Chinese short-drama actress Yue Yuting found herself at the centre of an online storm after her appearance at Paris Fashion Week triggered questions about whether she had genuinely been invited. The 24-year-old performer, widely recognised within China’s booming short-form drama scene, had been promoted as the first micro-drama actress to attend the event — a claim that quickly drew scrutiny once details of her schedule began circulating online.

The controversy began after Yue Yuting announced she would attend the Balmain runway presentation during Paris Fashion Week. However, she ultimately did not appear at the show. Her fan club later said the change was due to “unforeseen circumstances”, but the absence quickly set off speculation across Chinese social media.

Some users began questioning whether the invitation had ever existed in the first place, particularly as the brand made no public mention of her attendance.

The debate intensified when several fashion watchers noted that the official guest lists and brand coverage did not reference Yue Yuting.

Within hours, discussion threads across Weibo and other platforms framed the situation as a possible case of “蹭秀” — a slang phrase used online to describe someone allegedly trying to gain visibility by associating themselves with a major event.

Days later, Yue Yuting appeared at the Givenchy Fall/Winter 2026 runway show in Paris, wearing a sleek black mini dress. Fans at the venue recognised her and she was seen greeting them while entering the show space.

Shortly afterwards, Yue Yuting shared photos on social media holding what appeared to be an invitation card from the brand, with her name printed clearly on it — a move many interpreted as a direct response to the speculation.

The post also included a photo of Yue Yuting alongside Anna Wintour, the influential fashion editor long associated with the global fashion scene.

Yue Yuting said during her livestream that meeting Wintour in person was an exciting moment, noting she had previously only seen the editor on television.

Addressing the controversy head-on during the same livestream, Yue Yuting spoke bluntly about the accusations circulating online.

“If I didn’t do anything wrong, why should I be afraid?” she told viewers. “If I had done something wrong, I’d be trembling at home. But I didn’t.”

Some critics had claimed that invitations to fashion shows could be purchased through unofficial channels.

Yue Yuting dismissed that suggestion, saying she was not wealthy and had built her career from smaller roles in the micro-drama industry.

“I wouldn’t have had to work my way up through short dramas if I were rich,” she said.

Unlike many rising actors in China’s entertainment industry, Yue currently operates without a major talent agency.

Her rise has largely been powered by the explosive popularity of micro-dramas — short episodic productions designed for mobile viewing that have rapidly built huge audiences across Chinese streaming platforms.

Within that space, Yue Yuting has become one of the most recognisable faces, earning the nickname “short-drama goddess” after starring in a string of viral series.

Online reaction to the Paris Fashion Week episode has been mixed. Supporters argue that Yue’s presence alone reflects how quickly the micro-drama industry is expanding into mainstream entertainment and fashion spaces. Critics, however, remain sceptical and say the situation highlights the blurry boundaries between influencer marketing and traditional celebrity invitations at global fashion events.

Others simply viewed the debate as another example of how social media can amplify speculation before the full story is clear.

For Yue Yuting, the attention has not slowed her down. She continued attending events in Paris and posting updates from the city, appearing determined to move forward despite the chatter.

What do you think about the debate surrounding Yue Yuting and her Paris Fashion Week appearance? Was the criticism fair, or did the situation grow bigger than it needed to be?
