involving the two women and her close friend has surfaced online and is now circulating widely
Li Yifei remains one of the most closely watched names in the Athena case. Reports allege that she gained Athena’s confidence, encouraged her to travel to Manila and then provided information that could have allowed others to target her. The suggestion that someone Athena considered a close friend may have played such a role has understandably become one of the most disturbing aspects of the story.
After Athena disappeared, Li reportedly deleted her social media accounts and disappeared from public view herself. As of August 2026, reports indicate that she has not been arrested and remains at large.
However, claims that she deliberately arranged Athena’s disappearance remain allegations and should not be presented as an established criminal finding unless supported by official proceedings.

The reaction from people who followed Athena has understandably varied. Some have expressed anger and disbelief over the possibility that a trusted friend could have been involved, while others have urged caution until investigators provide stronger evidence. After three years of rumours, it is hardly surprising that people want a definitive answer, although social media has never exactly been famous for waiting patiently for one.
The most important development now is whether investigators can establish what happened to Athena after she landed in Manila and whether the evidence supports the alleged connection to the wider network. For her family and those who followed her career, the case has already dragged on for years, with one theory replacing another and very little certainty in between.
The latest claims may finally point investigators towards clearer answers, but until those claims are formally confirmed, Athena’s story remains an unresolved case surrounded by serious allegations. What do you make of the latest developments, and do you think the renewed investigation could finally reveal what happened to Athena Liya?
