Chinese actor Deng Wei has moved to protect his image rights after a wave of AI-generated short dramas surfaced online using his likeness without consent, prompting a formal legal response from his management on 6 April.

The statement, issued via official channels, made clear that Deng Wei has no connection to any of the circulating AI drama content.

His team stressed he neither participated in production nor authorised any third party to use his face in AI-based creations, directly countering growing speculation among viewers who had assumed his involvement.

According to the management, the videos in question were produced using AI, digitally manipulating Deng Wei’s appearance to fabricate performances that appear convincingly real.

The agency argued that such use crosses clear legal boundaries, citing violations of portrait rights and reputational harm, with the potential to mislead audiences and distort the actor’s public image.

The studio further pointed to gaps in platform oversight, noting that the rapid spread of these videos reflects a broader failure to properly vet manipulated content before distribution.

While the clips gained traction across multiple online spaces, the lack of early intervention has now escalated the situation into a legal dispute.

In response, Deng Wei’s team has appointed legal representatives to gather evidence and pursue formal action against those responsible for both the creation and dissemination of the content.

The statement underlined that all parties involved could face legal consequences, while also urging platforms and users to immediately remove the infringing material and halt further circulation.

Some fans have rallied behind Deng Wei, calling the incident a clear case of digital misuse and demanding stricter safeguards against AI misuse content.

Others, however, admitted they were initially convinced by the realism of the clips, highlighting how easily audiences can be misled when AI-generated media blurs the line between fiction and authenticity.

There is also growing concern among netizens about the wider implications for the entertainment industry.

Discussions have centred on whether current regulations are equipped to handle the speed and sophistication of AI content, with many calling for clearer accountability from both creators and hosting platforms.

The dispute now places Deng Wei at the centre of a broader conversation about digital identity and consent. With evidence collection underway and potential claims looming, the case could set a precedent for how similar incidents are handled moving forward.
