HBO’s Lanterns wastes very little time making its biggest mystery painfully obvious: Hal Jordan appears to be dead. The first episode begins as a grounded detective story involving Hal and John Stewart, but its final moments jump forward to 2026 and leave John standing over Hal’s frozen body in Rushville, Nebraska. There is just one rather important problem with the apparent death: Hal’s Green Lantern ring is nowhere to be found.
That missing ring immediately makes the situation far stranger than a straightforward farewell to one of DC’s best-known heroes. The series, co-created by Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof and Tom King, has deliberately pulled Hal and John away from the usual cosmic spectacle and placed them in a mystery that feels closer to an old-fashioned crime drama.
Then, just when viewers think they understand the assignment, the show jumps a decade forward and seemingly removes one of its central characters from the story. Subtle, this is not.
The opening episode, titled “Pilot”, spends much of its time in 2016, with veteran Green Lantern Hal Jordan working alongside former soldier John Stewart after a fatal shooting in the area where Hal first encountered the wider world of the Green Lanterns.
Hal's powers are also beginning to diminish, while John is being positioned as his potential successor. Their relationship is hardly smooth, with both men bringing very different attitudes to the job.
Their investigation gradually reveals that Rushville has a much stranger connection to extraterrestrial events than anyone might initially expect. The town has already been linked to Hal’s first encounter with Abin Sur, while the events surrounding the investigation suggest that something much larger is developing beneath the surface.
The final time jump to 2026 therefore feels less like a random shock and more like a warning that whatever started in 2016 eventually catches up with everyone.
So, is Hal Jordan really dead? At this stage, the honest answer is that the series has not given viewers enough information to say for certain. His body is discovered by John, and everything about the scene is designed to make the audience believe Hal has died.
Yet the missing Green Lantern ring creates a huge question mark, particularly because the ring is not simply an accessory in this story. It is closely tied to Hal’s identity and his abilities, making its absence extremely difficult to ignore.
One theory is that Hal may have deliberately separated himself from the ring before his death. That possibility becomes more interesting when considering how his relationship with the Green Lantern role has changed over the years.
Hal Jordan has spent decades carrying the responsibility, and the first episode makes it clear that his enthusiasm for the job is no longer what it once was. If his declining powers and growing exhaustion have left him questioning his future, the events leading to 2026 could represent the point where everything finally became too much.
There is also the possibility that the body John discovers is not the real Hal Jordan at all. The idea may sound like the sort of superhero twist that would normally require several warning signs, but the wider DC Universe has already established that advanced replication technology exists.
Superman has also introduced audiences to the possibility of duplicated beings, while Lanterns has established that Hal’s consciousness has been stored within his ring. The details do not necessarily confirm a clone theory, but they certainly make it harder to dismiss.
If the body is a duplicate, the missing ring could become the most important clue of all. Hal Jordan could have arranged for his apparent death as part of a larger plan, potentially allowing him to disappear while retaining control over whatever comes next.
Whether that would be an elaborate attempt to escape his life as a Green Lantern or something much more calculated remains unclear, but the absence of the ring makes the idea considerably more interesting than a simple body-swap twist.
The condition of Rushville also raises another possibility. Hal’s body is not found in an ordinary setting, and the surrounding area appears to have suffered a catastrophic event, with the town itself looking almost frozen in time.
Given Rushville’s established connection to extraterrestrial activity, it is entirely possible that the events of 2026 are the result of a confrontation that began years earlier. Hal Jordan could have died while trying to stop whatever threat eventually reaches the town, turning his apparent final stand into a mystery that John must solve.
That theory would also explain why the series spends so much time establishing the strange history of Rushville. If the town is merely a backdrop, the location could have been almost anywhere.
Instead, Lanterns has tied it directly to Hal’s origin story and the extraterrestrial mystery at the heart of the season. There is a very good chance that the location itself holds part of the answer, which means John may have more than a dead mentor to investigate when he returns to the case.
Then there is John Stewart, whose own future becomes increasingly intriguing after the time jump. Despite being positioned as Hal’s successor, John still does not appear to possess a Green Lantern ring in 2026. That is an odd detail, particularly when another Lantern, Guy Gardner, has already been established as an active Green Lantern in the wider DC Universe.
There can be multiple Lanterns operating on Earth, so John's lack of a ring does not automatically mean he has failed. It does, however, suggest that his path to becoming a Lantern may be considerably more complicated than expected.
The question could even connect directly to whatever happened between Hal and John after the events of 2016. Perhaps John never received a ring because something went wrong during his training.
Perhaps Hal's disappearance changed the entire succession plan. Or perhaps the absence of John's ring is another clue that the events of 2026 are not unfolding in the straightforward way the episode wants viewers to believe.

Fan reactions to the ending are understandably divided. Some viewers are treating Hal’s apparent death as a bold move that immediately gives Lanterns a mystery worth following, while others are sceptical that the series would introduce such a major character only to remove him at the end of its opening chapter.
The missing ring has also become the obvious detail for fans to dissect, because in a show built around Green Lantern mythology, leaving the ring behind feels about as suspicious as leaving a detective's notebook at a crime scene.
Others are already leaning towards the idea that Hal is still alive in some form, whether through a staged disappearance, a duplicate or the consciousness connected to his ring.
That theory would allow the series to maintain its mystery without permanently losing the character, while also giving John a reason to investigate what really happened. For a story that is supposed to be grounded and detective-driven, Lanterns has certainly given its audience plenty of conspiracy material after only one episode.

Whether Hal Jordan sacrificed himself, disappeared by design, became the victim of something connected to Rushville or is somehow still alive, the mystery is clearly meant to drive the story forward.
