Payback (เพย์แบค เดอะซีรีส์) wrapped up its gritty revenge story with a satisfying conclusion, but that has not stopped fans from wondering whether the hit iQIYI Thai BL thriller could somehow return for another chapter. Although the first season neatly resolves the central conflict between Sun, Jay and Bank, discussions surrounding a potential Season 2 continue to gain momentum as viewers refuse to let the series disappear quietly. When a drama builds this much emotional investment, fans rarely accept "The End" without asking for one more episode... or ten.
Reactions following the finale have been wonderfully divided. Some viewers believe Payback delivered exactly the ending it deserved, closing every major storyline without dragging things out. Others argue the chemistry between Minlee Thanakorn Wichanukhor and Toptap Jarukit Kaewmoonrueang deserves another season entirely focused on their relationship after all the revenge and corporate mind games.
Meanwhile, social media has been filled with fans joking that after surviving murder plots, betrayal and enough emotional trauma to last several lifetimes, Sun and Jay have earned at least one peaceful holiday together. Whether television drama allows that is another matter.
At the time of writing, Payback has not been officially renewed for Season 2. Neither the production team, broadcaster nor iQIYI has announced plans for another instalment. While online discussions continue to generate excitement, there is currently no confirmation that the series will return.
That should not come as a huge surprise. Unlike long-running franchises, Payback was produced as a complete adaptation of the original Korean webtoon and novel by SAMK and illustrator Fujoking.
Across ten episodes, the drama carefully follows Sun's revenge journey, exposes the corruption surrounding Dream Entertainment, brings Bank's downfall to a decisive conclusion and finally allows Sun and Jay to embrace a future together. Most importantly, the finale leaves very few unanswered questions, making it feel like a complete story rather than a season ending designed purely to tease another instalment.
Still, fans continue to search for clues. Rumours circulating online have suggested that members connected to the production have indicated the story may not be entirely finished, although none of those comments have been officially verified.
Other reports from entertainment-focused social media users claim the creative team would consider every possibility if audience demand remained exceptionally strong. Even so, those same discussions also acknowledge that the likelihood currently appears well below fifty per cent, making any continuation far from guaranteed.
The biggest obstacle is simply how Thai BL adaptations are usually produced. Dramas based on completed novels or webtoons generally arrive as self-contained projects rather than ongoing series.
While there have been notable exceptions in recent years, most adaptations finish once the source material's primary storyline has been adapted. That trend places Payback in a challenging position despite its growing popularity.
Ratings also add an interesting layer to the conversation. Although the drama steadily built a loyal audience throughout its run and attracted strong engagement both domestically and internationally, the final viewing figures have yet to be publicly released.
The show's popularity across online discussion platforms has remained impressive, suggesting audience enthusiasm certainly exists. Whether that enthusiasm alone is enough to justify another season is a completely different question, particularly when cast schedules and production budgets inevitably enter the discussion.
If Payback Season 2 somehow receives the green light, the story would almost certainly move away from revenge and towards the next stage of Sun and Jay's complicated relationship.
With Bank defeated and the conspiracy exposed, there would be little reason to revisit the original conflict. Instead, the drama could adapt the official side stories from SAMK's source material, offering fans an entirely different emotional experience.
Rather than chasing revenge, Sun would likely be forced to navigate his unexpected rise within the entertainment industry. After appearing in the film that helped expose Dream Entertainment's corruption, he could find himself becoming an increasingly recognisable celebrity.
That would introduce fresh challenges, including relentless media attention, jealous rivals and the pressure of balancing public fame with private happiness. Considering how uncomfortable Sun was with attention for most of Season 1, watching him suddenly become famous might be almost as terrifying as confronting another criminal conspiracy.
For Jay, another season would finally allow audiences to explore the man hidden beneath the cold executive image. Throughout Season 1 he treated nearly every relationship as a calculated business transaction, only gradually revealing genuine vulnerability through his growing attachment to Sun.
Payback Season 2 could explore those emotional scars in greater depth, showing how someone who built walls around himself slowly learns to trust the one person capable of breaking them down.
Naturally, his protective instincts would probably become even stronger. Fans already joke that Jay's solution to every problem is simply standing between Sun and danger while looking intimidating enough for everyone else to rethink their life choices.
Supporting characters would also have more room to shine. Sky could receive a much larger storyline exploring his struggles within the entertainment industry, while photographer Pakin might play an important role in shaping Sun's growing public image.
Expanding these characters would help broaden the series beyond its central romance while maintaining the glamorous yet ruthless showbusiness setting that became one of the drama's defining strengths.
Even without Bank as the primary antagonist, tension would hardly disappear. New corporate rivals, obsessive fans, ambitious executives or unresolved figures from Sun's past could all emerge to threaten the couple's fragile peace. After all, psychological thrillers rarely reward their characters with a perfectly quiet life. Apparently happiness still comes with several pages of terms and conditions.
As for when a second season could realistically arrive, any prediction remains entirely speculative because no renewal has been announced. If production were somehow approved during the coming months, a traditional Thai drama schedule could place script development in late 2026, filming during the first half of 2027 and post-production shortly afterwards.
Under that scenario, a mid-to-late 2027 premiere would be the earliest realistic release window. Until an official announcement arrives, however, that timeline remains nothing more than an educated estimate rather than confirmed planning.
For now, Payback The Series remains a complete standalone Thai BL thriller with a finished story, and there is no official evidence that another season is currently in development. While the extensive side stories from the original source material certainly provide enough content for a continuation, whether audiences ever see them adapted depends entirely on future decisions from the production team and platform.
