Treasure Island Season 2: Will the MGM+ Pirate Drama Return for Another Adventure?

Treasure Island has not been renewed for Season 2, and a second voyage looks unlikely for now. MGM+'s six-part historical adventure has been designed as a miniseries adapting Robert Louis Stevenson's classic pirate novel, meaning Jim Hawkins' journey has a natural endpoint rather than an obvious invitation to return next year. Still, with a cast led by Tom Sweet, Hayley Atwell and David Oyelowo, there is plenty of material to imagine if the broadcasters ever decide that one treasure hunt simply isn't enough.

The first season follows Jim Hawkins and his mother, Bess, after they acquire a mysterious map connected to Captain Flint's legendary buried fortune. Their journey aboard the Hispaniola takes them across the Atlantic towards Skeleton Island, where greed, shifting loyalties and Long John Silver's dangerous ambitions turn the expedition into something considerably less relaxing than a family holiday.

With Season 1 now complete, the big question is whether the story has genuinely reached its end or whether MGM+ and Paramount+ could be tempted to send the crew back into troubled waters.

Will Treasure Island be renewed for Season 2?

At the time of writing, neither MGM+ nor Paramount+ has announced a second season of Treasure Island. There is also no confirmed production schedule, release date or returning cast list for a follow-up. For now, viewers should treat Season 2 as speculation rather than an upcoming project.

The biggest obstacle is the show's format. Unlike an ongoing adventure series built around multiple seasons, this six-episode production adapts a well-established literary story with a defined beginning and ending. Miniseries are generally designed to tell a complete narrative in a limited number of episodes, so a successful first run does not automatically translate into another commission.

That does not make a sequel impossible. Television adaptations can expand beyond their source material, particularly when broadcasters believe the characters and setting have enough appeal to sustain another chapter. However, there has been no official indication that the creative team intends to continue the story.

What could happen in Treasure Island Season 2?

If a second season ever gets the green light, it would probably need to move beyond Stevenson's original novel and develop a new story. The first season establishes the hunt for Flint's fortune as the driving force behind Jim's transformation, so a sequel would need a fresh reason to send him back into danger. Another map appearing conveniently in a dusty chest might do the trick, although even pirates deserve a break from suspicious pieces of paper.

One possible direction would follow Jim Hawkins after his return to England. Having experienced mutiny, betrayal and the brutal realities of life at sea, the young adventurer would no longer be the sheltered teenager who first encountered the treasure map. A sequel could explore how his experiences change his relationships, his ambitions and his understanding of wealth.

The fortune itself could also become a source of conflict. Returning home with riches might sound like the perfect ending, but sudden wealth can create problems of its own. A second season could examine whether Jim finds security in his new circumstances or discovers that surviving an island full of pirates was the easy part.

Bess Hawkins would have an equally interesting role in that story. Hayley Atwell's character brings intelligence and determination to the adventure, and a continuation could explore how she adjusts to life after the voyage. Rather than simply becoming the worried mother waiting on the shore, Bess could remain an active force in whatever trouble finds her family next.

Could Long John Silver return in Season 2?

David Oyelowo's Long John Silver would be one of the most compelling reasons to revisit Treasure Island. Charismatic, calculating and difficult to pin down, Silver is the sort of character who can make an escape feel like the beginning of another problem rather than a proper conclusion.

A hypothetical sequel could follow Silver after his departure from the original adventure, exploring how he uses his freedom and whether his appetite for fortune eventually draws him into another dangerous scheme. His complicated relationship with Jim could also provide the emotional centre of a new season, particularly if their paths cross again.

However, Silver's return would depend on the direction of the writing and the events established in the completed series. There is currently no confirmation that Oyelowo would reprise the role, and the same applies to the rest of the cast. For now, imagining another encounter between Jim and Silver is an entertaining possibility, not evidence that another season is in development.

Who could return for Treasure Island Season 2?

If MGM+ and Paramount+ commissioned a sequel, Tom Sweet would be a natural candidate to return as Jim Hawkins, with Hayley Atwell potentially reprising her role as Bess. David Oyelowo could also return as Long John Silver if the new storyline called for his character.

Other familiar faces could reappear depending on how the sequel handled the surviving characters and the timeline. Jack Huston's Aaron Graham, Tomer Capone's Billy Bones and Tristan Sturrock's Captain Smollett are among the characters associated with the first season, although their involvement would depend on the narrative rather than a confirmed casting decision.

A new season could also introduce fresh characters, including rival treasure hunters, former associates of Captain Flint or people interested in the fortune's whereabouts. Expanding the ensemble would allow the series to explore a wider pirate world without relying entirely on the original novel's familiar faces.

Naturally, all of this remains hypothetical. No cast member has been officially confirmed for a second season, and it would be premature to suggest that negotiations or filming plans are under way.

When could Treasure Island Season 2 be released?

There is no confirmed release date for Treasure Island Season 2 because the series has not been renewed. Any date currently being suggested for a potential follow-up should therefore be treated as an estimate, not an announcement.

If the broadcasters unexpectedly commissioned another season, the production would need time to develop a new script, organise the cast and crew, and undertake filming and post-production. A return in 2027 would depend on a rapid decision and an unusually quick production process; a later release would be more realistic if development began after the first season's completion.

For the moment, there is no reliable basis for predicting whether a sequel would arrive in 2028, 2029 or at all. The most useful indicator will be an official announcement from MGM+, Paramount+ or the production team, rather than a speculative countdown that makes the next voyage look more certain than it is.

Why a second season is possible, but far from guaranteed

There is an obvious creative opportunity in continuing Jim's story, but the decision would ultimately depend on whether the broadcasters believe another season is worth producing. Audience figures, viewing performance, production costs, cast availability and the creative team's interest would all be relevant considerations. Popularity alone would not guarantee a renewal.

The series also has a practical advantage if it remains a standalone production: it can preserve the impact of its central adventure without stretching the story simply because audiences enjoyed it. Not every successful drama needs to return, and sometimes a complete ending is more satisfying than another round of increasingly improbable escapes.

On the other hand, literary adaptations are not obliged to stop where the original book ends. A carefully developed continuation could explore the consequences of Jim's transformation and give Silver another opportunity to charm his way into trouble. The challenge would be creating a story that feels necessary rather than a commercial excuse to reopen a treasure chest that has already been emptied.

Our opinion: Treasure Island deserves a sequel only if the story has somewhere to go

A second season would be welcome if it gave Jim Hawkins a genuinely different challenge, rather than simply sending him back to sea because the first adventure performed well. His transformation from sheltered teenager to resourceful survivor offers a strong foundation for a story about growing up, living with difficult choices and discovering that money cannot necessarily buy peace of mind.

Silver is arguably the bigger attraction. Oyelowo brings the character the kind of charm that makes you understand why people trust him even when every sensible instinct suggests they should keep their distance. Watching him navigate life after the treasure hunt could make for an excellent continuation, especially if Jim has become less naive and more capable of seeing through his old adversary's tricks.

Still, there is a risk in extending a story that already has a clear literary destination. A sequel that undermines the first season's ending or turns every character into a permanent pirate would feel less like an ambitious new chapter and more like a desperate search for another map.

Personally, I would rather wait for a strong script than see a rushed renewal. A few more episodes of Jim and Silver testing each other's patience could be great television, but the series needs a convincing reason to bring them together again. Treasure Island has plenty of adventure in its DNA; the real question is whether the writers can find a new one that is worth the voyage.

For now, Treasure Island Season 2 remains unconfirmed, and viewers should not expect an official release date or casting announcement until the broadcasters say otherwise. Would you like to see Jim Hawkins return for another adventure, or did the first season tell the story it needed to tell? And if a sequel happens, should it focus on Jim's life back in England or follow Long John Silver's next scheme? Share your thoughts and tell us which character deserves another voyage.
