Leo Wu (Wu Lei) is reportedly heading straight from swords and historical robes into luxury cars, unresolved feelings and emotionally confused rich-man energy. Fresh off the attention surrounding costume drama Sword of Coming, the Chinese actor is now said to be taking the male lead role in upcoming modern romance drama No More Beauty in Jingluo, where he will reportedly star opposite Zhou Ye. The internet reaction arrived almost immediately, because apparently C-drama fans never sleep when attractive casting news appears.

The drama, adapted from novelist Qiao Weian’s work of the same name, centres on former lovers Zhao Pingjin and Huang Xitang, who separate in their youth before unexpectedly reuniting five years later.

By then, Zhao Pingjin has become successful in the smart vehicle industry, while Huang Xitang is still struggling through the entertainment business. Naturally, because this is a modern romance drama, emotional baggage arrives fully packaged alongside unresolved chemistry and expensive coats.

According to industry reports, the production originally hoped to reunite Cheng Lei and Wang Churan following their chemistry in How Dare You!?

However, plans reportedly changed after Wang Churan declined the role, believing the female lead’s character direction did not align with the image her team currently wants to build for her career.

That decision apparently forced the production team back into casting mode very quickly. And in today’s drama market, when investors start looking nervous, producers tend to suddenly remember that Leo Wu exists.

Reports claim his commercial pull and proven popularity made him the preferred replacement choice for the male lead role, especially as the production searched for a bigger mainstream draw.

To be fair, the casting logic is not exactly difficult to understand. Leo Wu’s modern romance track record has been unusually reliable in an industry where audiences can turn against a pairing faster than a buffering streaming app.

His breakout popularity with Zhao Lusi in Love Like the Galaxy pushed him into top-tier leading man territory, while his mature chemistry with Zhou Yutong in Nothing But You earned praise for feeling more grounded than typical sweet-drama storytelling.

Then came Amidst a Snowstorm of Love opposite Zhao Jinmai, which viewers practically treated like a national romance emergency for several months.

Leo Wu and Zhou Ye’s New Drama Pairing Sparks Huge Buzz Ahead of ‘No More Beauty in Jingluo’

The drama became known for its polished atmosphere and emotionally soft storytelling, with many fans still ranking it among the strongest modern romance productions in recent years.

So yes, expectations for another Leo Wu romance drama are now absurdly high. The man cannot simply look at someone on screen anymore without audiences starting wedding edits online.

What makes No More Beauty in Jingluo even more interesting is that it marks the first collaboration between Leo Wu and Zhou Ye.

While both actors have built strong followings individually, they have never shared a project before, which has only added to public curiosity. Early reactions online have focused heavily on their visuals together, with many netizens calling the pairing “top-tier” and joking that the production team may have spent more time calculating face-card compatibility than actual scheduling logistics.

Zhou Ye’s involvement has also drawn attention because of her growing reputation as one of the more versatile younger actresses in Chinese dramas.

Following projects such as Legend of the Female General, she has steadily moved between costume dramas, emotional youth stories and more layered character roles. Fans believe Huang Xitang’s complicated emotional arc could allow her to balance vulnerability with ambition, especially as the character navigates both personal heartbreak and career instability.

The female lead’s backstory has become another major talking point online. Huang Xitang was originally described as a rising celebrity whose life changes after an accident affects her appearance, leading her to cut ties with the male lead.

Some viewers praised the storyline for potentially exploring insecurity, fame and emotional isolation in a more mature way, while others questioned whether the drama industry still relies too heavily on tragic misunderstandings to separate couples for five business years before magically reuniting them in dramatic rain scenes.

Meanwhile, Leo Wu Lei taking on a more dominant businessman-style character has sparked curiosity because it would be a noticeable shift from some of his previous modern drama roles. Fans pointed out that while he has played emotionally intelligent and charming leads before, he has never fully stepped into the polished “cold-but-secretly-devoted” executive archetype that modern C-dramas continue recycling like a family heirloom.

Supporters are already calling the pairing one of the strongest visual combinations among younger actors right now, with some saying the two “look expensive together” — which, strangely enough, has become one of the highest compliments in online drama culture.

The buzz surrounding the reported casting has undeniably pushed No More Beauty in Jingluo into early must-watch territory before filming details have even properly settled. So, are fans fully seated for Leo Wu and Zhou Ye together, or is the pressure already dangerously high before cameras have even properly rolled?
