Tencent Video's OVERDO is winning over viewers with more than its emotional story and striking performances from Zhang Linghe and Wang Churan. Every episode is packed with breathtaking streets, grand mansions and beautiful natural scenery that have left fans asking the same question: where exactly was this drama filmed? While production deliberately kept some filming details private during shooting to avoid large crowds disrupting the cast and crew, several key locations have since become known and are well worth adding to any travel wishlist.
Filming for OVERDO officially took place between 25 June and 28 September 2025, with much of the production centred in Hengdian, China's legendary filmmaking capital. Set against Republican-era Shanghai, the drama follows Murong Qing Yi (Zhang Linghe), the youngest son of a powerful warlord whose troubled childhood changes forever after he is rescued by Ren Su Su (Wang Churan).
Years later, love quietly blossoms between them, only to be tested by sacrifice, heartbreak and painful misunderstandings. Thankfully, the filming schedule was less dramatic than the storyline.

• Hengdian World Studios, Zhejiang Province

The heart of OVERDO was undoubtedly Hengdian World Studios, often nicknamed "Chinawood". Opened in 1996 in Dongyang, Zhejiang Province, it has grown into the largest film studio complex in the world and remains the first choice for countless historical and period productions.
Most of OVERDO's indoor and large-scale outdoor scenes were filmed here, including elegant mansions, bustling streets and lavish aristocratic residences that recreate Republican China with remarkable detail.
The studio offers enormous permanent sets, advanced production facilities and complete infrastructure, allowing directors to move efficiently between locations without leaving the complex. Every beautiful frame audiences enjoy is supported by hundreds of crew members working from sunrise until long after dark.
Costume designers, lighting technicians, camera operators and set builders all play their part in creating the illusion that viewers have travelled back in time. It looks effortless on screen, although someone behind the camera is probably sprinting with cables.
• Tang & Song Palatial District, Hengdian World Studios

One of the most eye-catching sections of Hengdian used during filming was the spectacular Tang & Song Palatial District. Featuring magnificent courtyards, noble residences, landscaped gardens and traditional marketplaces, this enormous area provided the perfect backdrop for many of the drama's emotional encounters and family confrontations.
Several scenes involving wealthy households, political tension and elegant gatherings were filmed among these beautifully preserved architectural sets.
Every corridor, courtyard and wooden pavilion adds another layer of authenticity, making it easy to forget these streets were purpose-built for film productions rather than surviving centuries of history.
• Qin Palace Scenic Area, Hengdian World Studios
Another impressive section utilised during production was the Qin Palace Scenic Area, famous for its enormous palace complexes, towering gates and monumental courtyards.
Although originally constructed for historical epics, its grand architecture proved equally effective for several of OVERDO's large ceremonial scenes and sequences involving influential families. The scale alone makes almost everyone walking through it look important, even if they're simply heading for lunch.

• Lengquan
Some quieter and more intimate scenes were filmed in Lengquan, a picturesque destination celebrated for its peaceful natural surroundings.
Lush greenery, gentle streams and traditional scenery create a softer atmosphere that contrasts beautifully with the political intrigue and emotional turmoil elsewhere in the series.
The tranquil environment helps highlight the growing relationship between the main characters while giving audiences a chance to appreciate China's natural landscapes beyond the elaborate studio sets. Sometimes silence speaks louder than dramatic background music.
• Xiangshan Film and Television Town, Zhejiang Province
Several sequences also took place at Xiangshan Film and Television Town, another famous production base known for its impressive ancient city streets and traditional architecture. The location has long been favoured for historical dramas because of its authentic city walls, palace compounds and expansive open spaces.
One standout feature is its remarkable cityscape stretching around 400 metres in length, complete with towering gates that immediately transport visitors into another era.
The detailed architecture makes it ideal for scenes involving official residences, crowded marketplaces and dramatic confrontations.

• Xiangyang City Set, Xiangshan Film and Television Town
Production also utilised the beautifully designed Xiangyang City Set, where wide stone streets, fortified entrances and traditional commercial districts helped recreate the atmosphere of a thriving Republican-era settlement.
Walking through the set almost feels like stepping onto another television production, which, to be fair, is probably exactly what's happening most days.
• Yunnan Province
Some of the series' most breathtaking outdoor scenes were filmed across Yunnan Province, famous for its spectacular mountains, winding rivers and untouched forests.
The province's dramatic scenery adds emotional weight to several important moments and offers a refreshing contrast to the carefully constructed urban environments.
The region has long attracted filmmakers thanks to its diverse geography, allowing productions to capture sweeping cinematic landscapes without relying heavily on visual effects. Nature occasionally does better production design than humans ever could.

• Sichuan Province
Production also travelled to Sichuan Province, where majestic mountain scenery, dense woodland and flowing rivers helped shape several memorable outdoor sequences. The province's rugged landscapes perfectly complement the emotional journey of the characters while adding a sense of scale that studio sets simply cannot replicate.
The changing seasons and dramatic terrain have made Sichuan one of China's favourite filming destinations, offering directors endless visual possibilities for romantic, adventurous and emotionally charged scenes.
C-Drama fans and cnetz have responded enthusiastically to the drama's filming locations, with many praising the production for blending elaborate studio craftsmanship with China's stunning natural scenery.
Social media has been filled with viewers trying to identify iconic streets, gardens and mountains featured throughout the series, while others have already begun planning future trips to Hengdian World Studios and the other destinations. Some even joked that visiting these places might increase their chances of finding their own Murong Qing Yi, although there is unfortunately no official guarantee included with the entrance ticket.
As more production details continue to emerge, additional filming locations may become public in the future, giving fans even more places to explore.
