Overdo (这一秒过火) is still airing on Tencent Video, yet viewers are already looking beyond its current run and asking the inevitable question: will there be Overdo Season 2? It is not difficult to understand why. The Republican-era romance has steadily built momentum thanks to its emotionally charged storytelling, striking performances from Zhang Linghe and Wang Churan, and enough family intrigue to keep audiences guessing every week. While nothing has been officially confirmed, conversations about a possible continuation have already become part of the show's growing popularity.
At the moment, Overdo has not been renewed for Season 2 by either its production team or streaming platforms. That remains the official position. Although speculation continues across fan communities, there has been no announcement confirming another instalment.
Considering the drama only premiered on 19 July 2026 and is still in the middle of broadcasting its original 36-episode run, that is hardly surprising. Chinese productions rarely announce follow-up seasons while a series is still airing unless a continuation has been planned from the very beginning.
Even so, the conversation refuses to slow down. Reports circulating among drama communities suggest members of the wider production circle have hinted that the story still has room to expand, while one respected C-drama commentator on Weibo responded to a fan asking about Overdo Season 2 with a simple, "Let's wait and see."
That is far from confirmation, of course, but it has been enough to keep speculation alive. As always, rumours should be treated with caution until an official statement arrives. Sometimes "wait and see" really does just mean... wait and see.
The biggest obstacle is not popularity but tradition. Unlike many Western television series, most Chinese dramas are designed as complete, self-contained adaptations of their original novels. Once the source material has been fully adapted, productions usually move on to entirely new projects.
While the industry has become slightly more open to multi-season storytelling in recent years, second seasons remain the exception rather than the rule. Success alone does not automatically guarantee another chapter.
That said, Overdo appears to have several factors working in its favour. The series has attracted strong online discussion, generated healthy engagement across social platforms and continued climbing audience popularity rankings during its broadcast.
If viewer enthusiasm remains high throughout its run and streaming performance continues to impress, executives may at least explore the possibility of expanding the story. Television executives do enjoy numbers almost as much as audiences enjoy dramatic staring contests.
If Overdo Season 2 were eventually approved, the story would likely move far beyond the deeply personal conflicts that currently define the drama.
Rather than focusing primarily on misunderstandings, family rivalries and complicated romance, the narrative could shift towards the growing national crisis hinted at within the historical timeline. That would naturally expand the scale of the series without abandoning its emotional core.
A second season could see Murong Qingyi, played by Zhang Linghe, evolve from an emotionally scarred young man into a seasoned military commander forced to make impossible choices.
His journey would become less about revenge and heartbreak, and more about protecting those around him while navigating a nation sliding further into conflict. Personal pain would still matter, but responsibility would begin outweighing resentment.
Meanwhile, Ren Susu, portrayed by Wang Churan, could take on an even more active role within the political landscape. Rather than simply surviving family conspiracies, she may become involved in underground intelligence work, using her intelligence and resilience to help resistance networks operating behind enemy lines.
The emotional chemistry between the two leads would remain central, but their relationship could mature into one built on trust instead of constant emotional tug-of-war. Fans might finally receive a couple that spends more time working together than misunderstanding each other, although this is still a melodrama, so perhaps nobody should celebrate too early.
A continuation would also naturally introduce fresh faces. New military commanders, political rivals, resistance organisers and undercover agents could replace many of the family-centred antagonists dominating the current storyline.
Expanding the world beyond the Murong household would give the series room to explore broader historical events while maintaining the suspense that has helped define Overdo from the beginning.
The original cast would almost certainly remain the first choice should another season happen. Zhang Linghe, Wang Churan and Fu Xinbo would likely return if scheduling allowed. However, there is another interesting possibility.
Following updated NRTA billing regulations, future Chinese dramas increasingly arrange cast credits according to surname stroke order rather than popularity or negotiated billing positions.
If Overdo Season 2 ever enters production, viewers may notice a different cast order compared with the first season. It would not reflect changing importance within the story, only a new industry-wide approach to credit placement.
One major creative challenge would involve the source material itself. Overdo adapts Fei Wo Si Cun's novel If I Hadn't Met You That Second, which tells a complete story and does not feature a standalone sequel.
Interestingly, the novel already exists within the author's wider literary universe, serving as a continuation connected to Too Late to Say I Love You. Because the original narrative reaches its intended conclusion, any television sequel would almost certainly require an entirely original screenplay rather than another direct adaptation.
That reality also explains why a second season would take time. Writers would need to develop a brand-new storyline before cameras could even begin rolling.
Add several months of filming, extensive post-production and the standard approval process required for historical Chinese dramas, and the earliest realistic release window would likely fall sometime in 2028, assuming renewal happened within the next year. For now, that remains speculation rather than a production schedule.
Fan reactions have been as dramatic as the series itself. Some viewers believe Overdo has created a world rich enough to support another season, arguing that the political backdrop and historical setting deserve deeper exploration.
Others remain more cautious, pointing out that the original novel already tells a complete story and worrying that extending it could dilute what made the adaptation so compelling in the first place.
Then there are those determined to campaign for more episodes regardless of the odds, insisting that the chemistry between Zhang Linghe and Wang Churan is simply too good to leave behind after one season. The optimism is admirable, even if renewal announcements cannot be summoned through sheer determination... unfortunately.
For now, the answer remains straightforward. Overdo has not been renewed for Season 2, and no official plans have been announced by Tencent Video or the iQIYI production team. However, the show's growing popularity, strong audience discussion and lingering curiosity about where these characters could go next ensure the conversation is far from over.
