Fans of Archives: The Nanyang Mystery (南部档案) finally have a reason to look beyond the heartbreak of season one. Just as viewers were still recovering from some of the drama's most emotional twists, creator and original novelist Nan Pai San Shu, also known as Kennedy Xu Lei, has revealed that plans for a second season are already being discussed. While nothing has been officially approved, the update has sparked fresh excitement among audiences eager to return to the mysterious and dangerous world of the South Seas archives.

Speaking about the future of the series, Nan Pai San Shu revealed that he hopes to move into the creation phase of a second season as quickly as possible. According to the author, iQIYI has already reached out to discuss the possibility of continuing the story.

He even joked that the emotional scenes no longer require extra publicity, encouraging fans to share more of the drama's humorous moments instead. That might be easier said than done considering viewers spent much of the first season collectively wondering why happiness seemed to be forbidden for certain characters.

Adapted from the author's novel and set within the wider Daomu Biji universe, Archives: The Nanyang Mystery quickly established itself as one of 2026's most talked-about Chinese dramas.

Set in the humid and unsettling atmosphere of Republican-era Nanyang, the series follows investigators Zhang Hailou, played by Zhang Xincheng, and Zhang Haixia, portrayed by Ding Yuxi, as they uncover bizarre murders linked to mysterious deities, hidden conspiracies and long-buried family secrets.

The show's greatest strength has arguably been its central trio. Zhang Hailou, Zhang Haixia and Zhang Haiqi, played by Jiang Peiyao, formed a dynamic team whose contrasting personalities gave the story much of its emotional weight.

Hailou's fearless and impulsive nature often clashed with Haixia's calm intelligence, while Haiqi served as the commanding force holding everything together. Their chemistry became one of the biggest talking points among viewers and remains a major reason fans are demanding a second season.

Much of the discussion surrounding a potential sequel centres on Zhang Haixia, whose journey became one of the most tragic character arcs in recent Chinese television.

Initially introduced as the brilliant investigator capable of tracking clues through scent alone, Haixia suffered devastating injuries, lost his mobility and eventually experienced an emotional and psychological transformation that gave audiences the unforgettable contrast between the gentle "White Shrimp" and the colder, more ruthless "Black Shrimp."

If the writers were aiming to break hearts, viewers agree they completed the assignment with alarming efficiency. The biggest shock arrived in episode eight when Zhang Haixia appeared to sacrifice himself while protecting Zhang Hailou

Although later developments complicated his fate, the emotional impact remained enormous. Social media platforms quickly filled with reactions from fans who were not prepared to see one of the drama's most beloved characters suffer so much so early in the story.

Many viewers are now hoping a second season could finally give him the peace and closure they believe he deserves. Story-wise, a second season has plenty of material to explore.

Season one only scratched the surface of the secrets hidden within the mysterious Southern Archives, the Zhang family's ancient legacy and the deeper mysteries connecting the wider Daomu Biji mythology.

Questions surrounding the Zhang clan, the origins of various supernatural phenomena and the unresolved consequences of the first season's events remain largely unanswered. In other words, the writers left enough breadcrumbs to keep fan theories running for months.

If a second season moves forward, industry observers expect Zhang Xincheng, Ding Yuxi and Jiang Peiyao to be the names viewers will most want to see return.

While no casting announcements have been made, bringing back the original trio would likely be a major priority given how strongly audiences connected with their characters.

The return of Fu Dalong's formidable antagonist Mo Yungao in some form is also a possibility, especially considering how deeply his actions shaped the story's central conflicts.

As for a release date, predictions remain speculative. Since the second season has only been discussed at a planning stage, production would likely need to move through scripting, development and scheduling before cameras begin rolling.

If development progresses smoothly and receives formal approval in the coming months, a premiere sometime in late 2027 or early 2028 appears to be a realistic possibility. Fans may not love the wait, but after surviving season one's emotional rollercoaster, patience has practically become part of the viewing experience.

Reaction online has been divided between excitement and cautious optimism. Many fans celebrated the creator's comments as the strongest indication yet that the story is not over.

Others remain hesitant until an official announcement arrives, having learned the hard way that hope can be dangerous when your favourite character's survival is involved. Meanwhile, countless viewers continue campaigning for a kinder ending for Zhang Haixia, a request that has become something of a movement in its own right.

For now, Archives: The Nanyang Mystery Season 2 remains an exciting possibility rather than a confirmed reality. Yet with growing audience demand, ongoing discussions and a rich mythology still waiting to be explored, the chances of returning to Nanyang appear stronger than ever.

The bigger question is whether the writers will finally reward fans with some happiness or once again choose emotional devastation as their preferred storytelling tool. What do you think should happen in season two, and which character deserves the biggest comeback?
